Most people seem to go with Micro made ridiculously simple, but I was wondering what other people thought about levinson vs. lange and appleton. Basically I'm looking for a really good source for micro that is somewhat analogous to Costanzo's physiology.

I have not been using CMMR (I read through it once before coming to med school). BRS Micro is a waste of time IMO.

I like Deja Reviews, Micro Recall, FA section on micro, HY Immuno, Micro and Immuno for the Boards and Wards. Kaplan's section on this is also fine. Micro Pre-test is challenging. I have the Lange Micro and it is amazingly dense and not my first choice. Which one did Levinson write?

Levinson wrote Medical Micro and Immunology. I think that it's 580 pages long. I'm on a leave of absence and had some extra time on my hands so I was going to review immuno and start to do some micro, so I started flipping through Lange and that book just flipped me out. You're right, it just seemed so dense; I was wondering if Levinson was any easier to plow through.

Did anyone else find that certain sections of HY immuno are not that easy to get through? I did really well in immuno in med school, but certain sentences had me going, huh?

I used Levinson's (Lange) medical micro and immuno and would HIGHLY recommend it. It is a big book but manageable and very readable. For micro, you only need to read the stuff on general microbiology and skip all the chapters on actual bugs--just look at the summaries at the end for specific bugs, they're great. I looked at micro MRS and thought that it was okay for some mnemonics, but I wouldn't recommend it for board study if that's what you're doing. The immunology section in Levinson is the best written immunology section that I've found--I also tried using HY immunology but it confused me even after reading Levinson, and I would recommend throwing HY immunology out.

I used Lange's micro & immuno review for the boards as my primary text for our micro & immuno course and did quite well in it (I never took either of those courses before medical school). One of the things I've liked about it is that it has >800 questions, including many as an additional USMLE-style test for board prep. There's an appendix that serves as a rapid-review for all the medically-relevant bugs at the end, as well as a list of cases to help with integration. I recommend it if you're either a) using it along with your class through the semester / year or b) looking for lotsa questions.

The Lange I have is Jawetz's Medical Microbiology. It is 800+ pages and quite dense. Great for class but maybe not so much for board review.
