With other factors being decent, is part 1 board score of 89 just not good enough for omfs admission?
From going through alot of threads on sdn, my impression is that there is a huge difference between 90 and 89 even though it's really only a matter of getting handful of more questions correct. Also,I think the exam did get considerably harder than ones in past.

Unfortunately a lot of places have written-in-stone standard to screen candidates for many programs. Just like there is not too much difference btw 74 and 75 of part I and Part II. Sometimes it is more like a game. If you want to play you have to follow the rules.

a person i know got into a very competitive 4yr program in the Bronx with an 89.
I've been advised by residents that more important is your demonstration to the admissions that you are truly passionate about the specialty and have demonstrated it through attending journal readings, rounds, and externships, etc.
The specialty community is small and intimate, so impressing your school's specialty faculty with your committment can go a long way to getting you into not only your school's program but other places as well through recommendation letters.
