Do any programs offer a mid-year start (ie. Dec/Jan) either due to attrition from the program or increased need?
Is this a rarity or a common occurence?

Its a rarity but it does happen. Our program had a vacancy in the middle of the year due to an unfortunate situation.

Vacancies are a rarity, but there are programs that specifically plan to start residents at other times of year than July 1. You can find out which on Freida, the percentage of programs offering this option varies by specialty but is surprisingly high (it was a surprise to me anyway) 🙂
