Definitely...it can't take more than 30 seconds for whatever program they run to place us in our classes. Kind of like the match, I guess...they just like to keep us waiting.

I actually to someone earlier today that there's probably some dark room somewhere with a server that takes up the whole space. It probably only reads binary code too.

Hi everyone! I will be joining the MCW crew this fall! I have been searching for housing within walking distance from the school (less than a mile 😉) and all I have found is the Wilshire Manor Apts- and apparently those are hard to get into. Any other suggestions? Anyone take the bus to school?

I take the bus to school occasionally, and if you can live on the 31 or 67 routes, you've got a straight shot, because they go right past the school. Check out the county's website - http://www.ridemcts.com/ - and see where those go.

There are some townhouses and doubles in the neighborhood that may come loose, but you almost have to come to town and drive around to look at the for rent signs. The individually-owned little places do not bother to advertise on the Internet. You could get to school anywhere on the #10 route, but the bus is not cheap around here, ca. $1.50 each way if you buy tickets. Might as well have a beater car. If you are determined, you can bike much of the year, but I don't do winter biking anymore, really.
 
Yikes! The bus fare could add up quickly. Guess I'll be driving to school. Thanks for the help- you guys are awesome!

I think you can get a "season pass" if you will. Don't forget that a car drinks $3.50/gallon worth of gasoline and requires insurance and parking as well.

A weekly pass is $16.00, as is a 10-ticket package. Cash fares are $2.00 each way--an increase since the last time I bought a pass.

There are commuter passes, but they have to be offered by the employer with a minimum level of employee participation. See www.ridemcts.org for more information on county transit.

Prowler and I used to get free passes at our undergrad institution, but MCW doesn't do that, probably because they're expensive for the school and way too few people would use them.

I seem to remember there being some discussion of offering bus passes during my M1 year, but, just like you said, I don't think there was enough interest to make it worthwhile for the student assembly to pursue.
 
I think I'm gonna be flying to the area in June to look for an apartment. Are there any other new students that are gonna be around? I was probably going to rent a car and drive around to check out apartments. Anybody want to split some costs?

Some people do have convertable tablet/laptops and they take notes on the Powerpoints in lecture. I have a desktop myself and use the computers in the labs or library at school if I need to. I've never had a problem.

Printing is 10 cents/page for black and white. Not cheap. Definitely not free.
 
Does anyone have the 2008 match list for MCW? I know it doesnt really mean all that much, just thought it would be interesting to look through.

The public list hasn't been published yet (the one without names) that I know of anyway. I've seen that they usually put it up on their website somewhere. We're not privileged to give away the match list with names on it.

And you're right; it doesn't really mean much.

we had a vote m1 year. in order to do the bus passes it was all or none. they were going to include it in our tuition & fees bills, and then everyone would have a bus pass. however, since ~95% of us either live close enough to walk or have our own car, it was shot down pretty swiftly.

I was thinking beginning of June, but I haven't bought my ticket yet... I've been too busy being lazy and working.

And is there any way to becoming a Wisconsin resident to get cheaper tuition? Or do you have to sign one of those forms stating that you will be staying in Wisconsin to practice after graduation?

I'm afraid it's too late. Basically you have to work in Wisconsin for a year while not going to school. This is a rough and wild summary of the rules, but close enough.

Samenewme is right, they make it unreasonably difficult to become a resident for tuition discount purposes. I even married a lifelong Wisconsinite days before starting school and that wasn't even enough for them to grant me citizenship for the tuition discount.

I was planning to go up from June 4 (Thu) ~ 7 (Sun). Of course, this might change because I have yet to buy tickets as well.

So, when I visit, I was planning to check out the school again (I didn't get a good look at the library during the interview). Could I be allowed to roam around in the school or is that a no-no? ... Now that I think of it, are the main doors at mcw locked w/o a mcw student id?
 
You can roam around most of the school at will on weekdays during the day. They lock up in the evenings and on weekends, but even then you can sign in at the security desk in the doors to the north in order to go to the library (if it's open).
