Is taking a microbiology class before taking the DAT crucial, or is there enough information in DAT prep. books/courses to enlighten you of enough microbiology to do well on those questions.

I am currently debating whether or not to overwhelm myself with courses so that I could get in that microbio class next semester in preparation for the DAT.

Thankyou

I find that material covered in a Micro class is way more than is needed for the DAT.

I am currently taking Micro, FYI.

in terms of molecular biology, including microbiology, the DAT covers barely any

i never took microbio and did fine without it.

Not necessary, but any upper level bio class will be helpful.

I've taken the DAT twice and I am just about to finish my micro class. Here are the things that it clarified for me (this is different for everyone):

Gram positive vs. Gram negative bacteria
Bacteria in general, binary fission, budding, etc.
Plasmids, vectors, lac operon, prions, things like that.
Experimental areas like recombinant
--not sure how much these things are covered on the Bio portion anyways...maybe like one or two of the "harder" questions. Not incredibly worth it in my opinion.

It's just a class that is the mother of all bio classes in my opinion. It would seriously help you understand Bio as a whole. But, it will cover so much more than the basics, that you might just be better off studying Bio I and II and knowing that like the back of your hand.

Those are great topics to suggest! Even without microbio, molecular bio/biochem covers a lot of that stuff too in enough detail to do well on the DAT

I agree, while taking more science classes are always helpful, DAT science covers material at a very superficial level, so wiki is more than enough 🙂.

i took it immediately before i took the DAT, and though not necessary, it was definitely useful as it consolidated info i had learned in previous Biol classes (in fact, it was my highest score on my DAT as far as percentiles go).

okay thankyou guys

Dan? Is that you? lol

If it is i already told you yea it helps....

If its not who i think it is 😳 yea i believe it helps. I learned several things in my microbio course that i saw on my DAT, also stuff i didnt have a great grasp on when prepping. If you have to take it sooner or later, its better sooner since Bio is the most wide-ranged topic on the DAT.

Im sure you will get in... As for me I hope so too! Western really impressed me... *cross fingers*

Sorry for hijacking the thread OP..

I think Micro will help solidify ideas prior to the DAT, though nothing you can't learn from a Biology textbook will be on the DAT

My vote is yes! I remember at least one questions where I stopped and said "Thank god I took Micro"

I think the best class to take to help you for the DAT is mammalion physiology, saved me a lot of time for the bio section on the DAT.

Nah, you should do fine without Micro. You forget a massive amount of that information anyways.
