Minimum Step I score of 80

Hi all,

I have been told by several residency programs I am hoping to apply to that they will only consider applicants with a Step I score of 80 or higher. This was after I specifically asked them.

Surprisingly, many of the top programs stated there was no minimum, whereas a couple of the programs I would classify as middle-tier had a minimum.

This worries me, as my score is only 77 (188). Tell me, how worried should I be?

Remember, if your goal is to become a well trained pathologist, that score in itself will not keep you from finding a decent program (community or otherwise)

That being stated the following questions should be considered:

Are you and IMG?

Do you have a research background?

How are your LOR's?
When do you plan on taking Step 2?
Did you do a path rotation?
How strong is your personal statement?

There are a few posts from last years interview season that may help to answer some of your questions.

There are plenty of other factors that are used when granting interviews.

USMLE scores may become a factor when there are many more interviewees than slots.

What are other factors in your application that can balance out anything that you consider deficient.

Apply to programs accross the board including some community.

Community programs may not have as stringent requirements but depending on your goals, the training is excellent.

Don't dwell too much on an exam grade you cannot change. Its not an albatross. From this point on work hard to rock step 2 and do very well in a path rotation. Preferably from a place you would like to attend.
