So, are jeans + clean plain t-shirt/sweater fine for pre-clinical day-to-day? Should I be switching to jeans with a collared shirt a lot more instead?

Either are fine

Thoughts on striped slacks?

Generally ugly

Should I buy khakis (or will slacks be fine)?

What?

What about athletic clothes like a fleece or like a wool sweater?

fine

since when wool sweater is athletic attire. Not since the 19 century.
Or maybe early 20th.

Looks like I will have to spend some time cleaning up my wardrobe.

My grandmother says "slacks". 😛

Unless your school has a dress code, jeans/shorts and a clean t-shirt are fine for pre-clinical classes. Even better will be your pajamas while you stream the lectures from home.

Striped slacks are ok on women, probably a little too metro on men outside of wearing a suit.

Fleece or a wool sweater is fine. You will need a fleece in the hospital as well during clinical years; its always cold.

I was thinking merino wool kind.

Sounds good. My oldest suit is an idiotic pinstripe and I havn't worn it in 3 years. Wasn't sure if I'd be able to pull of just the slacks. f* it then.

Oh, and by the way, say I am going to medical school in the middle of the tundra. Any preference on jackets?

Currently packing my stuff to move across country for med school...as I'm packing my nicer jeans and tops I'm thinking who am I kidding...I'm going to be living in yoga pants and comfy shirts all day everyday just like I did during college.

Invest in some lulu. That's all we wore in school. Hell I still wear a ton of it to work. Ya can't tell if I'm wearing spandex bike pants under my white coat if I have on nice shooz and my hair and makeup is done 😀 fancy wins!

Wow, that is not a good-looking model. Still, I could see people that I went to school wear stuff like that.

It beats the med student I saw today wearing buttoned short white coat, oversized khaki pants pulled up and tightened with a belt making it look like it had an elastic waist, square toe black shoes, and white athletic socks.

I am not a fashionable man

Hm thanks for the suggestion but after perusing the website, it seems that lulu may not be well suited for my purposes

Are there any stores or brands in particular that make good low-maintenance men's shirts, preferably in slim fits?

Victoria's Secret has nicely fit and comfy yoga pants as well (semi annual sale also)!

Ah... yes.... perhaps I should have included "low cost" in there as well. On-sale price of $65 is a bit rough.

FML nailed it above.

Brooks Brothers non-iron slim fit dress shirts, with an Ainsley collar.

Wait about a week - they usually have a big sale after fathers day.

Also, $65 isn't very rough when you consider that I just had to replace my first one this year, after 6 years of wear.

The short suit looks ridiculous, but the Ludlow is half-canvassed and not a bad deal on sale. What's your problem with it? The 2.5" lapels?

J crew had like a 2-3 year stretch where their suits were great. Decent construction quality, not the bag-like fit of a Jos Banks or Macys suit.

Now they've been on a downward spiral of decreasing quality, increasing cost, and worse fashion.

Yeah, for womens clothes too. I cant with some of their stuff. And it used to be cute. Now its just meh.

Also, no Brooks Brothers anywhere near here. Maybe I'll order one after Father's day if there's a big sale, but I'm hesitant about ordering fitted shirts without trying them on first.

Embrace the glory of online shopping.

I rarely set foot in a retail store anymore. It's so much more efficient to shop online.

Sometimes I think I personally keep Amazon in business.

But I have so much trouble finding clothes that fit properly when I'm shopping in person I can't imaging buying clothes online unless I had previously tried the item on elsewhere.

they aren't cycling pants if they don't have the padding though.

Now seriously, dress nice when seeing patients. You are going to feel like a boss, and makes your life easier.
If am doing h&p with my swag on with other student, patients cant really stop looking at me for approval while the other student makes questions.

Can you be specific about the decreasing quality?

First question answer=Everyday.
At our school, the required uniform for guys in lecture is navy/black suit with tie or bowtie for the old-school types; girls require a dress with flats or heels--color of your choice. In clinic, tuxedos are required for guys, while girls may opt for an inexpensive ball gown with three inch heels--white coat and ID mandatory for both, of course. Shoes must be adequately polished at all times--you automatically lose 10% of your final grade in CDM if you are caught with scuffs on your shoes.

But we're pretty laid back.

.....I almost took you seriously

For most formal med school events here down south, I wear a seersucker suit and a fedora. When I'm really dressing up, I also carry a cane with a brass crawfish handle. Them wool suits are just too damn hot down here.

And yes I'm 100% srs.

everything south of the mason dixon is just odd
Yet it is very practical, given the conditions. Seersucker suits have vents all over and are made of very light material. It's easy to stay cool in one, no matter what the heat and humidity.

I'm from the north myself, but I've definitely found it's best to adopt the local customs. It's kinda fun, too!

sorry. my worldview is very NYC-centric

indianapolis was a massive culture shock for me 😱
It's ok. I went to Indianopolis once too. Went to a restaurant, reflexively asked for a sweet tea, and the waitress said "We don't have sweet tea, but I can bring you some iced tea and you can add sugar to it." I also went 😱

There's no good seafood to be found anywhere there(what pond did you get that fish from again?) and all the best rated restaurants are steakhouses. Effing fantastic for a brown person like me. ><

Let's pretend that I'm poor

The Banana Republic non iron shirts are nice. They come in classic, slim, and tailored slim fits. They "retail" for $80, but 40% off sales are the norm for them. You also get a 25% off coupon that stacks with their usual sales when you sign up for the making list. I've gotten most of mine for somewhere around $30-35, which is a great value for what you're getting.
