Hello

I am an EM residency trained doctor. I was wondering if I joined the military and wanted to go back to residency, will the military help me pay for a residency in the civilian residency programs ie provide funding if I give them a commitment. Who would I talk to to find out more information on this?

Your question is one I doubt can be answered correctly by a recruiter. You probably should call the Army's GME director in Falls Church, Virginia and ask them directly. Does anyone on the board know who that is now?

I wanted to leave ER and try a different specialty but find it difficult because of GME funding issues. There are some spots open if I could get funding through ie the military but I am not allowed to provide my own funding. So, who do I contact to find out these questions? Do I have to contact each division separately ie army/navy etc

I've met a number of physicians in the military who changed specialties. Almost all of them graduated a military residency, finished their utilization tour and then applied for a different residency.

I suspect you'd have to server a tour as an ER doc and then apply for the match. I think that emergency medicine is a critically manned specialty right now so they might not permit you to change fields.
