Hey Everyone,

I like to play video games occasionally with my friends online, or when I'm bored or want to relax. Basically I like to play games. So, my question is if there are any of you that have balanced gaming and studies. Or is school so rigorous that you have absolutely no time.

Thankfully I am not addicted to any games, I used to be when I was in middle school. Playing a game called Runescape (if you know what that is).

I was thinking about taking a PS4 or Xbox One with me so I can play but then I decided it might be too much of a distraction so I should just take a Nintendo 3DS XL and that way I can carry it around and play for a few minutes during lunch or something.

Just wanted to hear some thoughts and opinions on the topic.

Thanks!

If you are very strict with yourself you can do it without it hurting your studies. But, what happens is that people think they will just play a little and they end up wasting hours. You can try it out, if you feel that it is negatively affecting your studies you might want to keep it at home.

I only know 1 classmate that is really into videogames and it does negatively affect his studies.

I too am a gamer. You just need to schedule it properly. I am typically in school mode until 830pm each night, then make dinner, shower and play some video games for a couple of hours every night every other night. Leading up to exams I typically turn off the PS4 and I wont play until the exams are over. It is a great stress reliever!

I'm planning on bringing my Xbox One and playing Halo MCC/5 since most matches last 10-15 minutes during breaks.

I am bringing one of my gaming PC's with me. You have to make a little time to do something that you like other than study for sanity sake I would think. The key is being able to put it down and get about your business. For very engrossing games, when I was doing my UG work I would sometimes set my cellphone alarm to avoid the whole "losing track of time thing".

Yeah, makes sense what you are all saying. I definitely think that gaming would be a great stress reliever, but not to get carried away with it. I'm still a little cautious about bringing a big system like PS4/Xbone though, I just don't want to get into the habit of saying "1 more match" because fun > studies, any day of the week haha:banana:

Anyone have hardline? I was thinking about downloading it tonight. I've been playing Evolve lately.

If you are able to do this, I actually found gaming to be a great study-reward. For classes, I really hated studying for (*cough* ochem), I could always tell myself "Hey, if you study legit until X o'clock you can play an hour of CS:GO or something afterwards!" and that worked pretty well.

Evolve is on my list of things to do, but I am waiting for it to go on ridiculous sale on Steam, because I am a cheapskate

Not a bad idea. Incentive/Rewards area always good.

Dont have hardline, still have BF4. I dont think I will be getting hardline, doesnt seem too appealing to me. Is Evolve any good? I heard you have to spend A LOT of money on it or the game gets boring real quick.

1st year I use to be able to play maybe 2 to 3 times a week. I would watch a short episode of a TV show on my Xbox via Amazon Prime. 2nd year is a whole different story as I haven't used my Xbox much since August.

I'm actually building a new gaming rig now - just ordered the parts! Also have an xbox, but that will probs stay with my SO. Everyone needs time to just vegetate in some way. My choice is video games.

How's evolve? I was considering it but heard mixed reviews. I was going to try blood borne instead.

Yeah, I just got a new one up and running a couple of months ago here. It quite an obscene beast even by my standards .

Mine is coming with me, in college I've used it as a much needed stress reliever after a day of exams or a particularly tough day. Like anything, it's just got to be in moderation.
If anyone has an xbone and ever needs someone to play with hit me up. 😛 Most of my friends are still on the 360 and it's depressing.

I'm bringing my custom pc to my medical school.
I will play bf4 on my off time. Srsly its an excellent stress reliever and you cant play shooters for all that long before you get bored
Its the RPG-type games that will get you stay away from those!

Am I the only League of Legends player here?!

As a side note, I've only survived this semester through Destiny.

1st year hasn't been bad time wise. I unfortunately didn't bring my gaming computer, but I've binge watched plenty of shows on Netflix without much repercussion.

I think it's great. The 4vs1 style is something new. It's not for everyone, though. It's not an easy game. It gets kind of repetitive. It can be too slow for some people (the monster will run away a lot in the beginning of the round and you'll spend your time chasing him). You also have to be a team player otherwise your team will get killed pretty quickly.

I think the simple fact that a resident is on this thread talking about video games and the ones he (she?) plays should show that there's definitely time. You've just got to be responsible and know when it's time to put the controller down.

I just started! Probably not the best to get hooked on a game right before school starts, but my brother had been trying to get me to play for a while and I finally caved haha. I least WoW isn't in my life any longer....

Study(T)+Sleep (S)+Gaming (G)+Exercise (E)+Misc* (M)=24 (hours)
If studying is a constant, then you can manipulate the other four variables (S, G, E, M) to fit the equation.

*Misc includes bathroom duties, cooking, eating, traveling, etc.

Hey, I'm not in osteo school (Im in allo) but I gamed throughout my first year and third + fourth year. At some point I had a 200 placement in the world ranking in a popular game type in COD. I just matched into a competitive specialty, so the key is really knowing when to cut off gaming. I didn't game at all during step 1 prep nor did I game on Sub-I's or surgery rotations.

My advice would be to not take a gaming systems for the first couple months. If you see you have time then add it in. If you don't then forget it.

League of legends all the way- and hopefully I'll still be able to play it when school starts 😍

i play wow, cs:go, LOL, and hearthstone. when i start med school this summer i am planning on unsubscribing my wow account. i plan on playing hearthstone still since it doesn't take near as much time

My gaming doesn't affect my studies all that much. Maybe a bit. But generally I only game 4-6 hours on weekends, 1-2 hours per day on Friday-Sunday. Don't expect to have a 4 hour a day gaming habit and still be successful in medical school.

I assume you're talking about PC gaming. Never got into PC games like that, but the graphics are so amazing.

I believe you're going to KYCOM, so am I. We can be gaming buddies

I got bored of Destiny, they released too much stuff for PvP and not enough for PvE, but I did love grinding in it to get the best equipment.

Binge watching on Netflix is another habit I need to work on. But before school starts, I will binge like I have never binged before.

Nope, never even heard of tibia, when I played Runescape, a lot of people I knew were playing WoW. Never got into that, but I do love playing Diablo. Probably my favorite PC game.

Currently I'm waiting for the Witcher 3 and MGS5 aaaaand Kingdom Hearts 3.

Man you missed out. Runescape and Tibia are super similar and came out around the same time. Diablo II is still fun to play when I'm bored. Never did Diablo III though. Also really liked the Final Fantasies. In my opinion though, RPGs take up too much time and wouldn't be a good idea during medical school.

Oh and Dance Dance Revolution - that always brings out my inner nerd as well.

Good to see I am not the only one still playing Diablo II! I am a sucker for ARPGs ...Then again I am a sucker for most RPGs. I, too, shall be avoiding the RPG's once school starts because they are indeed serious time black-holes . It is a shame that Witcher III is coming out like 2 weeks before I move...

One of the docs I work with is big into gaming. Said he had plenty of time while he was in med school as well as time for socializing.

I'm bringing my Xbox One with me. It's all about balancing your studies. You are allowed to have hobbies while in med school.

Plenty of people at my school play, granted we're MS1. LoL is popular. I play FFXIV.

DDR haha, good times. I still have time to try out Tibia, but I think I will avoid it like the plague for reasons already mentioned. Diablo 2 is amazing, still like it better than 3 because it just seems so much more darker. But 3 is really fun too, I have it on both PC and PS4 and its amazing on both. They really fixed up what was wrong with it when it came out. FFVII is my favorite game from the series because of Cloud and Sephiroth, just so badass, I remember playing it on Playstation.

Diablo 2 Hammerdin is my go to character, then is the sorc. Gotta love that glow with Full Tal Rashas armor :smug:. I can get a solid month and a half in before leaving for med school to play the Witcher. Which I think I will do.

The monthly subscription is too much for me to pay, but it is definitely a good game.

no more than an hour a day or my brain switches into ADD mode, and it can take weeks for it to return to learning mode. But 30-60 minutes i find only beneficial, and of course fun.

mwhahaha so glad you guys appreciate diablo II - yeah sometimes I'll try and just do hardcore mode for kicks offline and see how far I get. Last year me and 3 buds did an in-house lan for 2 days offline and just ordered fast food and energy drinks and beat diablo 2 in hell mode down in the basement. Good bye nerd times. Diablo II will always be somewhere in the back of my subconscious

Battlefield 4 checking in. I'll be bringing my rig and Netflix machine (ps3).

Speaking of games, is anybody getting the new mortal kombat? Add me on PSN and let's play : scorpion6577.

Yeah, it was much the same here with Doom LAN games back in the mid-90's for me. Surprisingly enough, I have beaten Diablo 2 no less than 10 times solo, but never did any multiplayer with it. These days, I still tend to stick with singleplayer only with RPG-type games. I have never been a fan of the whole MMO thing that has erupted in the RPG realm. For multiplayer these days I generally stick to things like CS:GO, Team Fortress 2, and then do 3-4 person coop with friends on a number of other games.

. Good bye nerd times.

Aww don't say that, man. The nerd times aren't gone forever!:borg:

Literally pre-ordered it LAST year. I saw the trailer, showed it to my fiance (who doesn't play ANY video games) and she was like, that looks pretty cool, I would play it. Went to pre-order it the next day haha

Xbox One FPS fanatic here. Played MLG Halo and MW2 back in the day. Still wreck kids on halo and occasionally Destiny. Definitely bringing my Xbox to school but will only play in moderation.

Dota 2. Not much of a gamer but the occasional game here and there with friends can't hurt.

you're missing out- some MMOs are amazing. I speak from the past though. I used to be a hardcore gamer 10 years ago (I'm a bit older) but I dunno I'm not into all the new MMOs I'm the type that keeps revisiting my favorite games from the past. I liked team fortress back in the day- and counterstrike. Never played DOOM. Tried WoW and wasnt a fan of the level cap. Right now all I do is league of legends and/or DOTA 2. 30min-1hr games and pretty fun; easy to put down.
