Hey I am sure this has been asked a million times, but I am trying to decide between CCP and CPG, and I cant make a decision! I am from Cali so warm weather appeals to me, but I might like to take a chance in Chicago, since it is a great city! Can anyone tell me about stats at the schools, ie- are there young people to hang with, (since im a single young gal) are the cirricula different? what are the chances of getting into the accelerated program at CCP? Is one school more unified in its student body? Better housing, etc? sorry for all the questions, but i am really struggling! (hey and if anyone has advice over UIC as well...) Oh and cost makes no difference since i am out of state everywhere!!

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

MWU-CPG is the way to go! ...do a search; there have been numerous threads regarding the school in the past few months.

If warm weather appeals to you, I have to warn you that Chicago has some brutal winters. CCP is about 30-40 minutes away from the city..the area that the school is in is not really in the hustle and bustle type setting that's typical of chicago. If location is a big thing for you, UIC is basically right in downtown chicago. (However, the curricula at UIC and MWU are different). I live closer to UIC, was accepted to both, but chose MWU..had my reasons. Don't know much about the avg age at UIC, but I know at MWU, the avg age is 26 (but i think that's for the entire school, not just pharm). The accelerated program at CCP can supposedly get competetive..depends on the number of ppl who actually want a spot in your class. They only offer the top 50 students a spot after I believe your PS1 year. I dont know much about housing at both schools, so I can't help you there. I hope all the rest of the info helps though. =)

CPG by far. First off, the tuition is the cheapest. CCP for some reason charges out of state tuition -$21795, UIC out-state tuition - $21034, and CPG tuition is same in-state/out-state - $19787. Not a huge difference, but some.

CPG also because nice weather and the ability to graduate in 3 years, or actually 2 years and 9 months. From what CCP said at there so called interview, everyone with a gpa over 2.5 after there first year that applies for the early graduation position will be eligible. Then ~50 people will be picked by a lottery system. Its not the top 50 students, but it used to be. That being said, why not just be assured the 3 year grad with CPG. Not to mention it is closer to your family in LA.

As far as schools go, CPG admits much less students than CCP. From the research I have done, CPG is also more student based and UIC is more research based. CPG professors have an open door policy and are always willing to help (not saying it is/isn't that way at other two).

Housing at CCP dorms, if I remember correctly, do not have air conditioning.

Good luck.

I'm not sure where you got your info, but tuition for the 05/06 school year at CPG is $28,229, regardless of state residency. I wish it was that cheap! 😛

CCP does have AC in some dorms. There are 2 types of dorms - the traditional halls (no AC 🙁 ) and the Redwood buildings (newer and AC 🙂 ). I really like Chicago, there are many, many opportunities for things to do, bith socially and professionally. THere are a great number of rotation sites around here that may not be open to a smaller town. Chicago has a great night life too 🙂 Just my two cents (since no one is really defending CHicago). But, if you have never been thru a Midwest winter, that is somehting to consider. Try to visit in Jan or Feb to see how you like it, it's quite the adjustment 🙂

My fault . . . that was 04/05 tuition costs. Gotta hate inflation!!!

Seems like cirricula and stuff is about the same for both schools. So what is Downers Grove like? I drove around there for a bit, and had lunch on that main street with all the shops (ie the GIANT GRILL) is its a cool place to live for a young person. Basically I figure I'll be challenged anywhere I go, but having a little fun and meeting people my own age is kind of important, I don't wanna be stuck in old people town. Also, for both schools, do the different programs at each school mingle together, or is it different schedules, different living situations? Also, how many total people are at each school?

Thanks for answering my random questions, seems like i can figure out the academics but the other stuff no one is talking about! THANKS!!!

I dont really know how it's like at CPG..didnt apply there, but I know at CCP, you have some classes with the osteopathic med students (a couple or so)..not sure about UIC. UIC accepted 160 students for the incoming pharm class..total students..A LOT bc remember, it's also an undergrad institution. CCP accepts ~200 pharm students. MWU is obviously a smaller school than UIC (not sure about exact numbers though), but it's also newer. And yes, Chicago has a great night life. 🙂

As far as the living situation is concerned, at CCP, I have no clue whether students from different programs are separated into separate housing units, however, I highly doubt it..seems like everything is on a first come first serve basis.

From what I remember, CCP stopped the lottery system. Admission to the AGO program is based on whoever has the highest GPA by the end of the 1st year. According to the dean, the majority of the students who fit this criterion tended to do better than those who were selected by lottery..the main reason why the whole selection process changed.

i had my interview at CCP in march, and i think i remember the dean saying that you had to be in the top "insert smaller number here" percent before you could apply for the accelerated program and that you had to apply and compete for it. i'm not quite sure how this is supposed to work, but i'm sure they'll explain it in more detail once classes start. 😀 can't wait for classes to begin! chicago seems like a fun city... i'm moving from dallas, texas so it will definatly be an adjustment. anyway, hope everyone's doing well!

Hey i am from cali too like you and was in the same situation as you, sorta. I am AGO graduating this sept. If I were you go to CPG, arizona. Chicago is a nice city to visit but not to live. the suburbs, downers grove. is boring as hell. its the boonies unlike socal suburbs. the Winter is the worse you will ever exp. the first year might be cool but after that it sux. 6 months out of the year its COLD and you will not see sunlight! 4 months it thunderstorms or very humid. you get about 2 months of good "cali" like weather. Chicago is a nice city with lots of things to do.. but still it does not compare to LA and socal where there are waaaay more things to do. One thing about Chicago it does have a nice skyline and downtown. You can see that with a 1 wk visit.

In addition you will pay more in tuition at CCP than CPG. even if you go AGO at CCP, you still have to pay 4 years of tuition at around 23,000/year. At CPG, you pay around 28,000/year for 3 years. plus you graduate 4 months earlier at CPG than CCP AGO. I tried to transfer to CPG after my first year at CCP but the dean wouldn't let me

if you have any more questions msg me.

Wow, I can tell you have never really been to Downers Grove. The suburb or Downers and Naperville have great social scene (esp Naperville which is about 15 min from DG). THere are many, many bars and restaurants in the area. PLenty to do and many single people around. Downtown is even better. You act like CHicago is a small town, it's just below LA and NY in population. Yeah, the winter may suck, but you do actually have all 4 seasons here which is nice.
You do have some classes with the PAs, the DOs and others. And, in the dorms you are not segregated by program. Your suitemate maybe a DO, a PA, a PT, etc. It's nice, you get to know a lot of people that way.
Hope this helps 🙂

I'm sorry....I did not want this to turn into a pissing match between the CPG people and the CCP people. If anyone takes offense to my message, I am sorry, I just get a little mad when I hear people discredit the town, when they obviously have not been there, and that it is not LA. But, like it was said before, the programs are very similar, it just depends on if you want to move away from teh LA area and try something new or stay close to there, it's all up to you . (and I promise there is a great social scene around here, and DG is not some sleepy little suburb in the boonies, although there are many suburbs like that around here 🙂 ).

hey did you go to ucla?? i noticed the "bruin" i'm from UCLA if you are... 2002....
