Missouri Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I'm leaving for my first interview tomorrow 🙂! My interview isn't until Sunday, but I have a freaky long drive and want to have a good day in between.

I have a weather/clothing related question. As part of the tour, do we go to the teaching hospital? As I understand it, the lecture halls/teaching labs are in a different building. Will we be okay in interview clothing walking around on the tour? I have a skirt suit and sensible sandal shoes and I would really rather not have the hassle of changing after the interview.

Good luck :luck::luck::luck: to anyone who is interviewing at Missouri this weekend!!!!

If you do want to go on a tour, you will be able to see the teaching hospital, but you should be fine in your interview clothing and a coat. The walk to the VTH is just a few seconds across a parking lot, so you're not at risk of frostbite or anything lol.

Good luck, everybody!

Also leaving tomorrow bright and early! Good luck times infinity to the other interviewees - we're going to rock it! :luck::luck::luck:

I hope everyone's interviews went well today and that the weather wasn't too much of a hassle. My interview is in 9 days, and I'm getting increasingly excited as the 17th draws nearer! 😀

My Mizzou interview was very laid-back. There were 4 people that interviewed me and asked me questions regarding my application. Everyone was extremely friendly (Kathy Seay is the nicest woman you'll ever meet). If you are flying into Columbia, make sure you write down the name of a taxi company because there were no taxis at the airport (I took Tiger Taxi: (573) 445-2551). I'll post in the interview feedback once I get home. Good luck everyone!

Thanks for posting!

I came in yesterday and found Columbia to be pretty nice. I love 😍😍😍 Mizzou's main library, but I imagine most vet students don't get to the main campus much.

Good to know they haven't suddenly become mean/difficult interviewers in one year.

Yikes! 4 interviewers? I'm glad you posted b/c I would have walked in expecting only two. Not that it makes much of a difference but it's nice to know what to expect.

But then I'm in state and have a loooong time to wait before our interviews start!

I just had my interview this afternoon, and I have to say..I loved the school. I was blown away by the teaching hospital, state of the art equipment (some of it which only 3 other vet schools have in the country). The top floor is companion animal, the bottom is split between food animal and equine. There is an area dedicated to neonatal equine intensive care! I won't give away all the spoilers, just know it's amazing. And all of the large animal restraints were designed by Temple Grandin (if you know who I'm talking about, you'll appreciate it). All exams are computer based..they do this to help you prepare for the NAVLE exam (which students from Mizzou pass at a higher rate than the other veterinary schools-the student ambassadors will be sure to tell you this, haha). AND THE BEST PART: After the first year, out of state residents can gain in state tuition..so it ends up only being around $86,000 for four years. I was expecting to pay $200,000...so this works out for me. And everyone was so nice. Yes, there are four interviewers, but they make you feel at home and are generally interested in what you have to say. They just want to know more about YOU as an individual applicant. All I can say is..I hope to be accepted here. It was amazing! 😍 Oh, the colors are black and gold..and the mascot is a tiger. Heh..

i am with zeebra on missouri.. i loved it! the main street reminded me of my home town and everyone seemed really laid back and made me relaxed. comparing this to ohio interviews, it was a world apart! 4 interviewers, 3 of them asked me 2 questions each and then the last guy just 1 and that was a wrap. the students were great, seemed to love the school and all that jazz. the tour guides talked a lot about different research projects going on which was sweet 😀 only down side was there was a serious lack of patients which the guides attributed to the cold weather and snow/xmas season/weekend but assured me that usually it is packed! 👍

I'm going to throw my vote in with the "looooved MU" group. What a great experience, especially for my first interview! It was bitter cold, but I still really enjoyed everything about the weekend. The town and campus are the perfect size and very easy to navigate - everything you could possibly want is within easy driving distance.

Very impressed with the school's facilities and VERY VERY impressed with the people (students and faculty). I know it's next to impossible to relax before your interview, but believe them when everyone tells you how easy it will be. You'll feel right at home and the interview is very laid-back. Couldn't ask for more from a school's first impression. 🙂

Count me in too! The people were great, I was impressed with the facility, and some of the research topics are pretty interesting. I was also pleasantly surprised at how they pushed the OOS/IS change-over. They seem to realize that that is a selling point for OOS students and they aren't afraid to mention it repeatedly or guide you through the process. They said that no student who wanted/truly attempted to get IS status was denied, at least in recent memory.

If any SDNers were on the among the student ambassadors, you and your classmates guys did a great job

Good luck to all interviewing next week!

Glad to hear that everyone enjoyed the experience! 🙂

I was hanging out as an ambassador on Saturday afternoon, and I kept wondering if I was meeting SDNers in disguise. I'll be there next Saturday, as well, probably thinking the same thing the entire time lol.

Good luck to everyone interviewing next weekend!

Glad everyone seemed to enjoy their experience at Mizzou! I was a 3rd year giving tours on Sat and Sun. If you've got any questions, don't hesitate to PM me. Good luck with any remaining interviews!

To add to this, I'm not in Columbia at the moment (off on a really cool free block preceptorship, another big strength of Mizzou!), but I should be by this weekend. If anyone likes camelid (llama and alpaca) medicine, we're getting one of the top folks in camelid reproduction to give some talks here with the state camelid producers this upcoming weekend. So I don't know if I'll be there Saturday, but maybe Sunday for the lunch and Q&A and whatnot. Hope to see some of you! 😀

just to echo what people have said above me, if any of you applicants have any questions about the cvm or columbia, etc def dont hesitate to ask/ pm me, im a first year OOS and i remember how this site saved my ass on numerous occasions, coming from the east coast i had absolutely no idea what to expect. but rest assured mizzou is rad and youll love it here

goooooooood luck to you guys

COOL! I am very interested in camelid medicine, and will be interviewing at Mizzou this weekend..but I won't be around for much of Sunday my interview is first thing in the morning then I'm heading home..when exactly is this head honcho going to be there?

I interviewed 1/8 and LOVED every aspect of Mizzou. The campus is beautiful and the students and faculty are great! They were able to answer all of my questions and were extremely friendly. I think my interview went well; there were 4 interviewers and each took a turn asking specific questions about my application. MU CVM is definitally my first choice school and I can't wait until we start hearing back!! Good luck everyone that has an interview this weekend!!! 😀

Thanks! I'm flying out tomorrow morning, for a Saturday morning interview. Anyone else? I couldn't find any decent flights into Columbia, so I have to take a bus to Columbia from the St. Louis Airport :uhno: Not looking forward to that, but definitely excited to see the area.

I'm interviewing this weekend too..but not until Sunday morning. I'm flying into Kansas City tomorrow then driving to Columbia. Should be interesting..will anyone be touring or at the lunch on Saturday? I think I'll do all that stuff Saturday as my Sunday interview is first thing in the morning and I'm flying home shortly after..

I too flew into St. Louis airport (from the east coast) and the drive was not bad at all. Columbia is a great place from what I saw of it. There are a lot of shops and resturants to check out while you are there if you have time. Like I said before, I loved it, it is definitally a college town and there is no shortage of affordable apartments to choose from if accepted! I think there are only two more days for OOS interviews, the 16th and 17th right? If everyone gets their transcripts in early maybe we will be hearing sooner rather than later?! Anyways, good luck everyone!!!

: ) : )

Hey DickVetPlease, I'm flying into Missouri tomorrow morning also for a Saturday morning interview! I'll definitely be touring that day.

I'm going straight into Columbia Airport.

Hopefully I'll get to meet you!

WOW i'm a total idiot..

I just looked over my itinerary, and realized I scheduled an 11:25 am flight out of Columbia on Saturday, when my interview is at 10:15 saturday morning! To make matters even better (...worse) there are no later flights going out of Columbia on saturday to Cleveland...GREATTT lol.

You can probably make that. You'd just miss the tour and stuff, which sucks. I had to cut out really quickly for my brother's wedding (I'd never live down missing that one), but I did manage to get a tour in.

I think you can probably make this flight, as well. It's not ideal, and it depends on the interviews staying on schedule, but it could possibly be done. There will be students there from 7 am ready to take you on a tour, so I wouldn't worry about missing one if you want one. To keep your stress level down, though, I would sincerely suggest looking at flights out of St. Louis for later in the day and making a reservation on a rental car. It's a straight shot on I-70 to get to St. Louis from here in about 2 hours, so that's probably do-able, too. Good luck with it! Try not to stress!

Thanks for all your advice, I decided to schedule a flight for Sunday out of stl. Fortunately I have cousins in the St. Louis area, so I don't have to pay for an extra night at the hotel. This way I have time to get a better feel for Columbia too.

Anyone else in the courtyard marriott?? There's a bar and hot tub downstairs 😀

Lucky you! I'm in Super 8 and they have a hot tub also, but its under construction 🙁

I stayed at this hotel last year. I have no idea how any of the other hotels get any business, because I LOVED it. I *still* dream of the heaven that is their mattress in room 318. Sigh.

Good luck tomorrow and Sunday, guys! :luck:

I'm in the TravelLodge. The internet wasn't working in my room so I couldn't do anymore research! I went to the campus but the library was closed! Then the book store closed! But I eventually found internet in the Lobby. It's going to be exciting to meet some of you guys tomorrow 🙂 This may just be the most important 15 minutes of your life... nothing to worry about right?

Seriously...this hotel was awesome! I slept like a freakin baby on that bed (I was in 339, just down the hall).

I had a really great experience today at Mizzou. I was really impressed by their curriculum. It seems really hands on (heavy on the clinicals), and they make sure their students get experience in all major aspects of vet med. That's especially nice for me, since i'm not entirely sure what area I want to go into.

The people and interviewers were all extremely friendly too. I had to get to the bus station to get to the STL airport, and was about to call a taxi service when about four current students, as well as the admissions dean (that might not be the correct title, but her name was Kathy) jumped up and offered me a ride. They all seemed genuinely proud of their school and the education they're receiving.

I was a little intimidated by the interviewing situation as I walked in, with four people seemingly surrounding me, but they kept the interrogation to a minimum.

I have to say, I didn't think Mizzou would be around the top of my list, but with my experience today, and knowing the debt load coming out would be very manageable--yeah...who knows now.

Also, I got to talk a good amount to one SDN'er, though i'm not sure who it is. Whoever you are, i'm glad you had the courage to ask whether I was on SDN lol. Good luck on your interview tomorrow! PS, I was the guy who went on the van tour with you..(Good luck to everyone else also, you'll love it).

Hey Baltimore! This is said "courageous SDNer". I realized I could have asked you your name or at least your SDN name after we chatted for a while but oh well...found ya anyway!

My interview went very well, even though it was super early..glad you got to the station and on your way home alright.

About Missouri: I loved it! I'm in the same boat as DickVet (what exactly is with your name btw?) as I wasn't sure about Missouri after solely reading their website, but after visiting the campus I really, really hope I get in. Not only the prospect of resident tuition after one year, but the facitilies, the clinicals, and the people really amazed me. Not to mention the rec center pool including waterfall, lazy river, and jacuzzi. Paradise??

If anyone has any further questions about Mizzou feel free to PM me as I am lazy right now (still in the airport) and don't feel like doing the feedback quite yet.

Aha, theree you are.. My name is DickVet because I was studying abroad in Edinburgh at the time that I decided to become a vet/join SDN. At the time, I was (still am) obsessed with Edinburgh's vet school, Dick Vet, short for Royal Dick School of Vet. Medicine.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear your interview went well, now begins the waiting. Hopefully everyone gets their transcripts on time. And OMG, that rec center seemed freakin awesome. I know they said we get into the gym for free as students, do you know whether that includes all of that other stuff? If so, i'm totally sold on this school haha.

mmm knew there had to be some reason behind it, figured you didn't want to become a vet who is also a dick.

Anyway, all the other stuff BETTER be free to students, and I'm pretty sure it is..I think the whole rec center complexy thing is open to all students, or they probably wouldn't have mentioned all that good stuff. But yeah, I'm with you..any school that has PALM TREES (even if they're fake) is where I wanna be!

Actually, if this were true I'd just say no thanks to all these stupid interviews and go to Ross. Which I still could. Tempting....

Did no one else go to the main library? I'm tempted to try and transfer as an UG right now...2 days before the beginning of my last semester... just to get closer to that library! 😀 I'm green with envy (there should be a proper smiley for that!).

I heard the rec center is great but a pool is a pool, no matter how many waterfalls or fake palm trees.

That said...it is somewhat disappointing that all of you liked it as much as I did--a slower moving OOS waiting list, maybe? 😉

Yeah but they also have a lazy river plus water slides and stuff! Comon, that stuff was awesome when we were 8 years old, and still is in my books. Besides, we won't have to worry about the wait list when we all get in on the first try 🙄

I am glad you guys liked Mizzou as much as I did!! I didn't get to see the library or rec center on my tour, but I have heard great things about both places! Did Kathy Seay say the first or second week of Feb. we should be hearing back? That's what she said on my interview day but that was back on 1/8 so I didn't know of things have changed. Now the waiting continuesssss...

She said yesterday that we'll hear the week of Feb. 1 -- so sounds like she's narrowed down the time frame to just the first week -- a.k.a. about 2 weeks from now!!! Let's hope everyone gets in their transcripts early!!! :xf:

AHH!!! Thats so soon! I think last year people got acceptance letters around Feb. 5th. I am really crossing my fingers for this school! How did everyone else who interviewed this weekend do/think of the school?

And OMG, that rec center seemed freakin awesome. I know they said we get into the gym for free as students, do you know whether that includes all of that other stuff? If so, i'm totally sold on this school haha.

Actually, and this is very sneaky of Mizzou, your "free" ticket to use the rec center facilities isn't free at all. It's included in your tuition, so you ARE paying for it, but most students don't realize that. As such, you can use whatever they have available, and I suggest that you do, since you are paying for it after all lol. Still, it's an amazing place and is definitely worth the sneaky add-in on our tuition, and you might have heard me talking about it if you were there this past Saturday at lunch time or the Saturday before after lunchtime lol.

Good luck on the hardest part of this wait, everyone! We really enjoyed spending time with you all, and we've got our fingers crossed for you. :xf:

hmm thanks for the info..I kind of assumed that they would add that into tuition as most schools do when they say the facilities are "free". But we have to pay this huge tuition anyways, so in essence it's still free to me 😛

Until I have to start paying back those pesky loans of course...

Did anyone call to make sure Mizzou received their fall transcripts? I have a slight fear that they never got mine, and that i'm going to be that ONE guy who delayed the release of the admissions decisions.

I sent Kathy Seay an email and she wrote back confirming that my file was complete. It's prob. not a bad idea to double check!🙂

DickVet..please don't be THAT guy. 😉

hah no worries, I emailed Kathy and she responded saying my file was complete. Now I won't feel guilty about hunting down whoever that guy/girl is. :ninja:

Anybody else feel like time is going slower than ever??? I just want to know!! ugh ~ 2 weeks.... 2 weeks...

Is Mizzou anyone's first choice?

It's my first choice for OOS... and it will be a tough decision if I get into mizzou and my in-state

However, I feel like a lot of people are liking mizzou which makes me wonder if the waitlist will even move as much as the past 🙁

I think that right now, Mizzou might be my first choice. I really liked Penn on my visit, but after I got in, I started to face the reality of the price tag. I think Mizzou has my favorite curriculum overall, even though I like the city atmosphere of Penn a little more than Columbia.

Since Mizzou is about half the price of Penn, I think it tops the list for now. Still have an interview coming up for my instate VAtech though, so I can't say for sure. For now, I would be thrilllleed if I got into Mizzou.

im with you on the price tag over OSU.. so i think Mizzou might be my favorite because of that and i also LOVE the fact you get 2 years of rotations

OnceBitten...or anyone else 'in the know' at Mizzou:

What's the deal with in state interviews? On the website it says they interview all in state kids that meet the reqs and I *think* that's what Kathy told me when I spoke to her many, many months ago but can't be 100% certain. My equine vet said they don't however after speaking to one of the vets at Mizzou. Can someone clear that up for me? Just kind of curious as to the process. It does kind of seem like a waste of everyone's time to interview people that have no hope of getting in just because of residency. :Crosses fingers and prays I'm not in the category: :scared:

Also, any clue as to a timeline for interview dates/invites after the Feb 1st deadline? I'm not going to bother Kathy over any of this (she is SO sweet and helpful!) but it would be nice to know.
