Missing a day of class??

Hello, I am just wondering how tough it is going to be for me to make up one day of class while in vet school. I am starting next fall but already signed a contract to judge the Junior Showmanship finals for the Australian Shepherd Club of America National Specialty the end of September. I will miss one day (2 hr drive each way and likely to be scheduled mid-day) but I am worried about having to back out on the host club.

Is it impossible to miss a day? What about arrangments to makeup tests should one be scheduled (my luck I will have three that day!)? Nationals is a week long event and I usually have 2-3 dogs all participating in conformation, obedience, and stockdog trials so its already not going to be easy sitting in lecture knowing what I am missing out on!

I am not usually one to skip any classes so it will probably be the only time barring any unforseen illness or emergencies.

It's not hard to make up a day of classes. Ok-State records all lectures so you can watch them later. If your school does this then it will for sure be no sweat. As for tests, assignments, etc. most of the time it will depend on the professor. If there is a conflict, I recommend emailing the professor ASAP. Explain the situation and hope for the best. If they won't let you take it at a different time then you will have to decide which is more important.

This is the same at Michigan State. for the most part professors are really good about letting people move exams around (with the exception of one who's rather cranky). the only problem would be missing a lab, which really isn't even that big of a deal, you'll just need to make it up on your own time.

I think a good policy would be to bring this up with your professors at the beginning of the semester. I told my professors about missing class for my interview (I had to miss three total days) and it paid off because my biochem teacher rescheduled an exam to a day I was going to be gone! His policy is normally a cumulative make up exam but because I'd brought it up before he rescheduled he allowed me to take it ahead of time. Not a vet school scenario but probably couldn't hurt 🙂

You'll be fine! I'm not sure how your school works with mandatory attendance though, so if you do have that just bring it up at the beginning of the semester

Oh my goodness relax! Haha. Unless you have a mandatory attendance policy (in which case I am SURE you could get an excuse anyway) you'll be fine and won't have to do much but a little catchup.

Talk to the profs about the exams - it sounds like a very legitimate excuse, so they should be able to accommodate you unless they are absolute jerks.

Thanks for the replies. I was a guessing as much but did not want to assume that I could work things out then have to back out on the club less than a month before the show (people come from all over the world to compete so last minute judge changes are not taken very well lol). It doesn't sound as if it will be much different than making up a missed day as an undergrad and I definately planned on letting professors know ASAP.

I don't think every student in our entire class has ever been present on any given day. I'm a terrible student, so I really am not the person to ask, but I make good grades, and work hard and we videotape our classes (no mandatory attendance). I'll probably get railed for this and that's ok because I don't care, but I don't feel like all classes are mandatory to attend... but that's just me. I get very little out of most classes, since a lot of it is teachers directly reading off of slides right in front of me.... but then again, that's our note format. I also do okay (even somewhat better) listening to lectures after class in my own home.
