For the med school I am attending this fall I need a laptop with a processor with 2.0+ GHz speed, but i have a laptop with 1.6 GHz speed. Will this be okay? Im very ignorant with technology lol.

Thanks!

Hello my friend.

First what do you want to do with computer?
For example, watching movies, internet, writing reading, typing, playing... Ect.

You may want to ask something new or that’s a little bit faster. You may find time for your simultaneously running to different note taking app while watching a lecture And so on. That’s kind of things can stack up and really wear down your processing

What kind of computer is it and what year was it made?

Well I'd have to buy a whole new laptop, but I don't plan to take much notes on my laptop. I recently bought the newest version of the iPad pro

You should be more than fine with that. There's a lot more to a processor than speed and Macs use Intel chips which won't give you any issues. It may show its age by the end of 4 more years but it should suit you fine unless you plan to do any video editing or anything.

A laptop with 1.6 GHz speed doesn't meet their requirements but is most likely acceptable. What kind of laptop do you have? When did you buy it?

It's a silly requirement.... they do understand that you can change the clock speed right?

Administrators...

2015 MacBook air, bought it in 2016. The requirement says i5 intel chip with 2.0+ GHz and I have the i5 intel chip.

The school will reimburse for a new laptop, right? Why not take the opportunity to just get a new laptop so you don't find yourself needing a new one during MS2/3?
I do not believe they will reimburse. I will have to call to make sure though. If they do then yes I'll take them up on that.

I would advise getting a new one. Not because of the requirements but because it's 4 years old. It's going to start deteriorating in the immediate future if it hasn't begun already.

Yeah I feel that. I’ll probably just use it atleast for the first two years since it’s only a requirement for the first two years, and I’m sure it can last for another two years. Also, I found out that it has the 2.7 GHz turbo as well.

Maybe sell it but you should be fine just using the iPad pro
I’ll probably look to sell it in a few years. It still works perfectly fine but my thoughts exactly regarding the iPad Pro it’s crazy how nice it is

Yea I was thinking about just iPad pro as well earlier this year
, it's a good pickup

So Intel has been making Core i5 processors for about a decade now. Your MacBook probably uses an Intel Core i5-5250U processor, which is a 5th generation mobile(laptop) processor. The latest Core i5 being used in current laptops is 8th gen. Using a common processor benchmark called PassMark, let's look at how your processor stacks up against the older and newer i5 chips.

Common 1st gen i5 processor: i5-430M @ 2.27GHz: 2097 points

The 5th gen core i5 in your Macbook: Core i5-5250U @ 1.60GHz: 3583 points

Common 8th gen i5 processor: Core i5-8250U @ 1.60GHz: 7678 points

If any >2.0GHz i5 processor will work, the i5 in your MacBook is roughly 1.7x faster than the minimum requirement. Unless it breaks or you find it too slow, I'd save the money and upgrade in a couple of years. Don't listen to anyone claiming it will or already is deteriorating. The battery probably doesn't last as long as when it was new, but those MacBooks can easily last 8-10 years if well kept.
