So I'm missing a 3 unit genetics class for KCUMB. The classes offered near home are all filled up. They want me to complete the course prior to matriculation, however, I wonder how this is possible for students who are accepted later down the line?

These students would probably find out in Jan and how would they be able to enroll in those classes in time to fulfill the requirements for entrance to med school?

Do you take courses online? Would that qualify? What about students who need lab? Goodness.

It's a valid course if it comes from an accredited collage that can produce a a transcript. Whether the lab is needed is up to KCUMB and up to the school that you're taking the lecture portion. I am not aware of any Genetics course that is offered online, but it doesn't surprise me if there are some.

You would have to take it in the spring or during the summer if it is offered. I believe your acceptance would be classified as "an acceptance with a contingency." You could try to enroll in the Spring for the course in the event that you are accepted to KCUMB. In the event that you do not, (I hope you do get in) you would at least have exposure to it before med school. That can't hurt. Best of luck!

Maybe they won't even look at applicants after January who would be unable to enroll in classes if they were missing the pre-reqs. I have a few suggestions for you: 1) Look for an on-line class and check with the school to see if it would qualify, 2) If you can't find one, see if a local school offers anther class that they might be willing to substitute for genetics and/or call the school and discuss your predicament with them, 3) You may be able to register at the last minute at a local school, many schools have wait lists and drop students who don't pay prior to classes starting. I am sure you can work something out. Good luck and congratulations on your acceptance! :luck:

I'm a first year at KCUMB and I was accepted in January. Prior to matriculation I had to complete genetics, biochem. and 4 credits of Bio (no labs). I took two online classes while I worked full time and took the 4 credtis of bio during the summer. I know many people who had to finish some requirements before starting school here. It is not impossible. 🙂

Genetics over the summer is really easy. I did it after my freshman year in college.

Are there no community colleges nearby? Anyhow, my genetics class didn't have a lab so I don't think KCUMB really cares about that. Just talk to the professors and politefully request that they over-write you in. If its just for lecture, then who cares. It shouldn't be that big of a deal.

(btw, genetics is really light here... so I don't see what the big deal is.)

Isn't Genetics an upper level class? Would a CC even have it? I thought CC's only had lower division classes.

Our community college does offer genetics but nothing beyond that.
