I can't update a lot of the schools on my profile, because the dates aren't right. It says I can only post a date between 01/2010 and today's date. I'm assuming that the start date is meant to be sometime in the past so that you can't "predict" acceptances of the future.

Also, when I attempted to update my profile, it said that I couldn't post a cycle in the future and highlighted that I am applying for 2010 admittance...

I was also able to log in and change some information with no long load times. I couldn't change some of my dates at first, but I then altered the 2010 AMCAS submission date and everything works fine. Congratulations xaelia, it seems like you've got this thing up and running now.

I hate this new MDapp page!!!!!! it's so slow and annoying! Why did we have to change it?????

For reals. I don't understand why everyone's hating on it so much. Of course, there will be problems switching over, but everything's getting worked out. I'm sure everyone would like something about it if they just looked around. It is xaelia's project that he pays for. He can do whatever he wants with it.

There were some bugs with my page at first, but I managed to fully update it today and everything looks like it's running really smoothly now!

It looks sleek and the trackboard thing is a pretty spiffy feature 🙂

it shows everything that I put anon... seriously?
Agreed. The option to hide our undergrad for a certain number of years was useful, is that coming back or do you no longer think it's needed for the site?
And what happened to the separation between applications completed and secondaries received and not yet completed? I use that function to keep me on track of all the apps...
Yeah, the date a secondary was received is one of the most useful pieces of information about a cycle for future applicants.
One little thing that I feel could be better is that when you update, you have to save information for each school instead of just making updates to all schools and then clicking save. This is really a problem now that it's so slow.
Yeah, being able to change and update in one swift move was pretty handy.

Two more points:
- Without a "secondary received" category, any schools whose secondaries you've received but haven't submitted just don't show up on your profile. I'm sitting on four secondaries, so it looks like I only applied to 8 schools.
- Unless we already attended the interview, we can't schedule when we're going? Like if I have an interview on 9/15, I have to wait until I attended to put that down?

Just uncheck the "interview attended" box and put the date it's scheduled for in the comments section.

sorry but people like me don't have time like mods to "look around" and try to figure something new out when the old one works just fine.

You can't. He's saying that you don't have to use mdapps at all.

👍

It's not that complicated. It will probably take you 5 minutes to figure it out.

Not today. Maybe someday.

I guess, if you're super-stalkery. 😉

I can't really disagree - though I don't imagine you usually have more than one or two schools to update each time you visit the site. Obviously this first update has a lot of stuff to fuss with.

Really? You don't just have them on your profile as "Applied"?

- Unless we already attended the interview, we can't schedule when we're going? Like if I have an interview on 9/15, I have to wait until I attended to put that down?

Correct. 1) you might cancel it. 2) when you do attend the interview on that date, and update your profile accordingly, it's a trackable event that other people who applied to that school will be notified of, and they might choose to contact you regarding your interview experience. If you check off "attended" before you go to the interview, and that event gets propagated, then it has no value.

Is there any way we can mute some information on our trackerboard. I have two application cycles listed, and for my second cycle, I applied to slightly different schools. I didn't, for instance, apply to AECOM or UNC, but since I applied to those schools my first cycle, I see information about those schools on my trackerboard. Since I'm not applying there, I don't really care....

Painfully slow... also, when I'm updating my school info, it's giving me an errors about the dates I already have in there... says they need to be between certain dates.

Haha, but seriously, the date a secondary was received provides insight into a person's cycle. It gives you an idea when a school starts sending out secondaries, how long it takes for someone to receive a secondary depending on when they submitted / were verified, how long it may take someone to finish the essays before they submit - these are all relevant details to the admissions process.

Also, it no longer says when you were verified. That's also useful. These are really the only two dates that are missing from this new version.
Really? You don't just have them on your profile as "Applied"?
Nope. I have yet to submit secondaries for Duke, Vanderbilt, UNC, and Emory; none of them appear on my profile.

Ah, I guess with the new feed it does make sense.

Question, is there some way to retrieve the old profile's dates for when we submitted secondaries? For some of my schools I didn't receive any sort of email receipt when I submitted, so I'm unsure of when I actually did.

Go to edit trackboard preferences (link at the bottom of the trackboard) and remove those other schools. 🙂

Try reading the thread. This has been discussed like 5 times already.

I am thankful for a website like this, but I must offer my honest opinion.

After the upgrade, this site looks prettier but is far less practical. What do we premeds really look for in these mdapplicant profiles? Stats/activities, demographics, schools, and dates. In the old one, all of these things are presented in one very easy to view page. But now, you need to make multiple clicks after reaching a person's profile to access these information. The slower server speed only exacerbates the problem.

Another problem is the lack of dates. I think all of the possible dates should be included for each application--primary submission, secondary reception, secondary submission, secondary completion, interview invite, waitlist(if applicable), and admission/rejection. Every single one of these dates offer valuable information on the school.

The last big problem that I can see is the lack of incomplete files. Some people update their mdapplicants profile diligently at first, but stop doing so after a while for whatever reason. Their profiles can still be very useful, they shouldn't be completely excluded. There used to be a choice to search incomplete profiles, but I can't find it now. Maybe it's there and I just haven't found it yet?

Oh, one more thing. It would be REALLY nice if the list of schools is alphabetized. It's a pain trying to look through a long list to find a school every time.

I think I should comment on the positives as well. I really like the addition of user names, it's much easier to recognize than a 5-digit number. I like the new comment format as well, as it has the latest comments on top instead of on the bottom now. Not having to scroll through every single school when updating your profile is also a nice touch.

I'm going to bitch like everyone else--the old page was better. Keep it simple, stupid. It works for google.

what about a way to save all changes to schools at once rather than one at a time?

I actually really like the new version 👍. The trackboard is great, it's more organized, and it's pretty. However, because the server is so slow, loading a new page or clicking a tab causes the page to time out, so that's annoying, but once it's fixed, I think it will be pretty cool.

I also really liked the option to search incomplete files. But more than that, I liked it when the "application year" made more sense and this years and last years applicants weren't mushed together.

Option - is their a way for the current year that instead of basing the application year on the date of amcas submission, we can write in "applied for matriculation in ____" since that's what the previous years used? pretty please?

sorry but people like me don't have time like mods to "look around" and try to figure something new out when the old one works just fine.

wha? the site is for comparing applicants and finding useful information. don't hate on the mods. anyway, they weren't the ones who made the change. and no need to "look around" anyway, they new site just appeared for you with your info in it. some sites wouldn't even do that - they could have just thrown out the old one, put up the new one, and said 'here, you do all the work' 😛

all that and I forgot to write what I came here to say.. like the trackboard a bit.
-does anyone else have a weird problem with loggin in? I can get to my page, but each time I log in, I have to do it twice. Enter info once, click login, and it takes me back to the login page. So I do it again, then it works. hm..

ditto.

I'll look into how dates are handled; it might be awhile until I get back to little tweaks like that. A little burned out from all the acute difficulties.

Server troubles ought to be, essentially, permanently ameliorated.

EDIT:
Legacy "applied for matriculation in year X" dates all had a year subtracted from them to match the new AMCAS submitted field. Now there's no confusing overlap of two sets of 2009 applicants - and this should help reduce the number of "It won't let me enter dates" e-mails. 😉

Ahhh yes, how did I forget about that? The trackboard is awesome!

I applaud you on your hard work, although, frankly, I felt that the previous version was much more efficient by packing everything onto one page. It's a drag to click through different tabs, especially because you have to wait for each one to load (rather than being pre-loaded/automatic). If we're making a comparison, I suppose it's more like Facebook and less like Twitter. But congratulations nonetheless on the new version.

The site is completely down for me, I can't load any pages whatsoever.

This is on two different wireless networks as well (though on the same computer, so that could be the issue). Not a browser issue also, as I checked firefox and IE.

http://mdapplicants.com/oldviewprofile.php?id=*

where * is your ID; you can see your old profile from the old site. Ish.
Yeah, I checked that out. But I guess there's no way to retrieve the date for secondary submitted, since we can no longer access the tabs on the old view? Also, have you figured out why it doesn't display the schools for which you haven't submitted secondaries?

I know you've done a lot of work recently and probably aren't in the mood to do any more coding, but a thought: what about combining the efficiency of the old site with the neatness of the new site, by making each section a tab like you do for each school's dates? If someone's description of their application or comment section is too long, it could just be tabbed and "minimized" so that their page isn't too long. That way viewing profiles that are brief and to the point isn't prolonged by having to changes pages to view all the details, while profiles that are very wordy and detailed or have a lot of comments can be quickly scrolled by minimizing sections. Just a thought.

It's not too bad once you get used to it... except I keep seeing X received an interview invite to school A, B, and C, while I have none. It's making me slightly depressed. 😛

also, is there a way to search for a category of applicants with an interview at "any school"?

I made a new mdapp account! 🙂

Great job, Xaelia. Thanks for being so responsive to our feedbacks also.

And for those who are having trouble looking up their schools because it's not in alphabetical order: use ctrl + F for now! 🙂

Cosmetic and UI changes are generally going to wait until I make sure all the underlying search results etc. are working correctly.

For instance, I had 6400 profiles with at least one acceptance in the old database...then 5600 profiles with at least one acceptance in the new database... (man, did I really lose 800 profiles?), but searching for applications with at least once acceptance only generates 1600 results.

So...there's something going on there.

And I need to figure out why the little Facebook share link I added on for fun doesn't work exactly right. 😉

No time to work on it today, maybe tomorrow afternoon and Monday.
