Hey SDN,

I will be taking Metabolic Biochem next quarter, does anyone have any advice on ways I should study for this course (flashcards? just reading the book?..etc) Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you🙂

I took a class called advanced metabolism. I am assuming it is the same, but depending on how the instructor teaches the course. My course was tested with 100 multi choice and and then 50 points worth of essay/drawing cycles etc. Is he going to require you to reproduce all the metabolic pathways/cycles/intermediates etc. If so then I would get a dry erase board and wear it out. If it is all multi choice, then I would read and know in detail what he covers. Take a voice recorder if you are worried about missing detail. It is a very detailed class, but probably one of the best I have had! Good Luck to you.

This class requires a lot of memorization! You will need to know many structures and pathways, so I would take blank sheets of paper and draw them both out until you have them down.

It is also very important to understand how everything ties together. Understand what happens when insulin and glucagon are released, and how that affects PKA, PKB, beta-oxidation, FA synthesis, glycogen synthesis, glycogenolysis, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, etc... I think bringing the big picture together was the most helpful to me in understanding metabolic biochem.

Good luck. It's a lot of studying, but the material is quite interesting since it relates to our metabolism/digestion.

Sweet, thanks a lot guys! I will take that and run with it🙂

Great course to take. You'll appreciate having previously seen the material when it makes its reappearance in DS.

I personally learned it through simplifying the mechanisms to their basics, and then tried to mentally tie in how the different products of the mechanisms went together. Study hard and you'll get much out of it.
