I’m hoping a current student can elaborate on the level of the group work at CPG. I realize it’s a big part of their curriculum and they take great pride in it, but how often do the students actually work in groups? At USN, for example, they break into groups every day and even take tests as a group, with the group average being to raise an individual’s score. I’m not opposed to groupwork, but every day seems excessive. Is the groupwork less frequent at CPG, perhaps just once a week or once a month? And, do students only study with the people in their group? What happens if you want to study with someone outside your group? Is that frowned upon because you’re not being a team player?

During out first year so far:

We had one class in which we had to do 5 article summaries as a group. Another class we had to do one article summary. And in Biochemistry we had to do a project and presentation on a disease. All of these are done outside of class. We have workshops for physiology and biochemistry and in those you usually work in groups to complete the activity/quiz (those were about every week for the first 2 quarters, alternating between the two classes).

In addition, in one of our classes this quarter we are grouped in families (which is different from our "groups"; don't know why, but it's nice to work with other people). We're just together during that lab time to answer some questions about various OTC's, learn how to counsel appropriately, etc. You're still pretty much graded individually.

Second and third year I know have group projects and presentations, but I'm not sure how often.

As far as studying, some groups study together, others don't; it depends how well they get along, etc. You can study with whomever you like.

The group work at Glendale is not overwhelming at all. I never liked group work in my undergrad because it seemed like you always had some deadbeats in the group. Here, everyone seems to be on the ball, willing to work and get things done. I have had good experiences so far with my group.

Off2skl summed up the group work to date well. The next two years, you do mor presentations with your group each quarter and the projects will be more in depth, as should be expected. No, you don't have to study or even hang out with your group if you don't want to. You just need to make yourself available when needed to knock out a project. I have lucked out and got a great group, I am probably the slacker in it. Kind of a nice feeling.

The USN groups are a different matter, as you will be working with them constantly.

The bulk of the group work at Midwestern is done with Integrated Sequence case studies after first year. Yeah, I liked my group, but I never saw them outside of school. Other groups were always hanging out after class, during breaks, etc. It just depends on your particular group's composition.
And you can study with whomever you want, whether it be your group, your family from APC, your spouse, or nobody. Nobody cares...as long as you succeed in learning the material.

Yeah, that's what I've heard.
