MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was planning to go up from June 4 (Thu) ~ 7 (Sun). Of course, this might change because I have yet to buy tickets as well.

So, when I visit, I was planning to check out the school again (I didn't get a good look at the library during the interview). Could I be allowed to roam around in the school or is that a no-no? ... Now that I think of it, are the main doors at mcw locked w/o a mcw student id?

If you roam then, there'll probably be lots of M2s around studying for Step 1. Just make sure to be quiet. They had some tour groups go through the library last year during step 1 study time, like of alumni or something, it was really annoying because they just kept talking so loudly.

I hate the economy right now. A ticket I bought in Feb for a friend's wedding in Hawaii just got cancelled due to the company going out of business! Anyway, I'm starting to wonder if I should just fill out one of those roommate surveys and let other people do the finding of a place...

HAHAHA! I saw that about Aloha Airlines last night. However, this means interisland flights are going to get way expensive again.

Sorry, I'm totally not laughing at you. I'm laughing at Aloha -- they suck. I've only had to fly them 3 or 4 times.

Some companies are helping take Aloha's passengers for a period of time. Is there anyway you can find out about that? I don't even know if Aloha has reciprocity with other airlines like mileage and stuff. I generally fly Hawaiian interisland (miles go with American).

Edit: Here's an article from the Consumerist about Aloha. Looks like you can look into flights from United.

My brother commented on the article

I'm a bit sad to see the demise of the airline but I'm not at all sad that their outdated 737s will no longer be taking off from Kahului airport. Although smaller than most airplanes, Aloha's jets were the loudest to depart from the airport because their noise suppression standards were decades old.

And that's enough for me to gladly say aloha oe.

Oh, and Go! Airlines, I like you. But you're weasly business practices and narcoleptic pilots make you a less-than-acceptable substitute in the market.

Narcoleptic pilots?

Yeah, you're right, United has a deal thing with Aloha. Unfortunately my ticket was completely ticketed by Aloha. So I just got screwed and decided to get another plane ticket. Hopefully I can get refunded by my credit card.
The shady thing was they didn't even notify any of their customers about the bankruptcy. If Aloha ever comes back, I will never ever be a customer!

Both pilots on a interisland flight (very short) fell asleep I guess... that's according to my brother.

I'd recommend never being a customer. When I've bought tickets with them (1x -- to get from Maui to the Mainland for med school) -- they canceled my flight, and had to put me on another carrier. Just as well. I've only had to fly them when tickets were bought for me by other companies -- eg. band trip to Oahu, swim meet on Kauai, connecting flight missed on Hawaiian due to Delta being stupid.

Helloooooo! La la la.

Guess what? There's a group on Facebook called "Medical College of Wisconsin Class of 2012." We all need to join! There's a roommate questionnaire thread going on where a few ppl have already posted the info about themselves similar to what we put on the school's questionnaire. This might speed up the roommate search for some people, especially those who are out of state.

Even if you don't want to do that, the group is a nice way to see who's going to be in our class in August.

That's all I've got.

🙄

That would be nice. I've always felt they released the roommate list too late to be of much use.

I love it! I have trolled on in there, since I need a roommate. Mine got tired of the long, non-self-shoveling driveway (given that we had the snowiest winter in the last 100 years, I can understand).

Hey Everyone,

I was visiting the area yesterday looking for potential housing, and came across some nice, reasonably priced condos (to own) and rentals near the Mayfair Mall... but I noticed that these homes have been unoccupied for quite a while. Is there something I should know before I step in??? The places were otherwise quite appealing.

Your insight would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

What are the names of the complexes?

I've heard that property taxes are so high that they make renting cheaper, even in the long run.

I don't know that area well, but I would say that if a bunch of them are empty, don't buy one. If the current owners can't sell it, you won't be able to, either, and four years is not enough time for you to get much equity and get your money back out what with closing costs and all. That could be just a sign of the depressed real estate market. Drive around the neighborhood at night to check for noise issues before you rent, and call Wisconsin Energies to find out the average utility bills (they'll tell you). Maybe talk to the neighbors and see if they like living in the area. That's all I got.

I think the Mayfair mall area would be a nice place to live. You really have to do a lot of math to see if you will come out ahead. You will save around 30,000 in rent alone if you buy a place. But you have to factor in property tax, closing cost and maintaining the place to see if you will come out ahead. Even if you can sell in 4 years for the same price you bought it would you come out ahead? If you had a roommate in your place, I think it would be a slam dunk buy the condo but i guess that you can never really be sure you will be able to find/keep one. In this market, you really do have a lot of leverage to get a good deal

Don't forget that almost all of what you pay in your first four years will be interest and you will not be building much equity. That's essentially throwing your money away just like renting.

You'll have to pay a condo association fee too.

Thank you so much for your input, everyone!!!

I figured out that there are better options out there, only a little further away. Considering that it is a "buyer's market" right now, i can still come out pretty good, if not just even, after 4 years of med. school.

So truuuueee! I guess it was just the surreal quality of the movie that appeals to me... and the idea that the fifth element would be a model-like woman with orange-red hair. 😛

I thought it was boron. That movie wasn't about boron?

Naked Woman in Cheney Glasses? No!

WASHINGTON (AP) - Get real, people. That is not a naked woman reflected in Vice President Dick Cheney's sunglasses. Although it kind of appears to be.

Have a great trip! The For Rent signs are starting to pop up in my neighborhood; I see them when I go running. I'm sure you'll find something.

how do med students afford places like wilshire manor or the reserve when they are living off student loans? I think mcw budgets about 500 per month for rent AND utilities!

You could afford them pretty easily with a roommate sharing a two bedroom. Wilshire manor can be affordable as a one bedroom if you keep a tight budget. I'm going to be at the reserve next year. And all of my financial aid will go towards rent, utilities, internet, cable etc. My parents are helping me with gas and food. Generally, people living at the reserve have their parents helping them because otherwise you're right it's not affordable. A problem for me looking for buildings is that a lot of them are fairly old and I can't be around mold and such (immunocompromised) so I had to find places that were newer. If you want a one bedroom there are definitely more affordable places. I was looking at the Martha Washington Apartments (tosaliving.com) heat is included and the one bedrooms are 1000 square feet.

Yep, my parents have a formal loan for me. I can't be around mold because I'm allergic to everything except cats, dogs, and food.

My arm still itches from intradermal allergy testing on Friday.

Yeah, I didn't realize how middle class I am until I came to med school.

But that's okay. 🙂

yeah i want to live by myself in a one bedroom...the reserve is ridiculously expensive for a one bedroom.

the wilshire is a little more reasonable...is it moldy? or relatively new?

If you'd like to keep your costs in check, look along Bluemound or North between 70th and 90th. It's a nice area, and the rent will be cheaper, since the buildings are older. I found one 2BR, heat included place for $620 a month. I would've moved in, but the landlady was a little ****oo. The 1BR places generally aren't a whole lot cheaper, but they're there.

The Reserve and Serafino are higher-end apartments, so you'll pay for that.

I want to know this, too. My old apartment seemed relatively new, but I later found mold growing under my sink once I moved in. I don't want to deal with that again, but alas, I too have a tight budget (hence, no super-nice place).

1 bedroom hunt is a lot harder than I'd imagined. 😳

I visit my friend at wilshire all the time and her apartment is pretty nice. She doesn't have mold growing all around her shower like I do. Can't wait to move next month! I have another friend living on 90th street b/t wisconsin and bluemound. Her apartment is definately older but she pays around 500 something plus all utilities. So maybe about 580 when things are said and done. Check out tosaliving.com they have quite a few one bedrooms normally. And you'll have to come and look at the rent signs.

Thanks Allerian!

Q: Does anyone know of any wing chung or muy thai classes offered around the area?

I don't know about those classes, but I do taekwondo (and will resume once my stupid foot fracture heals grrr...) and someone in my class does karate. Try doing a search in the yellow pages and see what you can find.

I *finally* bought my ticket to WI! 😀 Yay~!!! I hope my three-day stay will be fruitful. 😉

When are you going? I was gonna be going from June 6-8th.

Apparently someone else does Judo. Quite the school of martial arts

Me too...although most of my close friends are in the same middle class boat as me.

I was kind of shocked to find out how many med students hadn't ever had a job.

Or if they have, they haven't worked more than 25-30 hours in a week at that job. Before my senior year of college, I was desperate for money and in an excellent position to make a ton of it, so I was working 80+ hours a week. I just kept telling myself it was good practice for residency.

I think I always felt fairly middle class though, because I was busy mowing the lawn for the upper class.
