Hello Guys!
I have stats which are 3.3 ish GPA and 27 mcat, ORM. I applied to md schools just because it was free ( I have FAP) and I was like why not.
Now yesterday I got an MD interview, Mid Tier Md school (OOS). This made me wonder if schools have to interview certain race/class/stats and then reject them later. I am just curious if someone with admissions experience can tell me how this works.
I will be going to this interview, and I already know they will reject me right after. I can not stop wondering why they want to interview someone, only to reject them later?

They wouldn't have chosen to interview you if they didn't see something they liked in your application.

Pretty sure that attitude wouldn't get you very far in any interview.
They are interviewing you because they are interested. You must have been somewhat interested to apply, even if it was free. So, why not go to the interview and see what happens? You have to show them you deserve to go there... they don't already know they will reject you. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I think people often forget that all of those GPAs and MCAT scores you see for every school... they're averages. If the school picked you with a 3.3 and someone else with a 3.9, that makes a 3.6. The school wants to interview you because you have something in your application it desires and wants to know more about. Sure, you may have to explain your grades and/or MCAT score, but giving a well articulated, reasoned response goes a long way.

I reread my post and I realized it did came out really negative. I apologize for that, I am still in shock, I got one month to get myself prepared for this one.

Trogghunter Check tuition for OO$.

Ha ha ha , it is actually cheaper then going to DO school in California.

Don't doubt yourself! If you get an II, then it means you have a genuine chance at the school (Unless its an alumni connection thing and adcoms only offered you an interview out of courtesy). If you received FAP, then you're socioeconomic status and your PS/secoundaries interested adcom's enough to see what you can offer to the table.

Plenty of OOS applicants (especially from California) that could fill that spot with great stats.

Check the MSAR for the school to see how many II's vs. OOS applicants they usually hand out and don't go in thinking its an auto-reject. As said before, schools don't have time for that.

I don't think adcoms will know whether or not you had a FAP waiver.

If you mark down disadvantaged, then they will see that.

I'm in the same boat regarding low/borderline stats and MD interviews. I doubt it's that simple. A school might find a diamond in the rough, or, more likely, they'll find a reason to reject a low stats applicant. The school has nothing to lose.

Thank you for word of encouragement! 🙂

prep for these interviews well. There is no doubt that you deserve them. Go into them with the attitude that you have what it takes and they MUST accept you b/c you are the best candidate.

I know of a student from a top 20 school who had DO stats and got into 4 MDs. She had a lot of research ECs. True story. ~3.4-3.5/29-30. Matriculated in a mid-tier MD (70+ Lizzy M).
Then again it was probably a n=1.

She was a non-URM.

3.5/30 is close to the average matriculated MD applicant... 3.6/31

It just shocked me how she got into 4 MDs with a 3.5. The school she got into boasted a higher MCAT score (around 33-34) and a GPA close to 3.8. She also applied very early.

Schools need to keep their acceptance rate low to look good in USNews. More competitive is better right? Why brother interviewing a bunch of marginal candidates that you actually might consider for a spot when you can interview a bunch of horrible deadbeat candidates that just get auto rejected post interview without wasting any valuable time discussing them. And you get their money for the interview as well, thereby helping to boost the local economy.
This actually sounds like a good plan. I'll discuss it with the Dean.

Gotta admit I was laughing so hard when I read this!

You got an interview. Go and try your best. Stop asking why, and be happy.

+1,000,000 I got an ii from an MD school that people with slightly lower MCATs and MUCH higher GPAs did not get, and at the same time got an auto-rejection from a brand new DO school. Who knows why.

Don't look back or why you got the interview; obviously they saw something worthwhile. Have some faith in yourself, and good luck!
