In case anyone was worried or was freaking out about not having a response, I sent an e-mail to Missy Hadaway and she said:

We are having technical difficulties which I am presently trying to
resolve. So, no, we still have a bunch of e-mails to send out. I'll get
back to you soon.

Missy Hadaway

There's still a chance for an interview woo hoo!

Hi guys!

I flew into Columbus/Golden Triangle last year for my interview. It is a great little airport - super easy to navigate! It was actually about the same price as flying into one of the bigger airports when I figured in the cost of renting a car, which was much cheaper at Columbus than in Jackson or Birmingham.

You will need to rent a car - I don't think there is much in the way of public transportation! I used Enterprise because they are one of the few companies that rents to folks under the age of 25. I got a free upgrade, so that was pretty nice! It is a very easy drive from GTR to Starkville.

I think I stayed at the Hampton Inn in Starkville, which was nice and close to the vet school!

The pizza party was fun! You should definitely go if you can. 🙂

Enterprise quoted me 17/day + a $25/day underage fee. Ouch! I guess I gotta do what I gotta do though, none of the others were much cheaper.

ginger - i applied to osu ksu miss state and uf.
i have only heard from Miss state. are u at uf now? if so whats your major?

ETA: I just looked at a weather report for Starkville, and it said the average summer temp was only 80...? Is that true? Obviously, there's like 90% humidity, but I was imagining worse, I think.

I wish it stayed in the 80's!! It is pretty darn hot down here in the summers... I had my third year Food Animal and Equine rotations during July and August, and even with the "mild" temperatures this summer, it was pretty miserable at times.... (but of course, totally worth it in the end =)

GTR (Golden Triangle Regional) is the only local airport, at about half-hour outside of Starkville. Only Delta flies there, and only connects through Atlanta and Memphis. The flights are usually more expensive, but if you purchase in enough advance, they can be reasonable.

Birmingham, Alabama usually has the most economical airfare, and is 2.5 hours away. Jackson, Mississippi's airport is around 2ish hours away, and Memphis is more like 3 hours.

I definitely recommend staying at the Hampton Inn, it has reasonable prices and is only a stone's throw from the school. The Comfort Suites is also quite close, although I've never stayed there so I can't speak for it's accommodations.

The transportation situation sucks. You can ask your second or third year interview mentor for a ride to the school, but it's kind of a lot asking to be picked up from the airport that's so far away =) Most of us just sucked it up and rented a car.

The pizza party is a good opportunity to meet your fellow interviewees, ask questions of the staff and your mentor in person, and get a detailed tour of the school. It is by no means a requirement though, and doesn't alter your chances of being admitted, so if it will cause you undue stress to attend, I wouldn't worry about it!

I'm currently a 3rd year (on my break!), so let me know if you have any other questions about Mississippi State! 🙂

I believe that they give a tour of a school the night before the interviews so I think it would be worth going to the pizza party/tour

They do give a tour, it is just a general overview but it is a great chance to see the anatomy lab and the common area for students. If you can go to the pizza party I would recommend it.

Does anyone know how many applicants Mississippi State interviews vs how many they actually accept (Out of state applicants that is). In other words...if after receiving an interview offer is there a good chance of being accepted or are you still competing with a large amount of people for few spots. Thanks!

In the meeting before interviews they had a few speakers come in and talk to us about various things. When Missy spoke she told us the number of OOS students that were being interviewed and the number that would be accepted, I don't remember the exact numbers but I calculated my chances while sitting there and remember it being about 21%. I don’t know if that helps at all. I think they usually interview a little under 200 OOS and accept ~40 but don't quote me on that.

If you get an interview I suspect they will give you the numbers for this years application pool.

I also remember calculating my chances out in my head while sitting in that session! Back when I interviewed in 2007, I had a 33% chance. Also keep in mind, because it is Mississippi, we generally end up going through a HUGE portion of our waitlist, because if OOS students get accepted elseware, most people have an innate aversion to choosing to live down here, so they choose the other place =) Not trying to diss the state, but I've found it to be true. For my class, they not only ended up accepting our entire waitlist, but they had to go back and accept 4 students that had originally interviewed and been denied, because we couldn't fill the seats!

This is super encouraging. Although I have already been denied an interview, the optimist in me is still holding out hope. I'm a southerner at heart and many of my family is from Mississippi. I'd jump at the chance to go to MSU. I think the students who elect to attend elsewhere don't know what they are missing!

I just graduated in dec with a degree in Animal Sciences with a specialization in Animal Biology. Im working full time at the McKnight Brain Institute on campus untill i figure out where i will be going to grad school. You should friend me on facebook just search "Chas Dickens" that way we can communicate easlier that then these forums.

I sent two emails last week and have not received a reponse, either. I believe they were closed for weather one day last week so they are probably behind.

We were closed on Thursday (If they even hint at snow, people in the Mississippi freak out (and forget how to drive)). The list is up concerning interviews, so i am sure you will get some sort of confirmation soon! Don't forget to check your spam folder!

I just went ahead and called and got a quick, easy confirmation that my Fall 2009 transcript had arrived

So reminder, if you haven't sent your fall transcript, it's due in a few days!

I responded to Missy Hadaway's interview offer back before Christmas and have not heard back from her. I tried to call today and just got her voicemail. Has anyone received a confirmation email from Mississippi or have received an email indicating the exact time of their interview? Isn't it odd to not have heard from the school since they sent the interview offers?

I responded back before Christmas too and haven't heard anything back either. I did just call to confirm that they received my fall transcripts and they did!

Just got an email confirming my interview! They didn't give me an exact time though. I assume we'll find out that day

Are they still doing the thing where you are assigned a mentor and they send you a list of possible interview questions? I know the e-mail says a mentor will contact us and answer any questions, but i thought I read something about how they would send us interview questions.

Or is that just a thing of the past? I only ask because if they don't, then I need to start preparing and researching now instead of waiting for questions.

I got an Email from my mentor today, however I did not get a list of interview questions. Im sure you can ask yours for some tips.

They (the administration) just emailed us yesterday letting us know that we are NOT allowed to send the email we got last year with the list of interview questions. Supposedly it is now in violation of our Honor Code. Its a shame, as that email was pretty helpful, however just reviewing the interview feedback on SDN (from all the schools) will give you similar insights.

Boo on that.

Are you my mentor?? Haha.

I've already emailed back and forth with my mentor, but I'm too chicken to ask about SDN.

To current vet students: should I be concerned if I haven't heard from my mentor yet?

Also, anyone know of any delicious classic southern restaurants in starkville?? mmmm mmm I love southern and/or cajun food!!

What are you guys wearing to the pizza party? I'm just got an outfit today. I'm wearing navy pants, a cream detailed top, a lavender cardigan, and gold loafers.

Are your parents coming to the pizza party/orientation/tour?

Most likely khakis, and a purple sweater with a white blouse underneath. Depends on what's clean when I go to pack!

As for the parents, thats a giant NO. I can only handle them in small doses, especially since every other word out of their mouths has to do with them retiring and me supporting them. Uh oh. Have they ever heard of student loans?

"The pizza party is a casual, optional event. You are invited to bring your parents or any others who might travel with you. We will give a tour of the facility at this time, as well as provide time for you
to meet and mingle with our students"

Seems like you can. I just meant that mine aren't allowed anywhere near my life...I live eight hours away from them for a reason!

Plenty of people bring their parents

There is some good BBQ - one place I personally like called "Little Deweys", but there are others as well. As far as traditional southern cooking, uhh, you mean fried? No cajun place come to mind, there was one, Rosey Babies, but think they closed.

Just outside of NYC--Long Island. Then moved to New Hampshire.

Nope, not me 🙂 But let me know when your interview is, I will be there all days, i'll say 'hi'

To current vet students: should I be concerned if I haven't heard from my mentor yet?

If you want to PM me your name, I will find out who it is and yell at them for you. But really, i'll find out and have them email ya if you would like

I think they'd be ok if they were "nice" jeans with a nice top. Don't come with a t shirt and nasty jeans hah

haha, girls put so much planning into these events! for me... probably a button down shirt and jeans.

I wore jeans, scrub top, and my grey hoodie to the pizza party. Honestly, I think it's rather silly to dress up for a freakin' pizza party. 😉

Had my interview ~13 hours ago, and just got home after driving straight from Starkville to WV. That's a loooooong drive. I feel good about my interview, however.

Now that you're rested, go fill out interview feedback please!
😛

We didn't find out our specific times until the pizza party. They'll have a list posted so you can look it up.

Boo! I went to undergrad at State and am very disappointed to hear that Rosey Babies closed. Very bad news for me. I might cry. 🙁
