Hi all,

I am married to a 4th year dental student who has been signed up for the HSPS since day one. We knew full well what we were getting into; however, I as our time in the service nears, I am starting to have a few questions in regards to army spouses' working or having a career. Here are my questions:

1)Does your spouse work?
2)If so, what kind of work does your spouse do?
3)Is he/she able to find work easily from location to location?

Many thanks! Your responses will help me greatly!

My wife is a teacher and she has worked everywhere we have been except now. She is a stay at home Mom now, but will go back to work when our son starts school.

Experiences vary on this. It depends on what your career field is and the opportunities for that specific career field where you go. You will have some opportunities on base/post.

Hmmm... interesting. My wife was a teacher as well before we had kids and she may go back to it. Did your wife teach on base or just in the surrounding neighborhoods? Was her experience positive?

jmick101,
She has done both. She taught on base and off base in Colorado Springs and off base in San Antonio. Her experiences have all been positive. My wife has enjoyed staying home with our son for the last 4 years, but I think she's looking forward to going back to work next year.

Here's a wrench to throw into it... what if you're married to a fellow service member except he's in the Army? Would they pull any strings to help get him transferred to the Air Force? He's commissioned as a MSC.

tigertooth08,
I'm not sure they can help get him transferred, but I know AFPC will work with you to help you get stationed close to him. They can't always work it out perfectly, but they do a pretty good job. You should contact the dental folks at AFPC and let them know your situation.

They usually will try to station you near each other. When his obligation (or yours) is up you can also look at an interservice transfer. Each different AOC (job) will have limits, but if he is a Major or below there is the possibility he can transfer - depends on the Air Forces saturation with his job. For you the Army will let you transfer up until you are a Lieutenant Colonel.

Thanks for the information!
