Minimum and average GPA/MCAT for several D.O. schools?

I have utilized various sources to no avail. I am looking for a minimum GPA requirement for applying to the following schools:
  • Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Tuoro College of Osteopathic Medicine - NY
Touro COM-NY's website says "expected B or better in prerequisites." Is this a minimum requirement? I have a C in one prereq course but all others are A's and B's. Would I make it through initial screening?

Also, does anybody have a link to stats on average accepted applicants' MCAT score and GPA data?

A few Cs here and there are no big deal. What's your sGPA and cGPA? If you have a C in a core prereq, just retake it and do better.

I've got a few Cs and I was still offered an interview at Touro NY
 
I applied to both ACOM and TouroNY and got ii's from them. I have more than a couple C's, and one D and one F (non science) but still managed 3.3 gpa without retaking that D and F. Touro likes higher BS and PS MCAT sections, or so I hear. In short, numbers are very important but EC's and MCAT are too.
 
TouroNY apparently do like higher BS scores on the MCAT but that rumor about them not inviting anyone for an interview if they got less than a 10 on that section is wrong. I had a 9 and I've heard of others with scores under 10 getting interviewed/accepted

2.8 & 2.9, 29 on the MCAT. I worked at BioLife for 1 year and have been working in the OR at Mayo for the past 15 months.

This sounds similar to mine (BS11 PS11 VR7) and it worked for me. Like others have said though retake classes until you get s/c GPA >3.0

KCUMB screens you out automatically if you have a science or cumulative GPA under 3.25. No other school has this high of a cutoff. There are a couple of schools that say you must have a 2.8 or whatever, but I'd operate under the assumption that 3.0 is the absolute minimum (except KCUMB).

KCUMB's cutoffs are silly. They are willing to accept people that barely meet each cutoff while rejecting people that are stellar overall, but just barely miss one of the cutoffs.

example:
3.4/3.3/25- interview
3.6/3.2/34- rejected with no secondary

I agree. The only conclusion I can come up with is that they are overwhelmed with apps and needed to find an efficient way to weed out a lot of people. I guess simultaneously weeding out a few otherwise stellar applicants is collateral damage.

I will say that KCUMB's abnormally high cutoff gave me that little push I needed to retake a couple of classes to push that cGPA up, and I'm glad I did.

This isn't always true. It's what they say on the website but they have a "sub committee" that looks at stellar candidates that fall below certain minimums. I know someone with a 3.0 cum and a 33 mcat that was just recently accepted. They still advise you not to apply if you fall below the minimum but those cutoffs are for Guaranteed secondaries. If you have below a 3.25 but your Mcat is above 30, I would apply and hope your app gets sent for further review.

That being said, my best friend had over 3.5 cum and science with a 27 mcat but was screened out because he had a 6 in verbal reasoning. He was accepted to the masters program, but he most definitely should have been accepted to the college of medicine in my opinion. It's a crapshoot.

This is the answer. You can even retake the classes while you're applying, just keep the admissions office updated.
 
I remember a time when people despised user3's posts, but lately I have seen people wanting user3 around for these types of cases.

User3 needs a counterpart poster on these threads.
 
It might also help to download the most recent Lizzy spreadsheet and put in your stats.

competitiveness is generally going up, but I think it is exaggerated a bit. For example, Western-Pomona is commonly touted as a low tier MD in terms of admissions, but you, Back5, Alnafis, guylewis, and Isha2018 were all accepted there with pretty average stats...

That is true, but you're pretending there isn't a 10th percentile in MD schools that shouldn't be far off the averages we have. Many pomona students come in with high honors and mcat.

I have spoken to a few of those guys and their stories can't be summarized by numbers. I personally think they were strong applicants. Pretty average my a**.

I'm not sure when you interviewed at WesternU but when I was there I saw plenty of 3.5/30+ guys. I jokingly asked the kid sitting next to me if he was ready for the interview panel and he said to me "Nah, this is only my 6th interview. I don't get warmed up until 11 or 12."

I can see why WU will opt for the more humble applicants.

Edit: One of those applicants recently got accepted to an MD school.

Just because someone with high numbers interviews there doesn't mean they are 100% interested in attending.

I really wish DO schools would start taking the Wash U method of numbers whoring. I bet COMP and other schools could get their averages up to 3.6/30 or higher if they did this.

Their stats would be rejected at a low tier MD (NYMC, Albany, CMS).

Who said Western-Pomona is low tier MD in terms of admissions? It definitely is not. They even admit around 2/3 of the people they interview which isn't even the case at the lower tier MD's.

As someone accept to COMP, I hope our school never goes the WashU way. COMP gained its reputation by recruiting the "right" people. There's no reason to change our recipe of success only to cater to ranking companies and people's ego.

Well, WesternU does have a 3.6/28 average. That means that many people that they accept probably get into low tier MD schools which is why they have to accept more. If tomorrow WesternU awarded an MD degree, it would see an avalanche of 3.7/32+ people looking to attend. The same cannot be said of the current low tier MD.

The point I was trying to make was just because someone with high stats applies doesn't mean they will get accepted.

I agree that their averages would jack up if they switched to MD, but they are DO, so I stand by my original point.

WashU is a top school. They can get away with it because their top applicant base is very high and diverse, whereas a DO school would have to select only the few that have a great academic track record.

DO schools work with the applicant pool they have. I happen to think that DO schools are more number(MCAT) whoring than MD within their applicant pool. You will hardly see an applicant with 3.2c/sGPA and 27 MCAT not getting into a DO school. Check the allo forum and you will see number of applicants with 3.5 c/sGPA and 33 MCAT with ZERO acceptance.

I agree with this.

DO is more of a numbers game where if you have the numbers, you are more likely to get in. In MD, you can have the numbers but it is still VERY common to not get in.

It doesn't happen as often, you are right, but you still see schools like DMU CCOM and Western rejecting people with MD level numbers post interview while accepting people with average numbers. This makes me upset, as these schools are wasting an opportunity to increase their averages which is (like it or not) how many people judge them.
 
Need help guys. Got my MCAT back today 31 (12/6/13). VR is low and I know that. Are there any schools that would be more lenient with this? My undergrad gpa is 3.52 and science is 3.52 as well. 80+ Shadowing, 20+ Research, 125 Volunteering, employment, some college sports and other similar EC's. Tell me what to do please 🙂 thank you for any input

KCUMB interestingly is no longer using the NBOME (DO) shelf exams during third year. They're now using the NBME (MD) shelf exams instead. Lots of changes at that place.

They weren't pre-reqs or science. Just a psych and a soc class that I barely attended that quarter when I had chronic bronchitis. I thought I could just toughen it out and make it through. Very immature of me on hindsight. I go to Western now.

DMU has a great reputation and produces quality physicians. Why would they care about raising their entrance stats when their board scores and residency placements are already great? A lot of DO schools are big on making sure the school is right for you..... They might select someone with a 27 mcat over someone with a 35 because of personality fit. Seems to be a great method so far.

On another note, working at St.Luke's I come across many Wash U grads. Some are good, some are absolutely terrible. The ones that I know are highly intelligent... but very arrogant and not very personable.

DO schools are doing fine with stats. If you are going to worry about anything, worry about the new schools.
