Hey I dont much about Meharry..but i do know about Howard..so let me give you my take on it..
PROS:
-Great atmosphere for class support groups
-Students are more likely collaborate with one another rather than compete
-Howard produces some of the WORLD's best surgeons (Dr. Calendar, Dr. LaFalle)
-Howard has an excellent social environment
-Howard has a new library that is really nice and a great environment to study in
-Howard's curriculum has a labtop system in which students get their notes and can write on the touch screen..AWESOME and very useful
-match list is great

CONS:
-Howard has a considerably low USMLE Step 1 pass rate ~78%
-study environments outside of the library are sub-par
-expensive to live in D.C.
-retention rate of students is not high
-from what i hear from students..faculty can be disorganized at times..

Hey I hope this helps..i interviewed at Howard..and enjoyed it alot..it was really nice and inspirational to see so many Black doctors doin big thangs..ya dig? Take care and Good Luck

How did ur interview go? I am still waiting to hear back from them. I really liked the school.

Hey,

I think my interview went really , really well. One of my interviewers told me that she wants me to go there and told another interviewer that " they have to get me". I take that as a good interview.🙂 i should be hearing back from them in like 2 weeks.

Good luck to you!!

Hey ladies!! 🙂 I got into meharry!!😀 I got the letter about 2 weeks post- interview so you all who just interviewed should be hearing soon!
Good luck!! :luck:
As for your question, I didn't apply to Howard but I have some good friends who go there and really like it. I really liked the supportive environment at Meharry as well as the small class size. I didn't apply to Howard because I was trying to save every dollar I could...haha.
Take care!!

Hey Cage how did your interview at Drew UCLA go today?

MEHARRY!!!

U can do your 3rd and 4th year electives at VANDY...need i say more.

I asked during my interview and they said u can also make arrangments, where say u want a EM residency, u can do all your EM stuff at vandy, and potentialy even get a letter from their faculty.

BTW, my vandy interviewer was a Meharry grad.

Howard produces excellent doctors. My friend's interviewer at Harvard was a Howard graduate. 🙂

Meharry

- Smaller class size. they accept 80 students and accept 20 students from the postbac program
- surrounding area is not very expensive to live in
- great students who seem to be really happy
- surrounding area can seem a little seedy
- tuition is more expensive than Howard
- they have NO new facilities
-

Howard

- large class of around 120-130
- much more urban surroundings
- tuition is lower due to subsidy from government
- new library, and newly renovated parts of certain buildings
- medical school is connected with hospital, so you can just walk over
- expensive area to live in, also not safe
- close to undergrad campus so you can take part in more social events

Over all, I would probably choose Howard over Meharry. Both are pretty unorganized, and I would say that Howard is more unorganized. But Howard just seems to have more to it...more aspects that would make me attend.

I'm preping for a nasty flaming after this question, so be nice: but am I the only one that wonder's whether or not this school is pronouced "ME-HAIRY" ?

Yep, it came via snail mail. It came certified so I had to sign for it. You should be hearing soon 🙂
Best of luck! :luck:

Meharry receives more NIH funding than Howard, right?

I am not totally sure on this one, but I always thought that Howard received more funding from NIH. I kind of vaguely remember hearing about this when I interviewed down there. Well, I'll check on this.

Howard has a very strained relationship with the NIH for reasons anyone could guess, but as an alum of the NIH, I have to conceed that racism probably plays a small role in that. OTOH, some Howard reseachers are reluctant to work with folks at the NIH because as one professor there told me, the NIH always tries to take over things. Again, this could go back to racism and/or the disoriganization that seems so prevelant at Howard.

I believe Meharry's relationship with Vandy probably gives them an "RO1" boost.

I got the email for "secondary application received" on Oct 17th and nothing else since. Goodluck to you.

how about we check to see which school actually receives more NIH funding!!!

Meharry gets more funding from NIH than Howard...and I am not surprised by this considering the fact that some of the centers at Meharry have received a considerable amount of national acclaim.

I personally think Meharry takes the cake easily... in the next couple of posts I will share what I have found.

4. Howard University*___________
First Year Student Budget: $18,498 (not including housing, transportation, food, books, etc.)…assuming that these expenses are comparable to GWU, here is the total: $18,498 + $14,625 + $700 + $915 + $2,210 = $36,948 Score: 3
Financial Aid: % students receiving aid: 93%, 49% receiving grants and scholarships, Max amt. of aid available (average*): comparable to most other med schools (whatever that means), Average Student Debt: $114,016, Average amount per scholarship/grant: $8,948 Score: 5
Curriculum/etc…: Traditional basic science lecture (not-organ based…..booooooo), no PBL integration (booooo), early patient contact (yay), research integration option beginning in 3rd or 4th year, national and international clinical electives (4th year), can enroll in one elective per semester as a MS-1 (awesome), typical clerkships with more emphasis on primary care, 4th year flexibility (pretty much standard at all universities, 3 interval grading system (Honors/Pass/Fail or equivalent) for all four years…No Clinical Skills Center Score: 9
#Affiliated Hospitals/Facilites: 8 hospitals, no major research facilities (all small) Score: 7.75
Selection Factors: Rolling, No average GPA or MCAT listed (but I am aware that it is much lower than most other med schools), Overall Median GPA: 3.37, Science Median GPA: 3.22, Median MCAT: 25O (Ranges – V: 3 – 12, P: 5 – 14, B: 6 – 13, writing: K – S), no state preference, HBCU (enough said), 4,131 applicants for approx 430 interview slots Score: 8++++
Diversity: 76% URM…18% other minority, 6% non-minority….this is great, but I would still like a few non-minorities to kind of further diversify the environment Score: 15++++++++++
Dual Degree Options: MD/MS, MD/PhD Score: 2.5
Student Support Services: One new biomed library, no need for diversity affairs support, directed study summer program, other tutoring resources within student academic support services, no supporting virtual clinical resources, but there is a virtual online resource center and a learning resource center (medpage and stuff like that) several audio files of lectures, Blackboard (ugh!!!!!!!) Score: 3.55
Housing: On-campus housing, non-affiliated off campus housing around Howard Score: 3.5
Location: Da Hood….not too safe at night!!!!!! Makes it not ideal to even think about living off campus regardless if have own transportation…patient pop not very diverse….but probably see more diverse array of diseases, it is still DC though Score: 3.75 b/c safety is an issue
Class Size: approx. 120 (116 entered in 2005), at least 28% of interviewees accepted Score: 3.5
Residency Match List: 35% entering primary care residencies, 65% entering specialty residencies….wow surprised by this one
Volunteer/Research Opportunities: Plenty of volunteer opportunities, limited research opportunities (but they do definitely exist…lol), opportunities to participate in research opps. at NIH main campus in Bethesda, MD….Howard also has its own minority research congress (see website for full details), approx $18 in NIH funding (94th), over $15.5 million in NIH research grants Score: 6.75
Miscellaneous: Horrible website (they don't divulge too much information), my people I love you (lol), have some ties there, nuff said Score: 2.00

Total Score: NO FULL SCORE ASSIGNED UNTIL ALL SCHOOLS COMPLETED…HELPS PREVENT ANY POSSIBLE INLETS FOR BIAS

the funding stats have to be updated since this reflects my research from this past summer before the 2005 funding was released

17. Meharry*___________
First Year Student Budget: approximately (based on my friends budget) $45,000 Score: 2.25
Financial Aid/etc…: University loans…low interest rate, but constrained by small endowment, of course all of the govt loans/grants available (outside university source…technically). Scholarships: One primary merit scholarship (full tuition…nice)…and one need based scholarship. % Enrolled students receiving financial aid: 101% (if that is possible…ummmm…maybe that reflects a change in the number of people receiving to aid), Average amount per scholarship/grant: $7,352…Average 2005 graduate indebtedness: $128,484 Score: 4.5
Curriculum/etc…: Organ based curriculum: very secretive school (they don’t even include access to information on their curriculum…how lame…so what I write is based on what is found in the MSAR). Integrated organ based curriculum organized into modules that include basic, clinical, and social sciences. Curriculum highlights health disparities and minority health (nice). PBL is partially integrated in 2nd year, case-based learning, some small group sessions. Students are required to take monthly state exams in addition to exams for classes (this might stem from administration feeling as if Meharry med students have a lot to prove and must demonstrate their academic abilities…believe me when I say that there is a significant stigma within society about HBCU med schools). Typical Clerkships: Family Medicine, Psychiatry, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery…plenty of clinical rotation electives that you can begin as early as first year (some research can be applied towards clerkship credit). International rotations are available but very limited. Early patient contact (through ambulatory rotations, rotations in rural or underserved areas). Grading System: 4 interval grading scale (Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail or equivalent. No clinical aids made to enhance student learning, pretty straight forward traditional Score: 11
#Affiliated Hospitals/Facilities: 7 plus several community clinics with which Meharry maintains close affiliation
Selection Factors: Private, Rolling admissions, strongly consider minorities (it is a HBCU after all…lol), Avg. GPA: Not listed, Median Overall GPA: 3.25, Median Science GPA: 3.07, Avg. MCAT: Not listed, Median MCAT: 23O (Ranges: V: 4 – 13,P: 5 – 13, B: 5 – 12, writing: K – T), 3175 applications for 499 interview slots Score: 8+++++++++
Diversity: 86% URM, 5% other minority, 9% non-minority Score: 15+++++++++++++++++++++
Dual Degree Options: MD/PhD Score: 1.25
Student Support: My friend says that the school organization and the closeness of everyone make the environment feel family like. There are a few student organizations but not many. A couple of volunteer organizations, Student counseling, career services, health science library (kind of old…needs a makeover), Social Networking seminars, doctor-student mentoring, no extra learning aids
Score: 4.5
Housing: Meharry Towers (on campus), off campus apartments surrounding the university (but in bad bad neighborhood)
Score: 4
Location: Nashville (home of country), hot hot hot, good food though, access to diverse patient population, southern charm…hahahaha, not so safe area of Nashville Score: 3.75
Class Size: 85 so 17% of interviewees matriculate (much much higher % is accepted) Score: -1
Residency Match List: 59% of past graduates entered primary care residency programs, 41% entered other residency programs
Volunteer/Research Opportunities: This school is very underserved community oriented and thus has several community health initiatives to address issues such as Sickle Cell Anemia, Obesity, as well as other initiatives created jointly by Meharry and Vanderbilt, SNMA and two other organizations on campus are primarily responsible for volunteer services. Research: 7 seven primary research facilities/institutes…major research focuses on cancer, HIV/AIDS, women’s health, and health disparities, year long research opportunities (but relatively limited in funding). Total NIH funding: $26,181,050 (rank 85th), Total NIH research funding (research grants): $21,356,870…hahaha they get more funding than a lot of non-stigmatized schools Score: 9.5
Miscellaneous: All I need say is that it was the first HBCU med school in the country…very rich history…respect (deserves more than it receives from the society and the medical community), horrible website (is being built up though) Score: 3

Total Score: NO FULL SCORE ASSIGNED UNTIL ALL SCHOOLS COMPLETED…HELPS PREVENT ANY POSSIBLE INLETS FOR BIAS
