Pts that leave without being seen drive my directors crazy. "That's money wlaking out the door!" they scream. But when I'm up to my neck in the other silly crap that walks in I'm glad that the following "pts" LWBS:
-45 yoM with cirrhosis whose PMD set him up for an outpt RUQ US but he thought it would be better to get it through the ED.
-67 yoM with constipation. Wife asked triage RN "Do you think he could take a laxative?" RN (who is now my favorite person for the night) "Yes, you could go to the 24 hr pharmacy and get some right now."
-? yo M with sore throat who asked if being seen would take more than 30 min. When told yes (by my favorite triage nurse) turned and left.
-? yo M here for prescription, not sure what med. Refused to be seen by me but just wanted "his prescription filled."
-33 yo F wanted to know if we do PET scans.

That's money I OK with not getting.

That kind of crap I'm happy not seeing, but our group has consistently noted that LWBS are more likely to be insured patients than the patient population as a whole. They get up and leave because they have a choice (and a car).

And we do have a CAT scan, but we don't scan dogs. You'll have to find a veterinarian for that.

.

Gee I wonder what he was looking for and why he didn't want to be seen by you. We used to have a frequent narc abuser who would peer through the ambulance bay doors to see who was on before deciding to go to triage

I don't think the guy didn't want to see me in particular. He just thought that the ER triage desk was actually the "Psychic Instant Pharmacy" where they can predict what med you need and have it waiting for you without you needing to provide those silly incidentals like your name and a prescription.

Pts that LWBS tonight:
-Dad with 15mo baby asked triage nurse "My baby hasn't pooped today. Can I wait until tomorrow to take him to his PMD?" Triage nurse - "Yes."
-25 yo M c/o being dizzy. Triage Rn - "How much have you had to drink?" Pt "Why do all y'all think my drinking has anything to do with this. (very nasty exclaimation)!" Pt walks.
-45 yo M "My doctor sent me in for my chest pain." Triage RN "You're having chest pain?" "No, I did last week. That's when my doctor told me to come but I been to busy 'til now." Pt split while Triage RN was getting the EKG machine.
