I'm having the hardest time remembering the ortho/para activators and meta deactivators. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a good way to memorize them?!! I've checked on the other mneumonic thread, and there is no indication of such. If any one has any tips of how to memorize these, it would be helpful as well. thank you

don't have a mnemonic but you should get a chart or memorize it.

Electron withdrawing groups are meta directing and deactivate the ring

Electron donating groups are ortho/para directing and activate the ring

Halogens are the exception to the rule and are deactivating and ortho/para directing.

Do you have problems remembering exactly what is an EWG/EDG?

On another post I saw, someone likened it to the following:

The more you give (electrons), the more options you'll have (Ortho & Para)

The more you take, the less options you'll have (only Meta)

Halogens, being electronegative will always 'take' due to their electronegativity, but they are the exception in that they promote Ortho/Para

In terms of activating/deactivating. Just remember that the resonance stability of the benzene ring can be "upset" by donating electrons, making the otherwise very stable ring more active due to the donating groups upsetting that fine resonance balance a bit.
