Hi everyone,

I was arrested/jailed for a minor traffic violation, speeding, in 2009.

AADSAS indicated that speeding is a minor traffic violation, and doesn't need to be reported. What should i do in this case?

Thank you in advance

i feel like if you were arrested/jailed you need to include this on the application. i think they are referring to getting a ticket for speeding doesn't need to be reported

First off, how fast were you going that you were jailed!?

But overall I think it's best to let your schools know about it and report it this way you have a chance of explaining it during an interview rather than having them think you lied to them once the background check comes. It's just a speeding violation so worst comes to worst your interviewer might just laugh at it during your interview, but if you don't report it your morals come into question.

We're going to be doctors someday so it's best to own up to your actions and to be honest about what happened.

Get yourself a background check....

See what shows up....

Expect to pay like $30 to $70 the higher the price the more thorough the search....

After 7 years, most states will not allow publication of misdemeanor stuff....

Then based on what results you get .... You answer....

Don't rush on this one.....

I was arrested for speeding and it says you do not need to report those incidents because it is a minor traffic violation. I did a county background check and it shows as: date/case number/speeding/jailed. This odd because it is for a speeding ticket and that is not subject to jail time.

Let me guess, you're in Virginia?

If you got jailed, it doesn't sound very minor to me.

Where can I do a thorough background check?

So OP went 0 to 100 real quick?

Weakfart, I wasn't doing much over the speed limit. During the encounter, I ticked off the officer and resulted in an arrest and jail time. My conviction is for speeding only. Really difficult to answer because speeding is a minor offense but jail time is not.

Try this one. . . Or you can order your own background check from the FBI.... But that would take 4-6 weeks, and you will have to go to several different places....

No more driving fast.....

And try some googling.... Find out what kind of law was broken in your case.... Sometimes driving at high speed is a criminal act.... If I were you get a background check....

If it does show up then simply put yes.... And say you were testing your new car for performance ;-)

I would disclose it and explain. If they find out after the fact, they will rescind your acceptance. Just not worth it. I think there is probably more to the story that you are not sharing because minor speeding tickets don't result in jail time. You must of ticked off the officer pretty badly, doing something??? If you found it in a background check, so can dental schools. It's still probably not a big enough deal to make a difference in your overall acceptance. They are looking for "real" crimes mostly. Now, if you were throwing punches or attacked the officer, that might be an issue because they don't want dentist flying off the handle like that 😀.

That makes it not a minor offense...you got arrested. That's a big deal

I recognize your pic from the MD forums. What are you doing over here? Go back to which you came!

I get bored in the dental forums... not as active... I should sign off SDN once in a while.
theres like 5 of us on here that respond to questions and posts way too fast...oh well lol :corny:

Yeah I know that's why I see the same 5 accounts! It's not bad, like a little club where I start to recognize old users and new ones. The MD forums are like super active though so it's a nice read and sometimes you see why people hate SDN over there, the dental forum isn't anything like the MD forum.

the case was not present under criminal record. It is present in the driving record. I talked with a lawyer. Based on the questioned ask, he said to put "no" as an answer because it is a minor traffic violation.

Good for you....

Stay out of trouble....

From here on be professional....

You don't want to get that feeling again when you are about to be licensed or in any moment of that nature......

Good luck.

There are actually varying degrees of traffic violations. I'm not an attorney, but I do remember this being an issue for guys going through MEPS to enter the military.

Once in a while, someone puts down that they've never been arrested even though they have (paperless arrests are a thing).

That said, an arrest record is not the same thing as a conviction for a misdemeanor / felony. However, there are instances where traffic violations can lead to misdemeanor or felony charges. Confusingly, sometimes misdemeanors are less serious than infractions. Also, you can be arrested without being charged with a crime (the police have a time limit to hold you without formally charging you for a crime) so it is possible to be arrested without being convicted of anything (remember, dental schools want to know about convictions). This is, in my opinion, a big problem with our justice system. If you show up to a rally or a protest and are arrested simply for being there and then released without charge you will till have an arrest record.

Just speeding is not enough to warrant an arrest, you typically have to be going well in excess of the speed limit (100mph in a 55mph zone for instance). As we are only hearing your side of the story and I'm not an attorney, I really can't comment on what you can / should do except to say that being arrested is not the same thing as being convicted of a misdemeanor / felony and that misdemeanor traffic violations are in fact less severe than traffic infractions (sometimes). I'm glad your attorney told you to select 'no' though as that seems to be the correct option from what you've said here.

why were you in the MD forums? :eyebrow:
I drift over to Pre-allo quite often. Weakfart is right - they are way more active over there and conversations are really interesting. I learned quite a few things about the med school admissions process and even consult some clueless friends sometimes. xD
