medschool and makeup

Smashbox makes some cool eyeshadow palettes and kits, I love them because their brushes have to be some of the best, and come with the kit so its more affordable. ...

That's a good idea -- also, if purple really is your color (it's mine too), there are more neutral versions that are daytime appropriate. So ditch the "vibrant purple" during the day and try downplayed but similar colors like mauve or any other 'purplish' earth tones. The hint of color is all you need to draw attention to your eyes and accentuate your eye color. Done right, it looks really nice and youthful but still professional. Hope you find what you're looking for 🙂

I'm an MSIII. In my experience, makeup is completely optional in years 1 and 2. No one really cares how you look, your performance is basically just how you do on your exams. Wearing makeup is your preference.

In years 3 and 4, makeup is almost an absolute requirement. Bottom line is, you need to look good during your clerkships and that includes your physical presentation. It's funny, if this was business school, this wouldn't even be a question, you absolutely "dress to impress". And we all know that during clerkships you have to impress everyone, not just your attendings, residents, but nurses and your patients as well. Like it or not, if you can use makeup the right way it will definitely help you do that.

My personal experience with makeup is a bit different b/c I use makeup to actually look older. I look so young that in the beginning, I had a bunch of patients glance at me and was shocked that I was old enough to even be graduated from college. It's definitely a lot harder for patients to take you seriously if they think you barely pass 18. It's not hard to imagine that this makes your day unnecessarily more difficult. After I upgraded my daily concealer to a regimen of foundation, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, and blush, I've never been asked my age once. In fact, I've had nurses ask me if I was the new resident. So in my book, makeup is a huge plus.

P.S.: My makeup tip: For those who are worried about smudging or having your makeup slide by the end of the day, wear good PRIMER. You won't have to use as much product and it'll help your makeup last all day. I recommend Urban Decay Primer Potion for eye makeup and Smashbox Photofinish Primer for face (or Lancome La Base Pro if you can spare an extra buck). Especially UDPP- I swear that your eye makeup will last through a 24+ hour call no problem!!

Do whatever makes you look good (for others and for your own self-confidence).

Nothing wrong with good looking girls.

👍

There is a chick in my class that spends at least an hr or more each day on her nails, hair, and makeup yet I swear her BMI is close to 35-40. pretty damn ridiculous

I'm MS2, I don't make up during classes , but I do when I go out, white coat ceremony or meetings, lab practicals, etc. It's not necessary do make up in every morning since I have 6-8 hours lectures/day and in school pretty much all day. But our behavior professor wear 10cm high heel and deep make up, so it's free to you wear it or not.

what kind of eye makeup do u put on top of the UDPP primer, ladies? lately i've been sticking to bronzer + eyeliner combo... but it only lasts so long before getting icky looking

What kind of eye make-up does that Adam guy wear from American Idol? It seems pretty dramatic, but it looks good, especially the eye lashes.

This thread is ridiculous. Looking your best =/= you have to wear make-up. Why don't GUYS have to paint their faces in order to look their best? Apparently as women we can't attain this goal unless we wear make-up. At least that's what some of you (women included) are implying. Lame! Whatever happened to clean, pressed clothes, washed hair and face, etc?

However, as an aside... I'm a PGY-2 and have always pretty much worn make-up. I don't feel strongly about it, or that women look unprofessional without it. I'm very blonde, and I feel washed out without it. During a typical day, my routine is: brown liner, brown mascara, and eyebrow shadow (my brows are super light). Back when I was an M3, I was living in NYC, and I was used to wearing a bit more... foundation, bronzer, blush, liner, shadow, mascara, and maybe some gloss. I'm just tired of it now; hence, the minimalized routine. The rest is for special occasions.

I personally use Dior and Bobbi Brown -- they both have a really nice neutral shadow sets that are professional and day-time appropriate. That said, you can use any brand you want with it.

I actually feel like there are a good number of girls in my class that consistently look cute for class and wear makeup and stuff. Maybe y'all just need to move to Texas

neutrals... good idea. haven't used Dior or BB before, will check it out! thanks.

Whatever tickles your giblets; so long as you are clean and so long as you don't end up looking like Tammy Faye. I don't even have a problem if you are female and are from a culture that simply grooms underarm hair and doesn't shave. I had dinner with a family up in Maine once whose relative came from France. She was not only stunningly beautiful, she was clean and well-groomed. She lifted up her arm, and I saw a very well-groomed clump of hair. It bothered a few other people, but it didn't bother me at all. Doesn't mean you are a scank if you are clean and groomed. I've just been indoctrinated from my youth so, I robotically shave. Same thing with legs, even in the dead of winter. I hate the stubbies. Plus I can be a little OCDish.

If it doesn't affect others, why should anyone else care. If a fellow student isn't dolled up for class from studying her behind off, I say cut her some slack.
How many times do we females cut you guys slack when you were too busy to shave. And listen some guys can pull off that gruffish look--and others can't. Just like some girls can pull off the curly/wavy hair look and other can't. Some of us just happen to be born with that though. But I'll be darned if I'm going to spend X amount of time straightening my hair w/ a straightener each day. What the? Sorry--especially when it doesn't work for me all that well anyway.

And please don't expect your classmates to come to anatomy class in stilettos. LOL Well, even if they do, that won't last long in this particular field. I laugh when I see the doctor chick on House wearing high heels w/ her pants. So NOT realistic. Yea and models don't stay in them all day either.

My addiction is moisturizer; but I was raised where most females didn't go out totally bare-faced. The biggest thing is not looking too pale such that others think you're getting sick. God that is annoying to hear. So what? I didn't sleep, and I look like I was up barfing all night. Oh well. I showered and made it here with teeth brushed and my clothes on, so. . .

If the ole barn needs a coat of paint, paint her up. LOL
I mean some of it is like the same reason we hang pieces of art or plant flowers. Nothing wrong with making things a little more cheery.

Dang, Dior shadow? Their palettes are like $50 a pop. I like expensive makeup (Sephora knows me very well) but that's too much even for me, the makeup junkie.

🙁 My make up ALWAYS smudges! It gets on my hands and on my papers/book.- most will stay my face but it GETS EVERYWHERE.. i tried the Smashbox photofinish but it doesn't solve the smudge. I can't help but touch my face even when i try not too... I just do a LITTLE MAC concealer to cover uneveness on forhead and one cheek with a clinque mineral powder on top of it..
should I loose the concealer? work on never touching face/moving my hair? or just give up on make up all together!? Is there a better solution? I feel much more confident w/ makeup on esp. when meeting new people...but its not professional when makeup travels!! THX ladies

Hi Purple Pearl. Maybe I can help. 🙂

1. You might be putting on too much primer. Use foundation primers sparingly. If you have oily skin try Smashbox photofinish primer LIGHT not the original.
2. Use long lasting foundations like Revlon Colorstay Softflex, Rimmel Lasting Finish 16hr, Clinique Superfit, MAC face & body, or Make Up For Ever foundations (any will do). These are excellent for oily skin and are highly transfer resistant.
3. Set your foundation with a powder to make it last longer. So after you put on your liquid foundation dust your face lightly all over with either a loose or pressed powder.

if you really want to make your makeup go the distance
4. You can spray Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix after all the above.

Good luck!

Do you think maybe you are using a wrong foundation formula ? Maybe it doesn't suit your skin too well ( like it's too oily ) and that's why it smudges so much ?

Also definitely experiment with some primers - UD potion is golden for keeping eyeshadows in place and they just came out with the face primer. Maybe give that one a try too ? At least take advantage of Sephora's return policy ?

I gave up on using medium coverage foundation last quarter because no matter what primer I use, it starts looking a bit cakey by the end of the 18-19 hour day. I just use tinted moisteurizer instead.

Why b/c I have higher standards? Or a difference of opinion?

This thread is a prime example of the 2 schools of thought -- the comfort crowd (i.e. I need to be comfortable all the time b/c I'm a big baby and I need to be able to sleep at anytime during the day in my clothes) vs the I actually care about how I look.

IMO, one of the worst philosophies that plaques american fashion design is the concept of COMFORT. And in some ways, I'm not surprised. Why? B/c Americans are F-A-T. Obesity is a known epidemic. And to an extent fashion needs to cater to the masses in order to sell. So unfortunately, comfort sells. Ever notice how American designers make their clothes too big? And how European designers make their clothes "fitted?"

Call me old school, but part of being a man is showering everyday, shaving, combing your hair, smelling good and of course being a gentleman. BASIC stuff. You'd be surprised how many men can't even meet this basic standard nowadays.

Similarly, if a woman wears a touch of make-up everyday, she's not necessarily catering to the other men in her class. Maybe she just wants to look presentable. Maybe she doesn't want to look like she just rolled out of bed and into her work outfit. Maybe she expects more from herself. And maybe you should too. 🙂
but!!! NATURAL LOOK IS THE BEST ONE:laugh:😀

It's obviously a personal issue, but when I see girls in class that let themselves go really bad, it sort of says that they don't care about themselves to the world. I know that might not be the case, but it's what they project, and frankly, disregard for appearance is even often a symptom of mental illness. So this may not be such a stupid thread after all.

The only criteria for our appearance is reassuring the patients that we're competent. Someone who looks or smells like hell and doesn't bother to get up five minutes earlier for minimal grooming effort is more distracting to a patient than someone at the opposite extreme with full-on tranny makeup and hair.

Haven't gotten a chance to read this whole thread but YES, girl -- so glad you brought it up! In med. school but still find myself unwilling to give up my preventative-wrinkle skincare routine, make up, and at least 5-10 minutes on my hair. Worth it. Makes me feel so much better.

This post is almost seven years old. Nice one.

Did you search for this thread? The OP is almost certainly no longer in med school. As for my 2 cents, I will never notice someone not wearing makeup, the only thing I agree about is that I will always notice a hairy upper lip (guy or girl).
