Hi Guys,

I was wondering if midyear is absolutely necessary? I kind of already have an idea of which residencies to apply to, and I plan on communicating directly with residency directors / residents if I have questions. I just can't justify spending $1000 dollars to go to midyear, and then also pay extra travel costs if I get invited to interviews.

What do you guys think?? I guess I can suck it up and just pay for it, if it will significantly increase my chances of getting a residency. Anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks

The day after I returned from Midyear as a resident, I probably couldn't have even remembered half the people I talked to. Midyear is fun and a great experience for a student, but it's not worth sending yourself into the poorhouse. (Well, maybe it is if it's in Las Vegas. 😀 ) If you already know which residencies you want to apply to, you'll be fine skipping it.

I never went and I got my first choice residency (they didn't go either).

I dont think mid year is necessary but it is very useful. You get to meet the residents and learn more about their program. It's worth going!

Its not necessary but it does help, to get to know what programs are out there, and during interview time, when they ask "so how did you like our residency booth at midyear? or "who did you speak to during midyear?"

Honestly though, midyear is just a nice excuse to take a break from rotations and have a good time. For that alone, its worth it.

I wish I knew this ahead of time. I was like an excited little kid who wanted to go to Disneyland + ASHP. I'm currently third year, I have heard 2 sides of the coin. They said that going as 3rd year is good to get yourself ahead and see if you want to go to residency or not. This will also help you make your next year's process a bit smoother. Imagine if you didn't know the dates of the showcases? From what I've heard, having been there at least once is good enough. Some people I knew went to their 3rd year and didn't go during fourth year, then still have gotten into a residency. Unless you are planning to do a poster show, then you may need to go the following year. If I didn't buy all the ticket, hotel reservation and registered 3 months early. I might have reserved this ASHP for next year. It's expensive!!!!

For any of the big meetings, talk with your organization. Our ASHP and APhA chapters reimbursed members $XXX for active members (who logged a set hours of organizational/community services). The university also has less well known funds that reimbursed certain career development activities. By car-pooling with 3 other people, 4 of us sharing a room w/ 2 queen beds, and go easy on the expensive bar hoping, the reimbursements were able to cover the bulk of fees and expenses. 😀
