Hey SDNers, just curious what the typical class size is and does the size of the class make a huge difference? Curious what your think.

There's a range....some schools like Mayo and FSU have around 40 students, I'd say the majority of schools have about 100 students, and others like Temple, Finch, MCPHU have about 200....

I would prefer a larger class size because I always like the opportunity to meet more people, but many prefer smaller classes so they can really get to know their classmates.

Overall, I don't think it makes a huge difference. I think undergrad affilliation or other grad schools in connection to your med school might make more of a difference because it contributes to the overall atmosphere of a school. :)

it's not the size that matters, it's ... the quality of the class

:(•••••that's what i get for being lebanese :(

...and i've always been on a mission (assassin) but only recently from lebanon :)

i think it really depends on the person. i know if a prof is not too good, i learn MUCH better if the class is small. if it's large i tend to tune out unless the prof is really engaging. i think that's just my personality though. i always prefer a few close friends to loads of acquaintances. once there are so many people, i end up not participating and not feeling involved.
as far as whether or not it really matters socially etc... in med school. i don't know, b/c i'm not there yet.

I have heard that maybe in the first two years of med school you may get to see the same people but after the third year, you really don't see them much anymore.

I thrive on big classes because listening to professors makes no difference to me. I teach myself the material. Therefore, big classes are cool for me because I can sit in the back of the class and study without the teacher picking on me for answers to stupid questions. I can just relax back there and listen if I choose to do so. My ideal class size is 100 students MINIMUM!!! So, medical school will work out for me because my class size will be between 144-150 students. :D

Starting LSU-NO, with a class size of about 165. As far as I am concerned, that is perfect!

Now that I have a little bit more time to write, I wanted to let you know that that was a really poor joke to make. I'm not lebanese and I was really offended. I know you meant it in fun and all and didn't mean anything serious by saying that, but you shouldn't stereotype any one race like that. Some subjects are just too delicate. Come on....we are going to be the future doctors of this nation. We should treat everyone equal and look past stereotypes. Everyone is equal in my eyes, it doesn't matter if you are lebanese, french, chinese, vietnamese, nigerian, whatever. Who gives a ****. It makes no sense to label or stereotype someone like that. Sorry I had to vent on you. But if I were from that region, I'd be VERY VERY VERY upset at your comments!

To answer the post....I don't really think class size makes a difference. Anyway it goes, you'll learn what you will need to and will excel.
