3.60 overall GPA, 3.50 BCPM, 32M Mcat, Chinese CA Resident from UCI
Took 1 year off after graduation to work on ECs:scared:

ECs:
6 months shadowing Pediatrician
1.5 years Hospital volunteer at 2 different hospitals
service chair for club ~80+ hours community service
1 year Clinical research in the emergency department, 2 poster presentations
1 year visual neuroscience researcher, no publications
PT/OT clinic volunteer
Teachers aid volunteer
working as Chinese/English teacher for children and parents
working as Behavioral Therapist for autistic children and families

I was wondering if anyone can help me filter out my reaches to help me save some much needed $cash$! My ECs seem weak without publications or 3+ year commitments, but I am continuing my ECs throughout this cycle.

I am pretty average on my stats and ECs and any tips on what schools to add or remove would help tons! Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Are you a very string christian? If not, knock off Loma Linda because the environment might not be right for you.
Do you have strong ties to West Virginia? If not, remove WVU
OOS is very hard for FIU, SUNY...

I think you can pair down this list by looking closer at each of these schools. The GPA/MCAT numbers are only one par of the story. Start by going through the MSAR/school websites to see which schools actually will be worth the odds given your OOS status.

Also florida oss tuition is extremely high

Don't forget for most state schools that you will need to have even better stats to be considered. most of their low stats will come from in-state...not out of state. just something to think about.

Here's what I'm thinking:

Albany Medical
Albert Einstein
Creighton University
Dartmouth Medical
<-reach? I don't remember the general stats from here..
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA <-reach
Drexel University
Eastern Virginia Medical
Georgetown University
<-reach, high tuition
Jefferson Medical Coll.
Keck Sch. of Med.University (USC)
Loyola University
Medical College of Wisconsin
Michigan State University <---do you really want to pay the ridiculous OOS tuition for this?
New York Medical College
Oakland University
Pennsylvania State
Rosalind Franklin
Rush Medical
SUNY Upstate
Saint Louis University
Stony Brook University
Temple University
Commonwealth
University of Toledo
Tufts University
Tulane University
University of California, Davis
University of California, Irvine
University of Cincinnati
<-reach?
University of Colorado
University of Maryland
University of Rochester
Virginia Commonwealth University <-this school takes a good deal of OOS:)
Virginia Tech Carilion
Wake Forest University
Wayne State University <--another high OOS tuition place...?
Wright State University

I didn't take out many, just the ones that I thought might be super reaches (as defined by stats, ECs, and/or state residency). I also took out the schools with crazy number of apps, because it's hard to be "outstanding" with that many to be compared up against. I left in the reaches that I thought you'd have a good shot at..but they're just my opinion :D

:luck:

Thanks so much for the help! I really did mostly only look at numbers and wanted to apply broadly (broadly = everywhere haha) just to increase my chances since my instate schools in California would be difficult with my stats.

Honestly, I would be satisfied getting any medical school, but hoped to go to a New York school! I was wondering since they were removed above, were my stats too low for schools like Hofstra and Boston?

I took out Boston U b/c of the high number of apps, and Hofstra b/c of the tuition cost. Also, Hofstra isn't taking that many students this year..

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and decrease my school list!! I'll add Florida Atlantic and Cooper (NewJersey) that are new to my already exhaustive list....

But with everyone's help I am now down to ~40 schools!!!

Thanks again for the input and if anyone has anymore tips, please let me know! Even ways to fill in some gaps that I have in my application...
