So I've noticed a few schools have a big formal party for the medical students, faculty, etc, complete with dinner, centerpieces, silent auctions/raffles, and a dance floor. Looks like fun! Who else is excited for the chance to get to wear a cocktail dress and drink/dance with your fellow classmates?! It's been a long time since senior prom. :p

The thought of a med school prom is just sickening. We go to school to save lives, not discretely slink off to a bathroom and make babies in formal attire.

...

;)

I don't know how much baby-making is going on in the bathrooms with faculty present at the event.

Not sure why the thought of a formal event for med students is so sickening. We had one recently and it was pretty fun.

I'm about to attend a HS prom as a chaperone for my students. It'll be fun to see the differences next year if my school has a formal. :)

the only difference you're likely to see next year is the (more rampant) drunkenness

True. Most of the med students in my class drink like fish. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Listen to the last 2 comments by med students; medical school isn't this intellectual world of nerds that study all the time and dream about saving lives.

Oh yeah, and the dances are lame w/o EtOH.

it is when people start going home with classmates then wake up to regret their decisions, thus creating 4 years of intra-class awkwardness. (an all too common problem with first years it seems)

I was pretty sure the title to this thread was "Medical School Porn."

I suppose one could lead to the other.

I'm equally excited! It sounds like fun!

It'll also be fun to compare the pictures of me and the hubster. We went to my junior and senior prom together, too.
Shiz that means I'll need to lose weight.

Hopefully this time the faculty won't carry sticks to poke/separate you if you start to dance too close.

I wonder if the faculty at Loma Linda would tell you to leave room for the Holy Spirit like the chaperones at my Catholic school dances did.

The key is to try to not make babies with the married faculty. And if the faculty catch you making babies with classmates, just hope it's late enough in the evening that they won't remember.

I have a legitimate question that I'm too lazy to google:

When it's a dinner and they say dress "casual," what does this mean? Dress shirt and tie? I never f***ing know.

I wrote that response from my blackberry. Smilies don't work on the mobile page.

I walked into a windfall of drink tickets and gambling chips from a faculty member though as he was leaving though. :)

I always assume that "casual" means "business casual," i.e., shirt and slacks w/ or w/o tie for guys and nice dress or blouse or whatever for girls.

For the record, all the formals I've been to (usually at least 2/year) have been incredibly awesome. I won the "Most Likely to Swear on the Peds Ward" award at one of them.

Haha, that's awesome. Any other funny stories from the med students? I've seen pictures of one of my 80 something year old research mentors dancing with everyone's wives/dates. So adorable!

Yeah, I thought the same too, and that's what I'm going to be wearing. Better to overdress than underdress. 'Preciate the response, sir.

I thought prom in high school was kinda lame, but "prom" in college (aka sorority and frat invites) were sooooo fun... so I'm hoping med school prom can up the ante even more :D

No. Okay seriously people what is acceptable conduct here? I've been to some staff hospital parties (with doctors, nurses and techs) and people are all over each other.... Don't know how some of these people look each other in the eye during a shift. It can't be like this in medical school. No way

...
..
.

Will there be grinding and making out on the dance floor?
I'm seriously wondering. What kind of dancing are we talking here?

OOoohh what Kind of music will they play? I can imagine it now:
*Dean of medicine bobbing head* *music plays in the background: It's time to lose your mind and And let the crazy out (this plac e about to) -tonight we're taking names cause we don't mess around -This place about to- Blow uh uh uh oh oh oh *

Man I'm glad I got into med school!!! It'll be just like college

I'm glad I'm not the only one that misread the title. :p

Another survivor, I see. :D

Nah, just heard about it from some of my friends, heh. I was an engineering major at an engineering school, can't remember the last time I went to a formal/semi-formal dance. +10 lame points for me

Oh, it can't, eh? Gear up, son!

Uh...after tests, that's not too far off.

As a male, I don't know that I'm excited to wear a cocktail dress.

Med school prom is always a great time. We rent out a giant ball room at one of the newer casinos near our school for the event, usually take over a few floors of rooms too. It is funny as hell to see professors out on the dance floor just tearing it up (My biochem prof, he could really cut a rug hahahahaha).

It's one of the only time all 4 classes come together with faculty to have a good time.

also..

CASH BAR!! Whooo!

I initially thought a med school prom sounds like a bad idea and just a lotta awkwardness but this sounds fun!

I'm a horrible dancer, but this'll make up for missing my high school prom :(

No open bar?

Hopefully the story behind this is funny, not sad.

Nope, it's not. I was just a nerd...:(

I am completely with you on making up for missing my high school prom. They would not allow my then current boyfriend to go with me because he was not in the county school system and was too old. Now he will be able to come! Yay!:)

You know you're in grad school when...

you drink with faculty :hardy:

one of my friends got so drunk at an university-wide grad student party last semester that he wasn't able to get into the bar a few of us went to to shoot pool afterwards. if your med school is on the campus of a big university be on the lookout for those events. They're a lot of fun. Ours this semester is a boat cruise!
When do med schools generally have their prom? I know Baylor has a big one at the end of basic sciences, but it's only for the M2's
