MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay~, the c/o 2012 thread is steadily growing (mainly due to the fabulous work by our wise upperclassmen)! You guys are awesome. 😍

(sweet, I'm the "1000th" reply~!)

i don't know if upper class men are still reading this thread, but i was hoping to get their advice on the best way to find a roommate.

The school will soon send out a form for you to fill out to be included on a list of people looking for roommates. If you come into town to look for an apartment, you will be able to see the book of forms and find out how people answered all the questions; otherwise, all you get is a list of names and e-mail addresses. You can also post a flyer on a bulletin board at school if you come into town so that you can pick up someone who is not a med student but works on campus if you want.

Also, tell your friends that *I* am looking for a roommate for next year.

Its not that I don't want to post, I can just never think of anything cool to say

Don't let that stop you! Gimlet almost NEVER says anything cool. We've come to expect that from him.

Alright, I have a question for some of you who have been around Milwaukee for a bit... how are the libraries? Not like the med libraries, but like the plain old, gotta get my book fix, need a big selection to peruse, and a coffee shop to frequent libraries? Is there a good one close to school? Thanks!

The Wauwatosa Public Library is pretty good, and close to where a lot of people rent apartments in Tosa (corner of 76th and North Ave.) I've studied there a few times, and was always able to find a quiet spot to sit. I don't think they have a coffee shop in the library, but there's a Starbucks on the way there from school. The nice thing about the Milwaukee County library system is that you can get books delivered from any of the other libraries if the one you frequent doesn't have something you're looking for.

West Allis Public is a bit to the south and is about as good a collection. Also no coffee shop. I think the Central branch downtown (in a beautifully restored building with a couple of more modern annexes) may possibly have a coffee shop. UWM library on the East side of town has a coffee shop, but you can't carry materials there without checking them out because the coffee shop is in a different wing. Parking is challenging there anyway. You can carry coffee *into* UWM library, just like the MCW, with a hard, covered cup (not the cardboard kind they give you at the coffee shop).

I'm trying to post ... but I think I'm posting a lot of non-sense in to this thread. 😱 Only if I could be a little bit more clever/witty/intelligent. O well. Can't fix that now.

New question: When would I actually need to purchase a PDA? I don't think it'll be useful during the Basic Science years, but what do I know? I see some med students with them during their clinical years, but are they necessary in med school? 😕

They "give" you one right before M3 year. Not necessary during M1 and M2 unless you really like to use them. I used one a lot in college, and managed to get by without one for 2 years.

Allow me to interject once again to say I hate the freaking PDA they gave us. If it weren't for the required iForms I would have smashed it with a hammer or sold it to gypsies.

I believe the politically correct term is either Romani's or gypo's

The only gypsy family that I personally know is a drug-seeking family. I think their family members only want vicodin/percocet/loratab prescriptions to sell on the streets.

So, from the posts above, I guess I shouldn't waste my money getting a PDA now. Thank guys. 😀

BTW, can anyone recommend a nice cell phone? I hate my blackberry pearl. 😡

I prefer "pikeys" actually....

beware some swearing below!

What kind of international opportunities are available to students? I've heard rumors that you had to find a program on your own and do it yourself, but how do you exactly do that? 😕

There are a Philippines and a Nicaragua rotation hosted by the school. Otherwise, you can look stuff up online to find things. Not a rumor about setting up your own.

One of my friends found a zimbabwe program last year, so he went there for a month. I plan on going to London and working at a hospital where a friend is training, and he's going to help set up the elective. They give you the necessary paperwork during M3 year.

I don't know if it's like this every year, but it the Nicaragua one was semiretarded our year in that it was only offered in January at the peak of interview season. The Philippines one was more reasonable, 2 months I think September and April.

Have any of you done these programs? Studying abroad was probably the best thing I did in undergrad, and I always said I wanted to go somewhere in med school, but are they worth doing? Is your time better spent somewhere here? Yup, clearly I'm very bored at work and getting WAY ahead of myself...

Yeah, I talked to Dr. Hackbarth, and he was opening it up for M3s to go on it. he wanted me to go in Nov when I had my ortho rotation. Apparently January was the best time for the attendings to go... I thought it was stupid to have it then, or I would've considered it.

I haven't done the ones through school, but I'm planning my own with a friend from London that I met when I lived there studying abroad. M4 year is basically a waste of time until you start residency. It's the easy year where you do what you have to do and take electives you want that you may never get a chance to take again. (Which is why I want to do derm at home -- I can see lepers.)

So I know everyone says to relax and not do anything before you start med school, but I've been out of school for a year now, and even though I have two jobs, I'm obviously bored out of my mind. Any suggestions on things that would make adjusting to med school easier? I didn't take genetics in undergrad and I'm seriously considering flipping through a friends text book since I see that it's one of the first courses we take. This is pretty out of character for me, but a year and a half is a long time to read novels and play. Thoughts?

Having a job (or two) is probably all you need. Maybe also start training for the marathon you'll want to run sometime in med school.

lol, I thought about biking across the country with habitat for humanity. Do I get points for considering it?

hah, yeah. Bring your bike too. There are a ton of bikers in the school and in the milwaukee area.

I'm going to Belize next year for my international elective. It's a program that's been affiliated with MCW, but it's not in the course catalog so you still have to do the away elective paperwork.

So, I ideally want to study abroad in either Japan or China (but the Phillippines does sound great). Would there be a list of programs/electives in which students can simply browse through, or would you have to meticulously look for electives on the internet? Also, how hard/easy would it be to find English-language-oriented electives in foreign countries (particularly in Asia)?

Ummm... you REALLY don't need to worry about that right now. The c/o 2009 who's applying for this stuff needs to worry about it. You can always google programs.

I know. I'm just getting way ahead of myself. 😛 It's probably due to pure boredom at this point.

hey, ecca, if you didn't already know, that's not an angry brownie, that's a domokun

I know~! 😀 He's SO cute! But whenever I wear my domokun sweatshirt to work, a lot of the doctors and nurses call me the "angry brownie" of the ER. 🙂 He does kind of look like a big brownie with sharp teeths, I guess.

Yes, they have killed many a kitten.

I wonder why and how he kills kitties since the little tag on him says, "Upon closer inspection we see that his monster-like features conceal a gentle soul with a body of pure fluff." He has a gentle soul, yet he kills kitties. Also, I guess with a body of pure fluff, he'll have to smother them.

no such thing!!!!

No such thing as evil kitties...wait, I take that back. My kitty is a moody gray blob. She actually might be evil.

Or pretend kittens... aka puppies.

Hahaha. You guys think up some of the craziest things!!! I love reading this thread. 😍

Now read back through the last few posts and see how cute your little minions of destruction really are.
