I was actually playing poker last night with somebody who was a medic in the Army during the Iraq invasion. He's now a nursing student. I was asking him if he would ever consider being a physician in the Army. He said absolutely if we weren't at war. No malpractice, many things are free, no loans, serving your country, etc. He said Iraq is a lot more dangerous today than it was several years ago when he was there and wouldn't even consider it unless we were out of that mess.
I've filled out the paperwork for the Army HPSP but am not sure if I'll go that route. I'd like to have that option available to me if it seems like the right thing to do. My father was in the Air Force and I really enjoyed the experience of living in Europe. However, it's likely that as a physician I will have at least one if not more deployments in Iraq. So for that reason, I'm cautious about it and not sure of my decision yet.
