A PhD will help for a lot of things, but an extra 3-5 years is only worth it if you plan to be a research guru. Those extra years could be spent in fellowships or being an attending and getting better at your craft, or taking well-earned time off.

So, don't think of a PhD just as a door to a good residency. That's like using a bazooka to shoot crickets.
