Missed question on 2ndary...what to do?

I was paging through my med school emails too look for contact info this morning, and I came across my emailed copy of my submitted Wash U secondary. However, I noticed that question 4 was unanswered:

4. What college-level courses in differential and integral calculus will you complete prior to September?
AP credits are accepted if listed on your Transcript.

I took AP Calculus and could have sworn I filled this question in. And my AP course is listed on my transcript. So what do I do now? Should I call the admissions office to give them this info? Email them? Tell the interviewer (IF I get an interview)? Let it go because it's on my transcript? This has never happened to me before...I ALWAYS double-check my apps before submitting them. Do you think this omission could have any bearing on their decision whether or not to interview me?

First, calm down. Second, call the admissions office at WashU and let them know what happened. The couple of times I have called them they have been friendly and helpful. Just be polite and relaxed and it shouldn't be a problem.

You could call them and also write a letter answering the question so they can add it to your file. Perhaps after talking to them on the phone they can give you a little help as to what you should do.

Thanks, guys. After much debate, I decided to email instead of calling, so I could give them the exact info I needed to fill in. Hopefully if they want me to call they'll let me know...maybe I should call to follow up on it? Do you think something like this (and how I handle it) would affect my chances at the school?

I would send a letter mentioning your omission and attach a separate sheet with the question answered (with the AMCAS ID etc). You may have already done this via e-mail, although you may want to check with the ADCOM to see if they prefer a hard copy to insert into your file.

I would definitely follow-up with a phone call. Everyone forgets things... its no big deal, just make sure the necessary info gets into your file and U-dub adcom will know best how to accomplish this than any of us here! G'Luck

You kids need to learn a few things. E-mail is never good when taking care of important matters. Here's what you should have done, in order of importance.

1. Go talk to them in person
2. Call them up
3. Send them a letter by snail mail
4. E-mail
5. Instant Message

I think in this case it's better to follow up with a formal letter or a phone call. However, XCanadianRagwee, that tone of yours just doesn't seem too polite.

Downhill and Caleb: Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely call to follow up.

BTW...the reason I emailed was NOT because I'm "******ed" and can't dial 9 or 10 numbers, but because (1) I figured the admissions office gets a ton of phone calls and would prefer email for something like this, and (2) I could spell everything out precisely over email in a way that's difficult to do over the phone. I really did put a lot of thought into this and feel I have to defend myself in the face of XCanadian's comments.

Just as an afterthought...I don't know how it is at other schools, but where I am, EVERYTHING is done via email. The phone is pretty much obsolete here...some people don't even have phones because of this. I, for example, only have a cell phone, not a land line. So I'm used to doing things over email...I'm not trying to make excuses or anything, but that's just the way things are at my school.

I think you should be just fine. Sometimes calling is ok, but almost all the secondaries I have gotten have said something like: PLEASE EMAIL US ONLY ... so my impression is that, they would like to cut down on the phone calls 😉

These little things can slip off an application and it must happen alot more than we realize. Heck, at least you did realize it, which is a good thing.

Welcome to the club. I haven't had a landline for who knows how long. But you really should learn how to dial, I mean what's the point of any phone if you can't call anyone on it?

I never said I couldn't call anyone...just that the preferred way to keep in touch at my school is not phone but email. Anyway, I'm going to call the admissions office tomorrow, so I think it's time to lay this discussion to rest...

SHould have done that in the first place...I guess you looked in the cellular phone manual and saw that to make an outgoing call all you have to do is dial 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx then hit the "SEND" key

Just throwing my .02 in the ring. I had a mistake on my AMCAS where I had some typos in my experience section of my application. I called each school and they were more than happy to include my revised correct copy in my folder. The only school that did express some reservations about it was Iowa and they explained that they do everything there on computer. (where LOR come into this I dunno) Even so, they told me to mail it and they would include it in my file with my secondary. Since I am out of state and got an Iowa secondary I can assume they really didn't take my typos to mean I was a horrible person and unprofsssional. 😉

Thanks again for all your input. I called the admissions office today...the person I talked to was very polite and seemed grateful that I noticed the mistake. I told her about the question I missed and that I had already sent an email to the office to correct it, and she said there was nothing else that needed to be done. No hard copy or application re-submission necessary! So I guess I was worried for nothing.🙂

OP... no worries, no reason to defend urself on here

E-mail tends to fly for us 21st century folk but for the foogies (who are ultimately the ones deciding ur admittance or not), you need to show professionalism and that tends to mean at the very least, speaking to them. But do the extra effort since it was your own mistake after all and send them a hard copy just to be safe.
