I was just wondering if anyone got the scholarship opportunites packet in their acceptance envelope. The checklist says to indicate the scholarships you wish to be considered for and return the form, but I didn't get any information on scholarships. Did anyone? Maybe it'll come after they recieve your deposit?

And my apologies for asking the dumbest question ever, but anyone else a little nervous that if more people accept than they have spots for, that they'll make it first-come first-serve??

I know they technically can't and they've been doing this for years and always get to the waitlist anyway, but while I'm waiting for my state school, I'm nervous everyone else will be sending in their deposits.

Am I crazy?? What would happen IF they had more people accept than they have spots for?
 
I've been told that they only send out 44 acceptances initially if they only have 44 spots (I think this specific number is accurate for Mizzou).

Then, they accept more applicants gradually as declines come in one-by-one. So, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

But, if you're still paranoid, you can try calling Kathy. I'm sure she'd be willing to help a probable future student 😉
 
I am OOS and was accepted to Mizzou so I have a few questions for current Mizzou students (if there's any of you checking this thread). I will also be looking into this stuff myself, but was hoping for some answers from current students.

How much does living cost? I'd be looking for a two bedroom, pet-friendly apartment within 10-15 mins of campus. I'm curious if it is comparable to what I pay here. Also, how easy is it REALLY to get IS tuition? During our interviews they basically made it sound like a sure thing if you just follow the correct steps, but one of my friends got into a different school last year and they made it sound really easy, but she's finding out its nearly impossible. Are there a lot of opportunities at the vet school for part-time jobs?

Thanks for any help. I fell in love with Mizzou when I visited and, if I get into my IS school (interview coming up soon), I'm going to have a really hard time deciding between the two. Any other things you can tell me about the school/area would be helpful. Feel free to PM me also! Thanks! :hello:

I live in a 2 bedroom that allows pets and it's $450 a person with everything included (utilities, gas, cable/internet) so it's nice. Other 2 bedroom places that allow pets I've seen have been in the $350-400 a person range but they don't include anything. The campus is right in the middle of the city so just about anywhere you live is going to be no more than 10-15 minutes away.

I came to Mizzou for undergrad from Nebraska and getting residency was easy. All you need to show them is that you've lived in the state for a year (as simple as showing them a copy of your lease), make $2,000 in that year that you lived here, and obtain a Missouri driver's license and register to vote here...it's that easy. There's just a few forms and stuff to fill out as well. Nothing too strenuous. Once you've been here that full year you set up an "interview" with the residency office. I showed her all my stuff, she glanced over it briefly and said congratulations you're officially a Missouri resident.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.
 
Thanks Mizzoulander! I too have a couple questions. I was wondering if there are any parts of Columbia that are 'unsafe' to live. I've been looking at apartments and most of them are in big apartment complexes. Are those generally a good option? Do most vet students live in a certain area of town? Let me know if you have any specific recommendations for apartments as I am looking into moving in June.

Btw, Sorry to ask, but has anyone not gotten their letter yet that interviewed? I live in Florida, so could just be slow 🙁. Seems like most people have gotten notification though.

I haven't! I live in a very rural area in South Texas..it always takes mail 69546546 years to get to me.
 
I was wondering about your letter zeebra, but I didn't want to ask! 😳

Hopefully tomorrow!! I don't know how you guys are surviving waiting this long!
 
I live in florida too, and from what i've experienced, usually mail from any school, even the university i go to, which isn't all that far away, takes at least a week to get to where i live (which is somewhere between a field of sheep and a field of llamas) so i wouldn't worry too much yet. Everything will turn out to be awesome.

Although to be honest, i'm really worried now that i know there were only 44 invites :scared:
 
If it makes you feel any better, I'm basically 100% sure I'll be declining my acceptance. I just want to wait until I hear from my one remaining (and first choice) school before I "pull the plug." I don't want to be rude and delay the process for others, but I really want to hear back from my first choice school first. Hope people understand 😳

For sure! 🙂 I just hope they notify people immediately. I'll probably call them after I get my letter, to get all the details.
 
The only real "not as safe" place to live is on the northwest part of town but there isn't very much student housing there to begin with anyways and it's kind of far away from campus too. Some of the bigger apartment complexes are ok. Hardly any of them allow pets and most of them, in my opinion, take advantage of the "first time renter" crowd. There are quite a few nice 1 and 2 bedroom places right next to campus that unfortunately don't allow pets. If you want a couple links to some of the places I'd recommend just let me know.

To add to Mizzoulander's response, it really is easy to become a MO resident. Everyone that tried in our class had no problems whatsoever.

As far as living, it's pretty affordable (according to most people moving from OOS). I live in a 3 bed, 3 bath, 2 story duplex with a single car garage and it's around $800/month, but there are certainly cheaper places out there. I'd recommend checking out duplexes or houses rather than apartments as they can be pretty loud. I lived in Grindstone Canyon my first year and it was pretty loud and way overpriced, but it was the only place that let me have my dog so I made it work for a year. When you're checking with landlords and such, be sure to mention that you're a veterinary student. We have a good reputation with a lot of them, and sometimes they'll even allow pets when they typically wouldn't.

As far as part-time jobs, there are several available. There are 2 position in the Clinical Pathology lab as a technician on weeknights and weekends. There is also small animal ICU and I'm sure there are others (lab techs, etc.)

Hey guys! Mizzou is still leading the pack in my list and I'm also thinking about housing. My parents are really, really interested in buying a place out there for me to live in and then reselling it in four or five years. We scoped out a few duplexes and condos about ten minutes from campus and they are ideal for having a roommate or two (as in, everyone has their own room and bathroom and pets are totally allowed). Rent would then go to my mom and dad. Will keep you posted so any interested takers can get in contact with me, but it'd be great to share a place with another vet student!

Congratulations, everybody! This is such a happy thread. 🙂

My housing recommendation: I moved up here from Florida without ever seeing my current duplex, and I really lucked out with my chosen landlord and the company he works with, Sentinel Properties. He was very willing to take pictures of everything for me, let me sign the lease and fax it back to him, and, the best part, he has pet friendly apartments/duplexes that have no restriction on breed, weight, or presence of claws. Basically, you can own whatever the city of Columbia will allow you to own, which is fantastic. I live in a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom duplex by myself (it's bliss) and, without having pets it would cost me $550/mo, but with pets it costs $575/mo, and you don't have to pay a pet deposit. The neighborhoods available are pretty safe, as in I'm a single female living by myself and I'm not afraid to leave my house at night or walk around the neighborhood by myself, and they're not in bad shape. There are units like mine (3b/2b), as well as 2 bed/2 bath and 2 bed/1 bath units, but whatever is available depends on who moves out. The only issue that might arise from living here is that it's about a 20 minute drive from campus, way out on the west end of the city (not the northwest lol). If you have dogs you want to let out at lunch every day, I would look into places closer to the school, but otherwise it's wonderful. Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, and the mall are about 3 minutes from my neighborhood, so everything you need is pretty close by, if not the campus itself lol.

To those of you looking closer to campus for a place to live, I would really suggest staying as far away from campus as you can to avoid the undergraduate party scene. It gets very noisy and disruptive, and the annoyingness of it increases as you get closer to the campus. Be aware of apartments that put out ads for rooms that sound great and have everything, but then the rent says "$200/mo per person," as those tend to be geared towards undergraduates and are probably not places in which you want to live. I've also heard to specifically avoid places located on Nifong, as it is college central, but I can't say anything about that from my own, west end of the city, quiet living experience lol.
 
Thank you for all the info everyone!!!! Its so helpful to get suggestions from current students, so please keep it coming! I really want to go to MO, but if I get into my IS school I'm going to have to consider the monetary difference. Hearing that getting IS tuition is pretty easy really helps out and it looks like apartments will be around the same as what I pay currently. Wow, that sounds like a really nice living situation! I guess since i'm a trad. student though, I don't really know anything other than the noisy undergrad living style. Since I really hate commutes, i would probably look for something a bit closer.

Are there are alot of apartments around the main street area? (I think i remember it being called Broadway). I really like the more "bustling" parts of town, and see myself living somewhere like that..

There are no actual apartments ON Broadway, from what I've seen, but there are a TON in the surrounding areas, and especially on South College Avenue, which is directly connected to East Broadway and is superclose to campus. If you're really looking for undergraduate-type apartments, you won't have any trouble finding what you want here lol.

haha thanks, though maybe in the end it would be better for me to keep my distance from the undergrads. Fewer temptations to party on a Wed. night 😉
 
For all other in state MO people that might be lurking: I got my interview invite today via snail mail.

It came with my academic evaluation and raw score out of 40 possible points as well as a letter of what to expect. Did you out of state kids get an academic score sent to you with your invite?

I don't recall receiving any sort of acadmic score. I think I remember one of the current students saying that things were much more clear cut for in state applicants than OOS. ie, if you were above a certain 'academic score,' you would get the interview invite.

Someone totally should. I'm not doing it since i'm not 100% sure i'm heading to Mizzou. But maaybbee if someone makes the group, and I have a really strong urge to join, then i'll know Mizzou is right for me???:scared:

I think they interview all in state kids as long as you have a 3.0 or greater. Could be wrong but that's what I remember hearing.

Anyway, I was just curious because I think I would have preferred NOT knowing if I was going to interview (I'm withdrawing my app due to new opportunities)...I would probably frantically be figuring out what my max score would be if I got a 100% on the non academic section which would do nothing but psych me out! :laugh: It would be interesting to know if any people on here that applied in state (or out of state) know what their total score was that earned admission. I'm sure it changes greatly every year but that could be interesting.
 
I'll keep you in the loop, guys! I'll be heading to visit Wisconsin in March, but unless it really, really wows me, I think Mizzou is going to be it! Isn't this freaking exciting?!? 😀
 
So, can I ask for some input on the required rabies immunization? Apparently it's really expensive (I was quoted $339 per dose), and my insurance doesn't cover it.
 
I got my rabies shots in the fifth grade (after being bit by a woodchuck). I'll have to get a titer drawn and I have no clue if my insurance will cover that or the booster shot if my titer is low.

I'm pretty sure you can call your insurance company and argue with them that is is better to get the preventative shot than to actually get bit by a rabid animal and have to get the series (like I had to). With a good argument, most insurance companies will give in and cover it. Also, let them know it is required by the vet school, maybe that will strengthen you arguement.

Mizzou will actually pay half of the cost of the entire series, so each shot is closer to $125 or something similar. It is a big chunk of change to lose, though. I think mine totaled a little over $300 in the end that I hadn't budgeted for because we weren't told it was mandatory. Ouch.

p.s. marci, you got bitten by a woodchuck?? did you forever hate the rhyme "how much wood could a woodchuck chuck..."? I've only been bitten (?) by a goose, and I was 4, and I HATED them for a looong time after that
 
Still nothing but junk mail today. It's good to know that they'll call because I seriously feel like something happened to the letter :scared:.
 
As far as places to live go, I live in a two bedroom apartment that is $510 per month for the whole place including water and sewage. The manager is great and loves to have vet students (pretty much any place around here if you tell them you are a vet student they are happy to have you 🙂). Smaller pets are also welcome here.
