Hey I dont much about Meharry..but i do know about Howard..so let me give you my take on it..
PROS:
-Great atmosphere for class support groups
-Students are more likely collaborate with one another rather than compete
-Howard produces some of the WORLD's best surgeons (Dr. Calendar, Dr. LaFalle)
-Howard has an excellent social environment
-Howard has a new library that is really nice and a great environment to study in
-Howard's curriculum has a labtop system in which students get their notes and can write on the touch screen..AWESOME and very useful
-match list is great
CONS:
-Howard has a considerably low USMLE Step 1 pass rate ~78%
-study environments outside of the library are sub-par
-expensive to live in D.C.
-retention rate of students is not high
-from what i hear from students..faculty can be disorganized at times..

Hey,
I think my interview went really , really well. One of my interviewers told me that she wants me to go there and told another interviewer that " they have to get me". I take that as a good interview.🙂 i should be hearing back from them in like 2 weeks.

As for your question, I didn't apply to Howard but I have some good friends who go there and really like it. I really liked the supportive environment at Meharry as well as the small class size. I didn't apply to Howard because I was trying to save every dollar I could...haha.

MEHARRY!!!
U can do your 3rd and 4th year electives at VANDY...need i say more.
I asked during my interview and they said u can also make arrangments, where say u want a EM residency, u can do all your EM stuff at vandy, and potentialy even get a letter from their faculty.
BTW, my vandy interviewer was a Meharry grad.

- Smaller class size. they accept 80 students and accept 20 students from the postbac program
- surrounding area is not very expensive to live in
- great students who seem to be really happy
- surrounding area can seem a little seedy
- tuition is more expensive than Howard
- they have NO new facilities

- much more urban surroundings

Over all, I would probably choose Howard over Meharry. Both are pretty unorganized, and I would say that Howard is more unorganized. But Howard just seems to have more to it...more aspects that would make me attend.

Lol, I think that is exactly how it is pronounced, but the name comes from the Meharry brothers who founded the schools http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,772634,00.html/url]. I tend to pronounce it "Ma-harry"

I am not totally sure on this one, but I always thought that Howard received more funding from NIH. I kind of vaguely remember hearing about this when I interviewed down there. Well, I'll check on this.

Howard has a very strained relationship with the NIH for reasons anyone could guess, but as an alum of the NIH, I have to conceed that racism probably plays a small role in that. OTOH, some Howard reseachers are reluctant to work with folks at the NIH because as one professor there told me, the NIH always tries to take over things. Again, this could go back to racism and/or the disoriganization that seems so prevelant at Howard.

how about we check to see which school actually receives more NIH funding!!!
Meharry gets more funding from NIH than Howard...and I am not surprised by this considering the fact that some of the centers at Meharry have received a considerable amount of national acclaim.
I personally think Meharry takes the cake easily... in the next couple of posts I will share what I have found.
