Microcards and FA enough to answer all micro questions on step1?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't taken the Boards yet, but Microcards + FA is my plan, too. One thing that I've done during my Micro. class is to add some notes to the Microcards that the cards may have left out or things that my professors seemed to stress in class. I don't like to use too many resources, so I think using FA and then looking through the cards when I'm tired of reading a book will be a good routine for studying Microbiology.

P.S. Of course, I'm sure we all plan to do questions, too. 🙂

Microcards and FA is MORE than enough... I studied both these and nailed all of the approximately 5-10 questions I had on Micro on Step 1. Point being, don't waste too much time on learning which viruses are isocahedral, or that Molluscum is caused by a Pox virus. The few questions I did have were clinical presentations (Lyme Disease and herpes).

That's so much work for 10 questions. 🙁

bumping an old thread but im wondering if it's worth it to get CMMRS if I have microcards+FA?
I'm planning to get microcards cause the second year recommend it to us and wondering if microcards+FA is enough or should I add cmmrs..cause the CMMRS book is pretty thick and I dont know if i have time to read all that and if it's high yield.

I used FA + CMMRS charts. FA is probably more than enough. I just liked the organization of CMMRS more.

FA alone is probably enough

I used FA and added stuff from UW. A lot of my micro questions seemed to either be 1) diagnosis then 2)prescribe the right antimicrobial or knowing the principles - obligate aerobe, intracellular etc. Both things covered pretty well in FA. Bought the flash cards but didnt use them during my dedicated month of studying, only during the yr sparingly

I really liked the micro cards cause of the cases they had. I annotated directly on to them rather than FA. I didn't care so much for the bacteria / virus specific portions of FA, though I found the algorithms, culture reqs, staining, etc helpful. CMMRS for things here and there.

But yeah, FA and practice questions should cover everything. I don't think you should feel you have to use another source to cover something, but that doesn't mean another source may not work better for you in some regard.

yes FA is very good
know your basic ones real good..like the most common cause organisms for certain disease...they are more heavily tested than obscure ones
ohh and know strep and all its groups and characteristics real well..eg optochin senstiive.bile sensitive, bacitracin resistance etc

i read kaplan micro..total overkill
FA should be good if you know it well

Is micro from FA+goljan RR(they have some micro charts in almost every chapter) enough?
thanks

I used microcards and really liked them. My first pass through the micro chapter, I annotated/highlight stuff from FA onto the cards (which honestly wasn't much - the cards were spot on!). My second run through, I only used the cards and did the mini-cases on the front.

I personally hated CMMRS. It was just way to wordy and gimmicky for me. That said, I know a lot of my classmates liked it. You'd be fine with either, it's just personal preference.

Fa + microcards + CMMRS = golden.

FA + microcards or CMMRS = also very very good.

i had at least 5 of very 'out there' bugs which were mentioned in FA, but the level of detail in FA wasn't enough to recognize the clinical presentation. microcards are cash money in terms of presentation, pathogenosis, and tx. mnemonics in CMMRS are priceless. goljan RR micro tables are also good for review within that system, but i personally loathe tables.... its super interesting material, so if you have the time, do it all.

At least 10% of question on my test were micro related; there were a few antibiotic and antifungal Qs that req. you to ID the bug and pick the best treatment. I mainly used microcards and pharmcards. I didn't like FA's brief description of things.
