Hi all --

I received an email today actually from SDN regarding a MD / DO residency merger, and from the initial sound of it, it appears to me the goal is to level to playing field which I wholeheartedly agree with and think makes sense. Based on this, my thought was that DO students might have more of an advantage in regards to residency placement (not respective to MD students, just more so relative to pre-merger years); but only IF the merger does what it intends, and residency programs look at high performing MD and DO students in the same positive light; conversely, looking at low performing MD and DO students in the same negative light.

Upon researching more (I use the term researching loosely, mostly just browsing the SDN forums...), it seems many opinions I've come across seem to think that the merger will shutout a lot of DO students even further from ultra competitive specialties.

Any thoughts on this??? Interested to hear more opinions on this. Also can't believe this is the first time I'm hearing about this merger. Thanks!!

OP, use the search function. You'll find a lot on this.

There should be a sticky thread on this in the DO medical student forum if you haven't looked at it yet.

Hard to come to any conclusion about what's going to happen really. What is known is that formerly AOA programs will now have MD and DO applications sent to them. How PDs will respond to the increased number and diversity to these applications is unknown. So making any assumption is simply left as an assumption. Once we start collecting the data when the merger begins in a couple of years then we can see what's really going on.
