med school requirements - UCSD lab

Hi guys,
I was wondering about the lab requirements for medical school. Most of them say one year chemistry/biology/physics with lab. At UCSD, the lab courses are separate from the instruction classes. Does this mean I need to take three quarters of each type of lab? Or just three quarters of the class, and then one quarter of lab?

Also, at UCSD some labs take a quarter but are worth less than 4 units. Would that work as 1 quarter of lab?

Take the lab of every science class you take.

Chem 1 + chem 1 lab
Chem 2 + chem 2 lab
Chem 3 + chem 3 lab
Bio 1 + bio 1 lab
Bio 2 + bio 2 lab
Bio 3 + bio 3 lab
Ochem 1 + ochem 1 lab
Ochem 2 + ochem 2 lab
Ochem 3 + ochem 3 lab

You get the idea.

not sure about ucsd specifically, but you typically have to take the lab series if they are separated. at some schools, labs are condensed into one quarter or semester with higher units/credits. e.g. physics I, II, & III lecture (4 credits each) and 1 quarter of physics lab that is 3 credits counts. i think the important part is that the credits add up to the requirements and you have taken both lecture and lab.

thanks for responding but i think im still confused
at ucsd the classes go chem 6a, 6b, 6c (g-chem series, each class being worth 4 units quarter system)
there's no 6a lab or 6c lab, only 6b lab (with is taken separately for 3 units)

also, gen bio classes have no labs available. only upper division bio labs are available...and they don't come attached to any classes.

This is probably a very specific question, but if anyone knows about bio lab requirements at ucsd for med school, or physics lab requirements if you took the 2 series, let me know.

only bio lab i took was BIBC 103 and i passed out of major requirement for another bio lab with 2 BISP 199's. this is fine at most schools so far, i havent run into problems.

ucsd med itself does not require any labs.

I think BIBC 103, CHEM 6BL, and CHEM 143 should be enough. (Is 6bl 4 units?)

As for physics, the 1 series has lab with class. You may run into problems with the 2 series because the lab, 2cl or whatever, is only 2 units.

6BL is 3 units but it should be 6... it's such a pain in the @ss.
143A is 4 units.
2CL is 2 units but i had to take 2BL also. i don't know if that's the case for those who aren't required to take it.

6BL is probably the worst lab ever.

Anyway OP, I think you'll be alright with 2CL and 2BL for physics. I'm not sure about UCSD med school specifically, but most schools either want just one lab or a certain number of credits. If you took the 2 series, you'll need both labs to satisfy those schools with certain credit requirements.

You only need one lab class for each subject. You have to take CHEM 6BL and CHEM 143A.

For biology labs, any one of BIBC, BIMM, or BIPN labs will do (ex. BIBC 103 or BIMM 101 are common). As for physics, you can only take one PHYS lab, i.e. PHYS 2BL or 2CL. You do not need to take both. I personally recommend 2CL over the summer (really easy).

If you are unfortunate enough to be doing the PHYS 1X series, I think you will need to take all three quarters of PHYS 1XL.

Good luck in 6BL if you haven't taken it... haha.

I went to UCSD. Not how it works. You take the full year lecture series and then one quarter of the corresponding lab. Unless you want to take more labs out of interest, but that's all most (if not all) med schools require.
