I've read on another website that many DO schools have a minimum sectional score acceptable for the mcat. I tried looking on different school websites, but they only list a minimum composite score. Saw on Okstate's website

"At the time of application, the applicant
must have an overall grade-point average
of at least 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale), a
preprofessional science GPA of at least
2.75, and a minimum of 7 average score
on the Medical College Admissions Test
(MCAT)."

What's a minimum of 7 average score on the mcat? Minimum as in can't get a 6 on any section or minimum as in (7+7+7)/3= 7?

Any information or links will definitely be appreciated. Also, do any of you know anyone who got into DO schools with a 6 on any of their sections?

11ps, 11bs, 6vr, P 3.81gpa. 6 in vr is killing me right now 😕 If there is a cut off at 7 I'm screwed. If you know which schools do have one, please provide either a website or at least the name of the school... Thanks in advance.

Well I believe that some on here have had less than a 7 in a section and still got an interview/acceptance. However, at some schools this may not happen. You probably should take the MCAT again. I know, you probably don't want to, but your other stats are really good so it would suck for a 6 to hold you back.

There seems to be a wider range of acceptable MCAT scores, I think though that most schools would be looking at around a 24 or so depending upon your GPA and other factors. There are people who have gotten in with lower, I think different schools have different policies. I heard the average for an accepted student at DO schools nationwide is around a 26, some of the more difficult schools post their average as around 27.

it really depends on the school. Each school looks at different things. Some might look at the composite some might look at individual parts. You did pretty well on the MCAT so I don't think that 6 will be a complete deal breaker. Applying to med school is like a crap-shoot, I know people who got lower 20s in their mcat and got into multiple schools.

While I am not sure if many schools have a cut off, from what I have heard it appears to be that if a cut off exists it is a 7 in each section. That website you quoted above means that you have to have a 7 in each section.
I would retake that MCAT as quick as I could. The Kaplan MCAT class that I took told us that the VR score is the one most tied to success in medical school (something about being able to read and synthesis information). Not to disagree with the other previous posters on this topic, but the rest of your application would have to be pretty stellar to make up for a 6 in VR. It stands out in your application. In short, I would retake the MCAT after pounding some VR passages.

I respectfully disagree. I think your score will def land you an acceptance with your GPA as long as you have decent clinical exp./ECs and knowledge of the DO philosophy. The 6 isn't ideal, it would be a lot more ideal to have a more balance score, but if you go look on mdapps, idk how some people got into school

MSUCOM posts their minimums for a secondary in the CIB. I believe it is an 18 total with at least a 5 in PS, 4 in VR, and 6 in BS.

I got 11B, 10P, 6V, P on my MCAT and I had multiple offers for interviews and acceptances. I don't think a 6 in verbal will hold you back as much as you think as long as everything else is solid in your applications. If you are planning on applying to MD schools, the 6 will definitely hold you back unless you are URM. But for DO schools I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just FYI, I received interview invites at Bradenton, Erie, VCOM, DMU, AZCOM, And NYCOM.

Hey, do you think I would be at a disadvantage at NYCOM with my scores? 10 BS, 9 PS, 6 VR....do they have a cutoff for verbal? GPA 3.74, solid ECs/LORs

Does anyone know the minimum MCAT scores for all DO schools ?

I read somewhere that MCAT cut-off for NYCOM is 19 ?

Here is a question I had in my mind the past few weeks. I know that some MD school cherry pick the best section of the MCAT and consider the best overall score (if you've taken more than one MCAT of course) Do any D.O. schools do the same?

PS did you notice I wrote do 3x in the last sentence. lol

I think the DO school in OH and Pikesville do that. I hope I remember it right. I got a 6 in the first try so, I asked around. However, I retook it within a month and got a 8 so, I don't really know if DO schools cared about the 6.

Thanks deepa100 for your response but are those the only 2 schools that cherry pick? Come on people lets get this question answered.

A few other schools have hard cutoffs. If I remember correctly, LECOM will not accept anyone with less than a 24 overall or less than 7s in any specific section (correct me if I'm wrong). In turn, UNECOM will not admit anyone whose writing score is less than M (http://www.une.edu/com/admissions/criteria.asp).

There are probably others, but these are ones that stand out in my mind.

I think your best bet would be to contact the individual schools if you are worried about it. I'm 99% sure I had a 6 in one section (I don't even remember my MCAT score these days!) and I got into PCOM and had several other interviews.

I hope what you guys are saying is all true. I've been out of school for 10 years (as a dds) for 10 years and took the MCAT yesterday. Having a 3.73 UG and 3.4 Dental gpa should mean something. Hoping for the best, especially in the PS section.

You do realize that just because those are the "minimums" doesn't mean they'll accept you with an 18. In fact, I doubt any school will accept you with anything less than a 7 or 8 and then only if your other scores were very high.

The entire purpose of "minimums" is so they can take more applications - read secondary application fees - from more students even if they absolutely no chance to get accepted. This also applies to MD programs.

To OP: You're going to have trouble getting into some programs unless your otherwise an exceptional candidate and your essays are fantastic. I really don't know if you should retake it - or spend the money and try to get in this year. That's a personal decision.

Wow so you've been a practicing dentist all this time and you want to go back to med school? What made you decide to go down this path now?

Nice thread resurrection!! Two years old!

Applying to DO schools, Michigan resident and I have a 10VR/10BS/6PS. : ( On practice tests I was averaging an 8 or 9 on PS, I really don't know what happened. In any case I'm applying this cycle and not retaking because I just got my score back this week and don't feel I have time to retake this cycle. Any suggestions on schools?
