I'm a first year and amazed that I really don't like it at all, considering that I love to learn. I did expect to study a lot, but did not expect that the material would be so uninteresting. I'm hoping that year 2 will be better, but I'm not holding my breath. I do enjoy interacting with patients and so I'm looking forward to getting to year 3.

were you a non-science major?

Most of us feel the same way, don't worry its normal. Overall I'm glad I'm here but it really is the hardest thing I've ever done. Ughhh... I have to go back on Monday, I just want to slack. 🙁

No, it doesn't, at least to me. I guess I'm the only one who actually loves this. Yes, you can label me as '' unbalanced '' now 🙄

I loved my first semester as well. I didn't feel like I was memorizing a lot of stuff either. Perhaps the fact that I was out of school for a while had something to do with this...

I'm pretty glad I wasn't a premed. The info is all new, which makes it somewhat interesting......

Yeah, unfortunately, I can't enjoy the wonderful feeling of solving some challenging problems anymore. Plain memorization is not my thing...

yes.

although i can't wait to be able to prescribe narcotics for myself. 😀

Well, I don't like all the memorizing and plain old bs stuff but today when I was talking to the guy who came to clean my chimney - and who DID NOT wear protection while cleaning the flue 😱 - I was really remembering why I love medicine.

He and I talked about the carcinogenic effects of the creasote and the reason the aftereffects of burned wood can change the structure of your dna. While I may have scared the **** out of him, I think he will be wearing a respirator and some special protective gear from now on.

Medicine to me is helping people to take better care of their bodies, and today I was reminded of that. 🙂

Welcome to the frustrations of medicine as well..... more than likely, he still won't wear personal protective gear.

Gee. You mean he'll be just like all of those obese post MI diabetic pts I've been taking care of who have a half empty bottle of Mountain Dew at bedside & keep leaving the floor to smoke?

You guys are right! I admit it ...

But, I gotta add that I told him that the chimney sweeps in the 19th century had an incredibly high rate of testicular cancer and that was what I think scared the bejebus out of him ... 😉

 you've gotta find what'll motivate them 👍

While it is frustrating to spend years memorizing mounds of info...to then be expected to "fix" patients who do absolutely nothing to take care of themselves, you do actually get through to some of them.

Hmmm I'm thinking the, 1) Yell, 2) Shake like mad 3) Repeat will work to make patients do what I tell them to do 😀

Or you could be like BF Skinner and find out what psychologically motivates them to do stuff and alter their environment to influence their behaviour. Of course you then sort of give up on free will.
