Midwestern, Glendale 2012 class

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Very interesting. When I went, it was mostly men and I guess from then on it's mostly women.

I'm sure all of you did great! I know waiting for the news sucks🙁
Hang in there all.
Thanks. It does suck, but if we get the calls in the next week or so it will have been worth it.
Looks like their final mix is slightly more female than male, at least based on the stats they showed us.

Hey, are you umm... vertically challenged ? I think I know who you are! Did you have lunch with a table of other pharmacy candidate ladies, right near the cashiers stand ?

LOL! Yes and yeah I was eating lunch with the ladies. I remember a few of the ladies talking about their iphones during lunch.

I never got a call from Midwestern 😡

I got off the plane from MCPHS and hackerpanda blasted my phone to tell me to check my portal and I found out. Had to call them two days later to make sure and asked questions about the missing per requisite. I would just follow the portal and not wait for the call lol

Yes, that's me! So I got to meet three fellow SDN peeps. 🙂

I was there as well. Our interview group had a blast in the interview room and the panel all laughed with us as well. Although the group next door said their panelists were very rigid and intimidating. Our group rocked the interview, I thought.

The questions were all really generic:

1. Why pharmacy?
2. Qualities a pharmacist should have?
3. A time you went above and beyond the call of duty and how that skill will help you in the future with pharmacy?
4. Role model?
5. Sudden life event that happened and how did you adapt to it?
6. Then they asked an individual questions relating to question 5.

That was it! We all got 6 questions and they rotated who when first (3 interviewers at the same time). In my particular answer to number 5, the one lady actually commented that it made an impression on her. I did get a little emotional because it was very personal to me, but it was the last thing said (minus our questions) in the interview. 🙂

During the interview you all gather in a room and then the Dean comes in and gives a short presentation. Then the first group interviews while the other groups tour. And they flop. So, you pretty much sit around waiting to interview and chatting with the other applicants. Then you eat lunch and go home. They said it would last time 2:30, but we left at 11:30 (if you didn't eat lunch).

Just a side note: The interview room is small & VERY "crowded". You sit close to everyone and it does not get uncomfortable, but warm when your nerves are up. So, don't forget personal hygeine. LOL

No, you really came off well. Mike did fine as well, but I did feel sorry for his poor tummy. It rumbled loudly the whole interview. I don't think it was a problem, per se, but I am guessing it made him even more nervous.
Thanks for the confidence, but I am not so sure.
Maybe we will all get calls Monday :xf::xf::xf:

Oh, poor guy! I didn't even notice the rumbling. I thought he delivered pretty well, and if he was able to deliver like that with a rumbling tummy, then :thumb up:!

I honestly thought both of you did really well. I'm sure you two will get good news. 🙂

LOL! Yes and yeah I was eating lunch with the ladies. I remember a few of the ladies talking about their iphones during lunch.
Yep, thats the table. Now I know who you are.
I was one of the other "non-iphone" folks.

Nice recap of the day. Our group was really nice and friendly too.

The first time I read this I thought you meant the first group flops ...

I don't think we got asked question 5 in my group. All others were spot on.

Eh, I would be ok with that as well- just as long as I found out quickly. I never got an email inviting me to interview, it was just in my portal when I checked, so I jumped on it.
But I am being impatient. I need to stop that and relax.:bang:

Yeah it seems Midwestern is inconsistent with their communication with different students.

I remember getting an email inviting me to interview, with a link to the MWU Portal.

As for acceptance, they never called or emailed me. But I checked the MWU portal because that's how SDN people who got accepted before me said they found out. But for the instant acceptances, they got the phone calls (for the first 2 interview batches on Setp 29 and 30, not sure about the instant acceptances for the later October dates).

I had to call them myself to confirm the acceptance news I saw on the MWU portal. Then 2 weeks later I got an official letter of acceptance.

So I would recommend checking the MWU portal frequently and then wait for the letter in the mail. 👍

I do wonder if this inconsistency/lack of response from admissions will translate into faculty not interacting with students.

Little contradictory from what they presented to us how faculty-student interact.

You have to remember that the admissions department is not the same as the faculty. I have worked with Midwestern faculty quit a bit in a previous job and they are some of the most reliable people I have ever worked with! They remember everything about the students, down to the schedule of classes. The one reason I chose to apply to Midwestern was their diligence to the students and their success.

Thanks for providing that insight, i feel so much better now.

Anybody from Friday's (or today's) interview accepted yet?

I wish 😀
Honestly I'll be happy with a waitlist. It's early so there's still a good chance of being pulled from it

In case it might help someone I figured I'd share that there was one question that they asked us that I never saw on the feedback. I don't remember the exact wording but it was something like:

What was one time you had a conflict with another health care professional and how did you handle it?

I take your question and raise you with a

"If you are the head of FDA, what issues or concerns will you address"

lol

Yeah I think I saw that on the feedback forum. I'm glad they didn't ask me that cuz I would've just had to pull somethin out of nowhere and it probably would've been a bad answer

Nothing here either.
I am thinking maybe they just meet on Fridays, and the insta-admittees won't hear until then.
I am the queen of rationalization !

Their admissions committee meet on Thursday's, that's what I got as a response when I bugged them about it.

This is nice to hear. Thanks Starcake.
Did you hear anything yet ?

Thursday after interviews, how's that? Lol

After you guys hear back, you'll feel that all the worries were silly. I felt that way. Everyone got super nervous because tsukiyo and hackerpanda got instantized.

May i ask rest of you a personal question, hope you don't mind. If you're a bit older and married, how do you guys do it? Pharmacy school studying and family must be tough.

Well, I am old and married.
We also have two kids, but luckily they are not young enough to need tons of constant care.
In a word ? SUCKS !
I am kind of lucky, because I put my husband though pharmacy school first, so he is VERY sympathetic to the time demands. He really wants me to suceed, so he tries to be very supportive.
Still, the house is wretchedly dirty. And I only work 2 days a week. Between kids, school, work and my elderly parents, I am pretty tapped out.
Scheduling study time helps keep it from getting lost in the shuffle.

abeautyaddict got an instant acceptance too among the SDN'ers for the Sept 30 interviews. 👍 👍

Honestly, I was amazed at how fast MWU responded for interviews and decisions. I was also pretty surprised when I didn't receive a call or any such notification as to whether a decision had been made. Luckily I spoke to someone at an interview in Albany (we've interviewed together twice) and he told me to check the portal. All in all as an out of state student I still know very little about the university. This was one of my first choice schools because of its 3 year accelerated program. Luckily I got accepted. I also got accepted to the MCPHS-Worcester campus university within a few days of interviewing. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted, good luck to those still waiting to find out and also to those in the future applying to the university.

Personally, I become a nervous wreck a few hours prior to interviews and these situations to begin with but the MWU faculty was extremely down to earth. I was interviewed by 2 men and a woman along with two fellow interviewees. Definitely didn't expect to participate in a group interview but I guess you can't really go through life without a couple of curveballs haha. I interviewed on September 29th and the day was much shorter than expected. I thought I was early but when I arrived, everyone but 2 people had arrived: so much for being punctual.

Hope everyone has a great experience and maybe I'll see everybody in June!

No problem. I have not heard anything yet. But, they did say it could take up to 3 weeks, so I am just trying to relax. 😳

Well, I am only 27, but I have 4 kids (all 6 and under) and I work full-time, while taking 8 credits! Pretty much it does SUCK! It is all about time management. My husband is a stay-at-home dad and does really well with taking care of the household and kids. I think I am home for 1-2 hours a day, minus sleeping.....so pretty much my kids only see me on Sunday and most of Saturday. However, I imagine when I get into pharmacy school I will be home more because I won't have to work. 🙂 I actually think I have better time management married and with kids then I did single and always looking for the next activity or date to go on. Keeps me focused.

Yeah, I know. Just impatient and nervous. Gotta relax.

And I think you are right about the focus. I didn't work at all last year and my study skills SUCKED. I have been working 2 8-12 hr days a week this semester and it has really helped me to not push off studying til "later".

Congrats to you HarshalS. Sounds like you have a decision to make!
I hope we will see you in June.

So much pressure going in against other students with awesome time managing skills....

Oh wait we work together, phew.

ACCEPTED!!!! Check your portals!! I just logged on knowing that it would be pointless, but there it is! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

I got in too! Congrats to the fellow applicants who got accepted!

ETA: I just got a call from the admissions office! I wasn't as excited as I should have been because I had already found out from the portal lol.

I got the call about an hour ago too. Same here...she probably could tell that I already knew.

Congrats Ladies !
Nothing in my portal yet.
I did get an email from the financial aid office, so I was hopeful even though it said if/when you are acceppted. But nothing.
Good on you two. Hopefully I will hear something in the next couple of weeks.

I'm sure you'll get in! Hang in there! :hello:

So can someone add me on the FB page? 🙂 Or do I just "like" it? No idea...

😕
Thanks guys. Just impatient and I would rather not get waitlisted again.

Of course, there are worse alternatives...:scared:

I'm freaking out. My friend who interviewed on monday got accepted tuesday but I have not heard anything and I interviewed on friday.

Reviewing applicants who interviewed later first has been a trend for MWU though.

Don't worry guys, news will come! Keep your chins up

I suspect there is a "slam dunk" pile they go through right after the interviews, then they go through all the rest at their next meeting alphabetically. mitsubishi is near the end of the alphabet, and he had to wait 2 weeks for an answer (acceptance).

I suspect the adcom meets the afternoon after the last day of that round of interviews. Then they have regular meetings at the end of the week - Thursday or Friday - and admissions updates MWUNet late in the day or the next day.

There's some missing piece with the acceptance office & processing your checklist / matriculation agreement, but I'm not sure how it factors.

That's my working hypothesis, anyway.

Well, I am nervous to be placed back on hold! I interviewed knowing that I may have to retake the PCAT in January. My official PCAT score from September came today and the school should get it pretty quick. They said they would look at both PCAT scores to make sure that I was "capable" in all subjects before making a decision. My first test I didn't finish the Math and Chemistry sections and it dropped my composite to 29. But, my other scores were pretty good/solid. BUT, during my second test I was so stressed out about the Math and Chemistry that I dropped my other subjects overall scores, but dramatically improved the Math and Chemistry, ending up with a 31.

I hate that test because I am not a strong test taker AT ALL, and worry that I have to go through it again. When I took practice tests I scored in the 70's and 80's, so I don't know how to calm my nerves during the exam to get through it with an okay score. 🙁

I guess anything is possible, but the unknown is killing me. At least I got the interview out of the way.

Happy Waiting!
