MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh i missed reading the randomness here while i was gone. 😀

i think i'll be going to milwaukee end of may or beginning of june... hopefully there will be places to live.

also... i dont know if this has already been addressed... but any opinions on the fountains versus normandy village? they seem to be similarly priced

I'm sure there will. Heck, I'll probably still have a vacancy.

I don't know about those classes, but I do taekwondo (and will resume once my stupid foot fracture heals grrr...) and someone in my class does karate. Try doing a search in the yellow pages and see what you can find.

My friend in WI does capoeira (sp?), but I wanted to try something different... I've already tried tae kwon do/judo/kendo. Then, the place that I knew of didn't teach brazillian jiujitsu or wing chung to women. Not fair~.

When are you going? I was gonna be going from June 6-8th.

Apparently someone else does Judo. Quite the school of martial arts

I'll be going from June 16th - 18th. I wanted to go up there earlier, but then, I found out that I was obligated to fly to Japan in early June. 😀

where do all you current mcw students on here live? jw so i can know what places to look at! thanks.

so far i know about wilshire manor, the reserve, and lincoln crest, and normandy village are there others?

I live at Mayfair Manor for another month. I've lived here for four years, really really like it.

I live in a duplex. If you're coming to town, be sure to drive around the area and look at for rent signs. Lots of smaller landlords don't advertise AT ALL except for signs.

I live in one of the ubiquitous 4-plex apartments near school, which you will find by driving around and looking for signs. I would like to put in a big plug for living close enough to walk to school/Froedtert.

I lived in a duplex at 71st and Lloyd (just south of North Ave.) my first year. Great proximity to school and really nice neighborhoods in that area. Definitely worth a drive around. Don't forget to check the bulletin boards at school for postings from the area landlords - that's how I found my place. Many are able to get you same-day showings if you are visiting from out of town and on a budget, timewise.

I live at the Underwood Station apartments. I like it here quite a bit, but it is probably a little bit overpriced. Definitely doable if you have a roomie or spouse though, and lots of students and residents live here. 2 miles from school and I walked/biked in for much of the first two years.

I live at the Royal Oaks apartments in West Bend. they're perfect if you like being in a very quiet, safe area with a small town feel.....oh, and you MUST LOVE driving 35-45 minutes to work + getting up at 3:30am for surgery rotations. and blowing tons of money on gas.

You make it sound so enjoyable. And you're knowledgeable about Normandy aren't you? So when are you moving back to Milwaukee, so you can hang out with the cool kids?

I lived at Normandy Village for the first 2 years. Nice sized apartment and takes dogs. I think it's a little overpriced. Garage parking is extra. Nice grassy areas with trees. Outdoor pool. Fitness area. Overall I liked living there. Downsides were price, and since it was west of hwy 45, nobody ever came to my house even though it's only 10 minutes from school.

Now I live on 68th a few blocks south of State St in a 4-plex. Nice location, reasonable price, takes my dog, hardwood floors, small yard. Downsides - no dishwasher, could use some more closet space for sure.

Found my current apartment on craigslist, so I would recommend looking on there too. It was very convenient to search using the filters.

I can pretty much concur with what she's said about Normandy. Very nice, but overpriced (though I had a better view and location on the complex than she did, so perhaps I got more of my money's worth). I enjoyed living there and I'd definitely have stayed all 4 years and into residency if it weren't for extraneous factors like having to "lay low" for awhile.

And like she also said, it seemed like Normandy was sort of isolated in terms of med students. There were a few of us there, but most people live east of school.

Hey all,

I'm going to be a member of the Class of 2012 and I am curious about diversity, something I don't think has been addressed yet in this thread.

What do you current Med Students or even potential Class of 2012 students who are familiar with the area think about MCW/Milwaukee's racial atmosphere. Any incidents stand out in your minds?

I ask this because MCW's class, while not completely un-diverse, is definitely lower than the norm. This is probably my only "concern" going into next year.

Thanks!

MCW is definitely not the University of Hawai'i, but after a while I adjusted to a majority of white people.

There are a bunch of active race based clubs: Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, African American.

What sort of incidents are you talking about? There are none that I know of at school like I experienced in high school (punched in the face for being white). If there were; it'd pry spread around the school like wild-fire, like it did in high school.

Hey class of 2012!

Just wanted to let everyone know of the new cycling club interest group that some friends and I started. We do mostly road biking but have some great mountain biking trails as well. Rides vary from just a few miles to a full century. Feel free to join us this spring/summer/fall. We will be trying to fit rides in between boards studying.

The site is here: MCoW Cycling Club

Any questions please contact me here: info (at) mcowcyclingclub. org

And in the current spirit of the thread, I live at the Overlook Apartments (about a 20 min walk from the school). It is located on Harwood Ave about a minute walk from the Chancery.

Thanks,
Scott

So I'm guessing you mean that the climate at MCW is good?

Yes. I wasn't sure if you also meant like Milwaukee in general. Typical big city with shootings.
Haha. Thanks for the reply. I think I can handle the shootings. There's been robberies every week it seems where I'm at.

Since I'm bored (graduating early = nothing to do but post on SDN), do people actually wear MCW gear? I like hoodies and sweats, and in the past 4 years I've just pretty much worn my undergrad apparel to class or just when I'm hanging out and bumming it. Am I going to be able to do this next year with MCW stuff?

quite a few of us have a couple shirts or a hoodie or something. If you wear nothing but MCW stuff people will probably wonder about you (and it's not all the cheapest stuff).

If I recall, at least 2 of my MCW shirts were out of sheer desperation (needed extra layer in the library...FREEZING with the A/C on during the summer).

And I just bought the MCW coffee thermos to pick up chicks when I was studying elsewhere.

I have my free shirt I got for helping with orientation and 1 hoodie that I got when there was a sale, and I was cold in the library too. I like my Arizona hoodie and English sweatshirts more. I tend not to wear much of the stuff from the school I go to while I'm in the school. My Dad has a bunch of MCW stuff (polos, coffee mugs and other stuff), and my mom has a hoodie.

I think the climate is fine and I haven't seen any incidents at all, but I won't promise you'll get the exact same answer from students of color. I may just be oblivious.

Milwaukee is not known for a well-integrated culture of diversity, but I have not seen news reports of racially-motivated violence. I can't say there's never been anyone ever pulled over for DWB, but I think that's common in a lot of cities. I don't think it's blatant or frequent.

That's as balanced an answer as I can give you. My shorter answer is, come on in! The water's fine!

Sure, look up the Frank Jude incident with the off-duty Milwaukee police officers from fall of '04.

Milwaukee has almost as many black people as white people (around 40% of each), and something like 15% Mexican. We've got more Hmong here than most other cities - a lot of people in other states don't even know what Hmong is. The neighborhoods aren't particularly well-integrated, so I could point out to you where different boundaries are around town.

DWB won't garner much attention in Milwaukee, but it sure would in Germantown....

How did I forget Frank Jude? Sheesh.

Ouch. I guess the lesson is to never be a male stripper, never accompany clients to a party hosted by off-duty cops, and never, NEVER mess with a white man's police badge.

(Rush Hour reference for you particularly dense ones)

Anyone live at Serafino Square? I'm probably going to fill out an application and I found the place online. $250 Mayfair gift certificate if anyone wants to be my referral. Seems like a waste not to have someone get it. PM me.

Hmmm, if no one else messages you that they live there, I do know one girl in my class who lives there. I'm sure she'd like it.

I am looking for a roommate who is vegetarian. Does any one have any ideas where I should start looking?

You can try e-mailing everyone on the roommate list when it comes out in June. If you want to broaden your net, you could try seeing if the Outpost Exchange (the newsletter/magazine for the local health food co-op) takes classified ads of that sort; I'm not sure whether they do or not. There are vegetarians in my class, but I'm not one of them (I go through phases, but it never sticks).

Any idea on books we're gonna have to buy? Or is there no chance I would have them and it doesn't matter? Do people ever sell their books to the incoming 1st years or will we just end up buying them at the book store?

First, wait and see if your big sib has any books to give you or to lend you.
Second, there's a used book sale that's nice to pick up some books.

1st semester:
You will NEED Netter. I'd recommend your own copy of that so you can mark it up.

Do NOT buy the embryology book. Biochem is survivable without a text, but there are some board review books with questions. The course has changed a fair bit since I was in it, when they made us take a cumulative final dag'nabbit. You youngins have it easy!

The anatomy text isn't 100% necessary, I bought it and read it occasionally.

I didn't become a voracious textbook reader until second semester, and my grades probably reflected that.

At the book sale, try to get BRS phys, Guyton, and Wheater's.

Unlike undergrad, the library has a couple of copies of the textbooks on reserve, so you can get into class, do some reading, and see what you like before buying anything. I also recommend campusi.com to get good prices, especially on international editions. Do not rush to buy textbooks.

Didn't you just used to recommend abebooks and I'd recommend campusi.com?

That reminds me I should probably read my ABCs of Acid Base Chemistry before medicine, or at least in the beginning of medicine.

why did wauwatosa smell so bad last night? Holy crap. Down at sendick's it smelled like fish and diesel. You might keep that in mind if you are thinking about moving to the reserve

There's like a foundry or something down there on State just east of Sentry that smells like that from time to time. I would agree that the proximity to the Reserve and some of the other newer condo places going up is somewhat unfortunate.

When did it smell bad near the Reserve last night? I went running at about 6:45, and it was fine. Granted I forgot to use my albuterol before, so I couldn't breathe 5min into it, but that didn't affect my smelling capabilities.

Side note: I've never noticed bad smells near the Reserve.

Usually I'm at Sentry or Walgreens when I smell it. Maybe the Reserve is upwind.

Matt, I was going to post something here (because I'm lazy), but just for you, it's going in the '08 thread. So there!

Is the area around the Reserve prone to asteroid strikes? You have some astronomical craters right outside of there. Now I see why you have a mini-SUV.

is there any way someone can list the full name of these first year books. Thanks.

Hey Current Pre-Docs,

I wanted to check how long winter break was for next year, but they removed last years calender and they only have the fall semester calender for 2008 up and not the spring (the spring link is for the current 2008 spring semester).

So, how long is your winter break? Will I come to find out that not only is med school lots of work, but I don't even get a month long break?

AH!

About 2 weeks. Month long break? I didn't even get that in college except for my study abroad.

thanks prowler!

The editions may change before you start school, but an edition one older will probably work fine and may save you a ton of money. Please note that I have most of these and my roommate, when I find one, will be able to borrow them.
