So today before work I was looking out one of the hospital windows at a parking lot full of cars that belonged to hospital staff. Among those cars I found what seemed to be a '99 or '00 Ford Explorer. On the dashboard there were 2 baseball caps: one for the NRA and the other was for the New York Yankees (lolwut?)

The real gem of this SUV was the license plate: MD FACS

Has anyone else seen pretentious license plates like this? Or any other MD ego fails - In this case a fairly old car that had to be spiced up by announcing to other drivers that he/she is a surgeon.

Haha I'm not mad. I've just never seen anything like it before and thought it was funny.

Lol.. whoever is driving that car is probably in some serious debt due to med school and undergrad which is probably why he or she has that car

Plenty of docs don't live lavish lifestyles. The ones who do often end up overextended and bankrupt.

I mean but most of them have at least average cars.. not super old ones

The point isn't the lifestyle that he/she is choosing by driving an older car, but the fact that they put MD FACS on their plate. I wonder what they were thinking/how they reacted at the DMV...

DMV worker probably has no clue nor cares what it means. I wouldn't do it personally but it's ~$100 splurge.

Maybe he has a boat or airplane that he cares about more than his car?

since when is 10 years old "super old" for a car? Cars should be lasting 10 years before the next one if you take any kind of care of the car.

Hahah i've seen alot! I saw one the other day that had UCI school of medicine around the plate and the license plate number was <3 MD/PhD....there was something else infront of it but i was too busy laughing to read the rest of his plate number

hehehe...

I put the license plate "TRMALRT" on my Miata 😀

Yeah, and "most people" can't find Europe on a world map. The richest man I ever met made all of his money by public speaking for fundraisers and rubbing elbows with multimillionaires. He said that against all odds, the valet parking lot was full of complete junkers. That's because the people who actually get rich do so by being completely tightfisted, so none of them would buy a car that cost more than $5000.

I have no personal aspirations to riches, but I want a low cost of living. You can count on my car to resemble farm equipment more than an auto company commercial.

Same here about the low cost of living. Honestly I would love to have maybe a 5-6 year old used SUV that gets good mileage=]

Gotta upgrade from the chevy frathoe after a while tho...

I've never seen anything that pretentious as far as I know. At least not from doctors.

Also to chime in on age of cars, the car I just replaced (finally died on me) was 15 years old with like 220K+ miles on it. My partner bought a new car (and I mean actual new, I thought I was going to get a 5 year old car) and I plan to continue using this car until it dies on me even if that means I become known as Dr. Family Aerospace : the Attending with the World's Oldest Car (TM).

When you are old, it's easier to pick up the gold diggers. Leaving out a bit of bait will attract them to you, so don't be so hasty as to call it a fail.

I'd be far more concerned about the NRA hat than any license plate.

Actually, they both paint quite a picture...

I thought it was funny that the NRA hat was sitting right next to the Yankees hat. Talk about opposites...

That guy is smart, he probably has enough banked to retire tomorrow.

Buying expensive highly depreciable goods is stupid.
Yeah. When I met this neurosurgeon to shadow I waited outside his clinic for him to show up and this old (1990's?) bearly running, ugly, paint pealing, loud motor car pulled up. A man got out and put on his lab coat I was like 😕. I assume he has money because he has a very successful pratice and his wife is the CEO of their bussiness. I bet he saves alot.

They may or may not own a newer car. They likely purchased the junker just to drive to work and back home. Or he has had that car for so long he may want to keep driving it until it stops running.

Those people you see driving a million dollar car have way more than one million dollars in the bank.
Or have overextended themselves financially to look like they have way more than one million dollars in the bank.

The running joke among the rich is that people who wish they were rich drive a porchse, bmw, and the like. The "real" rich, if chosen, drive cars worth 500k dollars or more.

Maybe this singles me out as one of the "not rich" but what the hell kind of car costs more than $500K?

What isn't wrong with the NRA?

Are you one of those people who thinks that "the people" in the 1st Amendment and "the people" in the 2nd Amendment are two different things, even in light of McDonald v Chicago?

Depending on the vehicle, yes. I know for some cars that are worth 1 million dollars require a down payment for several years worth of student loan payments (assume 200k dollars).

Dude, I think you've ventured into the wrong forum.
