Med schools shouldn't accept non-science majors

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
because: ( I think)

1) they want easy way out
2) probably can't handle hard science courses
3) people that major in humanites or English or something like that are crazy
4) don't have true passion for Biological Sciences

edit: took out some inappropriate contents

Those are some well founed assertions my friend. Undoubtedly you have conducted some exhaustive studies to prove these claims?
Do medical schools accept people they don't think will handle the courseload? hmmm. Let's just cogitate on that (for the OP, cogitate means to think or ponder. Pondering is like prolonged thinking,)

Sorry, I shouldnt' have brought up the VTech incident. That was uncalled for. Anyways, I am bitter to see how many non-science majors get into good med schools.

I can't believe I'm reading this one--as a graduate of a private liberal arts college with a double concentration in asian history and biblical studies, who put myself through a rigorous postbac and spent considerable time continuing to study humanities, this is just plain insulting. The practice of good medicine involves science at its core but would suffer terribly if the only people pursuing it were ONLY rounded in scientific study. And in my interviews at both "good" and "average" schools, it was crystal clear NO ONE was truly interested in the "major" declared on my bac certificate, but whether I was a well-adjusted, well-rounded, complete adult with the ability to think and learn. If you're bitter, then get INTO medical school and outperform those "non-science" people on the Steps and in your clinicals.

Don't even waist your time. There is an obvious lack of maturity on the OP's part to even consider complaining about this.

Having taken two science majors, I wish I did a humanities major so I could at least have had some left brain activity......made do with the required humanities electives.

There's a fine line between "well-rounded" and "just plain useless"...😉

I'm only kidding, my degree in International Politics will not be paying the bills either.

I think nonscience majors just have more time to do a lot of other thiings then study. Granted they still must do well in general bio, physics, chem, ochem, they do not have to take classes that force you to live in the library like Pchem, Genetics, Cell Bio, Biochem, Differential equations, etc.

I had to live in the library to finish my English lit and history papers, and I spent much more time reading for my humanities classes than my biology classes. Cell was just one text book, history had like, five.

Oh ZING. hahahahaahhah. No, I deserve it....what can I say? You'd be amazed how you can make yourself believe that YES, THE WORLD NEEDS HEBREW BIBLE EXPERTS when you're 18 (shrug)

Well there's your problem right there, everyone knows most of the market share is for Aramaic Bible experts 🙂 At least then you could get a job making movies with Mel Gibson

My little sister, who is now making considerably more money than I am, devoted almost a year of her time in college to studying the Dutch juvenile justice system (yes, apparently they have one). I still tease her about it, right up until she points out that I won't be needing to file a tax return for the next four years.🙁 Hurts because it's true....

P.S. I like your bulldog

I really wish someone had let me know that getting an MBA in finance was taking the easy way out...... 😀

They always need people on the history channel... go for the gold!!

I kid. 😀

Based on my experience, students who go the engineering or nursing routes have a tougher path in college.

Oh, I assure you, if I'd known about Mel's project back in the late 90's I would have been all over that. But that's for another thread. 🙂 We're feeding the troll.

Isn't he cute? It breaks my heart I'm going to have to leave him with my grandmother when I leave for school next month--it's just not fair to him to take him with me.

Actually, this is funny. I shan't feed the troll but wanted to comment on a tangent: I'm a gilr who started out as an English Lit/Vocal Performance double major. Guess what? I didn't want to teach Shakespeare and I didn't want to sing for my supper. I really didn't have the cajones to be a performer (it's hard work and very rough on the ego). I took the easy way out by switching to a biology major after my junior year. This extended my undergrad by another year because up till then I had hardly taken any "hard science" courses, just something to fulfill my core requirements.
Heh. My little brother finished a music education degree and I'll tell you, some of the advanced theory stuff is pretty difficult. I'm far too lazy a singer to learn all that stuff. Also he can play pretty much anything he picks up...bah. And after all that he's in divinity school now!
The OP is a geek. 😀

OP, I like your style! 👍 You are hilarious. Get back on here and defend yourself against the barbarian hordes. I want more gilrs and bengals!!

Wow this is my first thread-hijacking--exhilarating. So, I have been thinking about this, because I have been thinking about getting a dog (finally have a place with a yard) but know I can't properly take care of one during med school (am lucky if my socks match and fly is zipped most days). I would definitely pay a little extra in tuition (at this point, it just doesn't matter) for the school to have a couple of dogs for us to play with. Like, you could sign up for a half-hour of throwing the tennis ball when you just can't handle any more Krebs Cycle and need a break. I know I'm not the only one who would go for this.

I think that arrangement could work rather well, except the dog might get tired from a bunch of extremely emotionally needy, physically exhausted meds playing with it all afternoon. Plus, I'd probably get attached. But you know...visiting the pet store is free!

THIS THREAD HAS BEEN HIJACKED. OFFICALLY REQUEST MOVE TO THE "PUGGLES AND NON-SCIENCE MED STUDENTS" SUBFORUM IN ALLOPATHIC.

Whee!

It doesn't matter. I still think non-Science folks trying to get into med school the easy way are 👎thumbdown👎
I am going to call the internet cop to get this hijacked thread back 😀

Buddy, this thread is coming apart faster than Carson Palmer's knee in that Steeler game.

That's right, I went there. Deal with it.

(It's my compassion for the suffering of others that led me to pursue medicine)

Depakote, those t-shirts are pretty funny--what does it say on the med school admission guide one?

Oooo, the OP really is a little trollathon. Listen to his OTHER brandnew SDN Words o' Wisdom:

ON WHITE WOMEN

"They are hot but I was wondering why they have such low standards. They don't mind if their current lover white bfs have had f***ed many other blondes, latinas, asians, blacks or whatever in the past. They always say, "as long as he is faithful to and love me now" or something like that. Although many asian girls are losers and go for many white guys that don't shower and stuff, at least many of them that are still "untouched" have high standards. I just wanted to point this differences out."

ON PATHOLOGY

"I am not dead set on being one. It is one of many fields that I don't mind doing. However, someone told me that only doctors with no people skill choose this field, and I don't know what adcomm would think. Should I not even mention about it during interview, etc ?"

....I now quietly smirk with the satisfaction of knowing medicine is safe from this man. And thanks Depakote, I think I'm going to order one of those.

actually, the second one wasn't mine but whatevers

Wow, I think that demonstrates why maybe taking a class or two outside the "hard sciences" building isn't such a bad idea....

Although, I have to say, BWW you could be the Jack Handy of SDN. Those are some Deep Thoughts you've got on white women...

EDIT: Just got depressed by the idea that most kids reading this board are probably too young to remember Jack Handy. I am so old....

No worries zeff. There are other old farts online.

"When a child asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell them is that God is crying. If they ask why God is crying, tell them it is probably something they did." - Jack Handy

I majored in Hard Science and I studied my butt off to just to get into a med school while this gilr I know majored in English and minor in music gets into a IVY school. And she didnt study as much as me

The "gilr" you know that majored in English probably understands how to use 'an' instead of 'a.' She probably also understands the difference between 'me' and 'I' too.

Oh.. and she probably isn't a tool.

EDIT: Just got depressed by the idea that most kids reading this board are probably too young to remember Jack Handy. I am so old....

Oh no no Zeff, my sides hurt from laughing, but I remember.

Someone should write a book...a book about a whale and a man and the sea, and at the end, there should be a blank page. But if you lick it, it should taste like Kool-Aid.

I'm sorry to paraphrase...

Have you considered that while you were taking nothing but science courses, those students who majored in the humanities were learning how to write coherently? Your posts are poorly written and have poor grammar, so maybe you didn't get into school because of a poorly written personal statement. I know it's a generalization, but I'd have to say that students who major in areas other than the sciences have more interpersonal skills, which is critical to the practice of medicine. Medical schools graduate clinical physicians as well as researchers. Doctors have to lead a medical team, give orders, and command the respect of their patients and coworkers. Students who major in the humanities have to give oral presentations, write papers, and work in groups, whereas one could major in science without speaking to another human being. So, while science majors are learning more science, the liberal arts students are gaining communication skills... and if they have applied to medical school, then they have clearly taken the required science courses, so they have learned the necessary science as well.

Clearly there are exceptions to every rule, so don't take this literally, but these are some things to consider about the other majors and how they ultimately relate to the study and practice of medicine.

The thought of all the "hard science" people I took classes with for four years all being doctors and being the only doctors out there terrifies me.

Don't you know how annoying and neurotic and anti-social most "hard-science" premeds are?

Oh God! Is Jack Handy that far back? Have I become old? Say it ain't so.

Wow, you fail. Not only did you take more science courses, you didn't even do as well as a non-science major on the MCAT. Just give up already.

Actually studies have shown that non-science majors usually do do better on the MCAT than science majors do. Its because of all the reading comprehension.

LOL greatest thread ever.

OP should print these posts out and frame it; it'll be the best achievement he's had thus far.

This thread is funy and sad at the same time. I would like to add my .02 in this thread. It does not matter what major you are when applying to medical school. All you need to do is get a college degree, take the courses that are required, take the MCAT, and do whatever else is required for admissions to medical school. It really is that simple. This is not brain surgery. Isn't there some studys that have shown non-science undergraduate students tend to do better in general in the first two years of medical school then do science majors as undergraduate?

I have taken a lot of science courses and I will say that I would rather talk with people outside of science about every day life situations and current events. For the students who I talk to on a daily basis, the science (wich are all pre-med for some odd reason - all eight of them) students tend not to have as good of people skills. I have four freinds that are non-science majors and I talk to them a heck of a lot more then I do my sicence friends. When I talk to my science friends it seems like I'm talking to the wall half of the time and when I talk to my non-science friends we can have better and deeper conversations. I have found talking to education and religous study majors the most interesting and fun. Most of the time when I talk to my science friends you can talk for like two minutes and then they will say it is time to go and stick my head in the textbook for four hours to memorize that next equation for physics or general chemistry, and then I'm off to talk to my humanity friends.

I majored in Hard Science and I studied my butt off to just to get into a med school while this gilr I know majored in English and minor in music gets into a IVY school. And she didnt study as much as me

Who's fault is that? The girl who majored in English? If you picked a major that generally requires more or different levels of study than other majors, that's your own damn fault, and you need to live with the consequences.

If you didn't study hard enough to do well in your classes, what business do you have pointing at someone who did what they had to do and got what they deserved?

Grow a pair.

Come on, Jack Handy's not that old.

"The face of a baby can say so many things, especially the mouth part of the face."

"It saddens me that a family could be torn apart by something so simple as wild dogs."

HAHA OMG. I can't believe a thread like this was created. I play paintball so I'm into the paintball forums. Its sad when there're smarter threads over there then here =/. Anyways, I guess the MCATs will even everything out.

Everyone takes the same pre-reqs- and obviously they nailed them or they wouldn't be trying for medschool. Also, medicine isn't all about science. it's about diversity and idividuals, it's about social issues and how you successfully deliver medicine in a variety of circumstances. Being a good Dr isn't about having a solid science undergrad it's about understanding medicine and those it affects. I shutter at the thought of having a physician who only understands the science that makes us humans instead of an a solid acknowledgement of what shapes us as humans.

I am sad for you... something must have really jaded your view of medicine.
