Been thinking things over and sometimes I think MD/PHD is really more up my alley. I kind of always had that inclination but thought I wasn't competitive enough for those programs.

I was wondering. After being accepted to an MD program, how difficult is it to try to enter the MD/PHD program? Do you essentially have to reapply to the school? Wondering if anyone out there knew anything about it.

I believe that, at many schools, once you enter as an MD student you have the option to apply internally to the MD/PhD program. I don't know what the acceptance rates are for this in general, but I heard that at Stanford it's about 75%.

Almost all schools will let you switch in after your first or second year, provided that you are in good academic standing and you have previous research experience. You will, however, lose the stipend and tuition for each year you are not in the program, or about $60K/yr... harsh!

Hey, also just by browsing your MDApps, it seems you are more into clinical research than basic science research. MD/PhD is if you want to do basic science research (biochemistry, genetics, immunology, etc.). If you want to do clinical outcomes or stuff like that, then an MD-only program is the way to go. Advice I got from a couple of PIs at two top UC med schools.

Also, you can earn a PhD during residency, in addition to the options posted above.

35 entering school and looking to do MD/PhD? You're going to be like 50 after residency!

unless you really want the title of the PHD, you could do a fellowship and still be able to become an academic MD
