Does anyone have any impressions/experiences about the following gas programs:

1. Indiana University
2. Univ. of Mich.
3. Northwestern Univ.
4. Wright State Univ.
5. Michigan State Univ.
6. U of Chicago

I would really like to go to Indiana Univ. for geographic reasons. My class rank is 34/244, Psi Sigma Alpha (DO Honors -Academic), Sigma Sigma Phi (DO Honors -Service), Research, USMLE I 230/93, COMLEX I 629/93rd%ile, 4-year DO/MBA Dual Degree Program. Previous MS degree. Any thoughts on my chances for these programs?

Thank you!

indiana has stoelting, and i believe, even mallampati...
2 big names in gas
northwestern is decent...
same with uchig
and Umich
dont know MSU's rep
wright state.. never heard of a med school there... so i cant opine on this one

Just FYI, Dr. Mallampati is practicing in Boston at BWH. As for midwest programs I can only speak to University of Michigan. The hospital is a good one with a strong surgical program and volume. I think the residency would provide you with plenty of sick patients and cases. Possible weak points might be the ICU experience which as a 2-3 years ago was limited to the thoracic ICU. Ann Arbor is a nice town. Safe but relatively expensive for the midwest. As for the midwest in general, Univ. of Chicago is probably considered the strongest from an "academic" standpoint. For what its worth, my 2 cents.

MSU has only a DO program, first class started last year, so it's very new.
That's all I know

SixteenStones,

Fellow KCOM grad & classmate (2003) Matthew Hamilton is at the Univ of Indiana doing gas. Maybe you should drop him an e-mail & ask him to give you the inside poop? Last he & I chatted, pre-match, IU was his first choice & he was very charged about the prospect of going there. He's a good guy & very friendly; so contacting him should not be a problem. You can always give his KCOM/ATSU e-mail a go & if that does not fly, try contacting him via the Alumni Affairs office.
