I'm out-of-state for Indiana, so MWU and IUSD tution will be the same. I have developed some pros/cons, and was wondering what everyone thought. (If you're waiting on a specific school, don't state to attend the other!)

Indiana

  • Established patient pool
  • Research opportunties
  • Old facilties
  • Cheap location
  • PBL... eh?
  • You know what you're going to get
  • History of producing excellent clinicians
  • Alumni based
  • Public... (bad when economy is going into a recession?)
Midwestern

  • Clinics are not built yet
  • No established patient pool
  • Everything will be one year old
  • Nice summers
  • Still ironing out bumps
  • Extremely nice faculty and students loved it thus far
  • Systems-based learning
  • Private
What are some more takes on this...

Thanks in advance.

Indiana has snowstorms, MWU doesn't; I believe MWU has their books on DVD, which is especially helpful when trying to reference. You can perform a search and it will cross-reference ALL of your textbooks. Pretty cool, in my opinion. Also, MWU has Nicer preclinical sim-facilities than Indiana (Indiana only had a handful of the mannequins, whereas with MWU everybody gets their own). MWU has already attracted some great faculty members and boasts a good faculty:student ratio (don't remember exactly what it is, but I remember being impressed by it on my interview day). Finally, you have the opportunity to help establish the legacy of a new school and BE part of the initial alumni network. I liked both schools a lot, but for me, it wasn't to difficult to go with my gut and side with Midwestern. Good luck in your decision, and congratulations on your acceptances.

Hey, Reo? Did you hear from MWU this morning? or you're just wondering in case you are accepted at MWU?

books are not on DVD here; but according to the dean it's for good reason. to get our books on DVD you have to buy more licences to books you don't need. the dean said that he'd rather keep student costs as low as possible considering the high coast of tuition already. if you want a heads up, talk to students about which books to buy. i got excited and bought every book on the list; of which i've used over half but could of saved more $$$. Everything is provided for you here. you name it you got it. anyways, i can assure you that you would not regret coming to MWU. it's great. and our patient pool is HUGE! haha. i just read on SDN about a satalite clinic that ASDOH opened in Glendale that has 4 chairs or something. But there are so many patients, it won't touch the patient need. Lots of people to help.

As Oracle DMD pointed out, theres a high demand for dental care in the area, so I don't think patient pool will be a problem here. And from all the plans of the clinic I heard so far, it is going to be an awesome clinic (just like how our sim clinic is).

As Oracle said as well, you really don't need to buy all the txt books. The basic sciences professors here do a great job with writing their notes, and all our exam questions come directly from the lecture notes. Also our lecture notes are all printed out for us in a packet, which we receive in our mail boxes every week.

I interviewed at IU last year and know what you mean. I like the list you made OP and I understand your concerns with MWU in regards to patients and the clinic. MWU has a host of other medical programs which require patients at school clinics. There is the medical clinic across the road as well as the podiatry clinic which do not seem to have issues gathering patients. I guess in the end we'll all just have to wait and see but none of us here are too worried about it.

With the presence of Viagra on the market, all of the older folks in the retirement communities are investing in their grillz to be more "marketable". No joke, this is coming from the dean at ASDOH who said they are getting patients from the communities around MWU for this reason. Viva viagra!
