Dr Lombardi lays down the history of the residency crisis, why the residency requirements are what they are, solutions to the shortage (not many) etc.

Basically there is no clear answer and no real advice to the unmatched but an interesting discussion by someone who has done more for the profession than most.

After listening to this, it seems clear that the 3 year residencies are here to stay. The real question is how to get 40-60 more residency programs up and running between now and the next match.

40-60? That seems a bit low... don't you agree?

Less than 60 students who currently don't have a spot are in the class of 2013. Those are the only individuals in the unmatched group who graduated in a year where there weren't enough seats for each graduate. Everyone else has watched residency programs sit empty rather than taking any of the remaining students.

There are 577 students in the class of 2014 and currently 577 "active" residency positions. Not all of those seats will actually be available come match , but not all of the students in the class of 2014 will pass boards. Another 40-60 spots is about right. But that's still a lot of seats to open...

Thanks for the clarification!

how do you know that "everyone else has watched residencies sit empty rather than take the remaining students?"

does anyone see this as a problem? isnt that illegal or something? i mean you are saying there may be enough spots for the graduates next year but in actuality no because directors wont take students/graduates? even if qualified?
