So I know that doc toothache has already listed links to articles discussing this, but I was hoping someone else might have some insight on this situation in particular.

I have been offered a spot on a week long mission trip this spring, where I would act in the capacity of a dental assistant/translator. I am a bio and spanish double major and have studied abroad in Spain, so I am very comfortable in my spanish.

Unlike the mission trips mentioned in the article, I will not be performing any procedures/restorations, but rather assisting in what is mostly preventative care for children.

Does this seem like it will be a strong EC to add to my application? Or should I merely continue volunteering locally as it would be comprable?

If you've got the money, go for it.

At my friends interviews, they were asked about overseas trips. If you already have the foundation (local volunteering), it's a nice talking point during interviews.

Forget about what it means for your application, just for the personal experience you should go.
